This alone explains the success of all reality shows—and tabloid headlines (that’s probably why you clicked on this article, right?)—people want to watch other people fail miserably, destroy their lives and get tangled in controversy because it makes them feel better to know that someone out there is more messed up than they are.

With that in mind, you can’t help but wonder how long it will be before VH1 or some other group of bottom-feeders wrangle all of today’s hottest, most screwed up singing stars into a camera filled house/reality show under the guise of rehab.

Since all of these stars are often referred to by the media as “trainwrecks,” perhaps the show could take place on a train. We’ll call it Train Wrecks. Or maybe Crazy Train—but only if we can get Ozzy Osbourne to be the host and perform his 1980 hit “Crazy Train” mp3 as the theme song.

Amy Winehouse, Britney Spears, heck, maybe even Lindsay Lohan (she did have a hit album afterall), could all pile into a train and spend time talking about their problems, resisting the temptations of the club car’s open bar. Along the way, the train could stop in various towns where the girls could do good deeds or lecture kids on the dangers of drugs or something equally heartwarming.

Winehouse made a name for herself with soulful retro-pop songs such as “Rehab,” mp3 but has quickly deteriorated into a skeleton-esque shell of her former self, having recently been hospitalized after collapsing from what her father told the media was emphysema induced by smoking crack and cigarettes. Classy.

Spears has a list of woes too long to tackle, but highlights include shaving her head, being hospitalized for an extended time and shaving her head. Not to mention a “comeback” appearance on a horrible sitcom.

Lohan’s been in and out of rehab, posing nude for mags, failing miserably in movie theaters and taunting paparazzi with the notion of a lesbian relationship with DJ Samantha Ronson (whose brother is Mark Ronson, the ultra-hip producer behind Winehouse’s Grammy-winning album, Back to Black free mp3 downloads).

Hmm…I was kidding at first, but actually, this show just might work. Throw in the currently anorexic looking Courtney Love as the den mother/train conductor offering guidance to the girls, and this show is sure to be a hit.

Now, if a network actually comes out with Crazy Train I want a cut of it!

Some of the biggest bands of the era have stuck around and hit it big. Some of them have just stuck around. Here’s a look at some bands that were big in the ‘90s but that you might not realize are still making music—regardless of whether anyone wants them to or not!

Smashing Pumpkins

With albums like Siamese Dream and the epic Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness , this Chicago outfit was at the top of the alt-rock pile. Then, drugs and singer Billy Corgan’s ego destroyed the group resulting in some lame-o side projects. The group reunited (if singer + drummer+ hired hands=reunion), in 2006 for a new album, Zeitgeist, not that anyone should care.

Stone Temple Pilots
Ok, so technically this band has been broken up for several years while frontman Weiland was off making tabloid headlines, court appearances and records with Velvet Revolver. However, the boys reunited in 2008 for a summer reunion gig. Initially written off as mere Pearl Jam/Alice in Chains wannabes thanks to songs like “Sex Type Thing” (video here), the band managed to build a solid career for itself, despite the critical onslaught.

Mudhoney
They didn’t explode in the mainstream the same way Pearl Jam and Nirvana did, but Seattle’s Mudhoney were prominent figures in the grunge scene just the same. Songs such as “Touch Me I’m Sick” are underground classics, making this band one of those groups that many musicians cite as an influence, for good reason. The band’s latest effort, The Lucky Ones, was released in last month. The band is seemingly always on tour, see dates here.

Pearl Jam

Now, for some people this one seems pretty obvious, but considering the band’s decade-long invisibility to radio and MTV, we’re guessing that lots of folks outside of the circle of diehards who collect the live albums the band releases with a nearly Grateful Dead-like frequency, may have believed the band rode off into the Seattle sunset. However the band is alive and well, the boys are even playing Bonnaroo this weekend.

Hole
Regardless of whether Kurt Cobain did or didn’t write the songs for Hole’s breakthrough album, Live Through This, the fact remains that the band had a following before that album, and after it, too. From dirty riot grrl roots to Billy Corgan-assisted popstars, Hole was probably the biggest female group of the era (our apologies to guitarist Erik Erlandson). Whether the band will regroup remains to be seen. Courtney Love’s most recent effort was a solo project, America’s Sweetheart. Hopefully, the next Hole album will suck less.

Nada Surf
This trio was part of the less-grungy segment of the alt-rock nation. The NYC nerd-rock group was largely (and rightfully) written off as a one-hit-wonder after scoring a buzz-worthy MTV video with 1996’s deadpan ode to teenage self-absorption, indie-rock whininess and sour grapes, “Popular.” (watch video here) The spoken word track finds the group offering dating tips for the pre-O.C. set such as “wash your hair.” Ironically, the guys had that greasy, bedhead look going on. At any rate, this band continues to release records, for some reason.

Beginning in the ‘50s and spanning a 50-year-career, this singer/guitarist introduced the world to his rhythmic beat and powerful vocals on classic tracks like “Who Do You Love,” “I’m a Man” and, of course, “Hey Bo Diddley.” His influence on rock is immeasurable, having inspired everyone from Buddy Holly to the Rolling Stones.

However, in the wake of Diddley’s passing, it’s tempting to wonder if any other guitarist has had the same influence? Also, is there a contemporary artist inspiring people to pick up the guitar the way he did?

I don’t think so.

In fact, it seems that more and more kids are passing up real guitars in favor of their videogame counterparts in games such as Rock Band and Guitar Hero.

Is Guitar Hero ruining real music?

It’s probably too soon to tell. And while it is possible that playing this virtual guitar will inspire some gamers to pick up real instruments, it’s also possible that the result is merely going to be a new generation of uninspired cover bands dishing out lame renditions of songs they learned from the video game.

The game company has recently announced plans for editions of the game focused on specific bands such as Aerosmith and Metallica. Wonder if they’ll ever do a country version of the game?

The line-up for this year’s Bonnaroo Festival has just been announced.

For the uninitiated, Bonaroo is a four-day music and arts festival held on a 700-acre farm in Manchester, Tennessee. Similar to Woodstock, Coachella and the late lamented Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo attracts a wide array of very high-profile acts, as well as cool up-and-coming artists playing everything from folk music, jam-band fare and indie-rock to blues, heavy metal and rap.

This year’s line-up is set to include big names such as Pearl Jam, Metallica, Kanye West and B.B. King, as well as hipster acts Vampire Weekend, MGMT and Cat Power.

Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant will be performing with Alison Kraus on Sunday.
On Thursday, the all-female Led Zeppelin tribute act, Lez Zeppelin will perform. Wonder if they’re nervous? Will Plant make a guest appearance? Could be interesting…

The concert and events run from June 12-15, the pricey tickets cost from $209.50 to $244.50 (plus service charges). Camping is optional and some additional fees apply.

By the time you spend money on food and travel, this whole thing is really expensive, so I’m not really sure who attends this event. It seems too expensive for kids. College students, maybe? Well, college students with their parents’ credit cards,haha.

The song is part of the band’s upcoming self-titled album, nicknamed the “red album,” set to be released June 3.

The thing that’s so frustrating about the video is that it is very carefully catered to the YouTube generation, featuring guest appearances from a slew of YouTube “celebrities” who’ve spawned viral video hits of their own.

“Evolution of Dance” video guy? Yeah.

Mentos fountain? Sure.

Star Wars parody? You bet.

Chris “Leave Britney Alone” Crocker? Unfortunately, yes.

“Chocolate Rain” singer? Yup.

The only thing missing is some sort of rip-off of an Ok Go video.

However, the difference between those videos and this one is that those videos became popular by accident because they were so random and weird and oddly captivating. Weezer’s video on the other hand seems to be a desperate round of coattail riding.

The meeting with the video producer probably sounded something like this:

So, we need to make a music video. Hey what do kids like these days?
I dunno, YouTube?
Cool, let’s take all the popular videos from YouTube, and put them in our music video, that way everyone will already like it.
Genius!

Of course, with a band of smarty-pants dorks like Weezer, they’ll probably explain that the video isn’t lame—it’s supposed to be lame. It’s like postmodernism and irony or some junk.

Whatever. Is it clever or stupid? It’s too soon to tell. But it is catchy.

Hating aside, the new song is an improvement over the pop-emo schlock the band served up with 2005’s Make Believe (admit it, “Beverly Hills” is an awful song—especially coming from a group capable of writing much more clever and catchy tunes such as “Buddy Holly” and “Hash Pipe.”).

His point was that the two finalists, David Archuleta and David Cook, were both worthy of winning the competition. But the truth is, they’re both kinda boring.

At any rate, David Cook (photo) defeated the puppy-eyed David Archuleta—and, in what was probably most surprising event of the night—it was Cook, not Archuleta, who broke down in tears after the announcement.

So who is David Cook?

The 25-year-old singer had been working as a bartender in Tulsa, OK prior to auditioning for American Idol (at the insistence of his brother). Cook also performed with bands such as Axium and the Midwest Kings. He released a solo album, Analog Heart, in 2006 and was named best local artist award in his hometown paper.

It’s nice to see someone win this show who has actually worked in the music business as a struggling musician, unlike most of the singers who have never been in a club or on a real stage before (high school musicals do not count).

Guess we’ll have to wait and see what his debut album has in store. Hopefully it’s better than that awful ballad, “Time of My Life,” he sang after winning the show on Wednesday.

The young, boring singer had a hit with the beyond horrible pop ballad, “Tattoo,”mp3  but something about her has failed to connect with audiences the way Idol superstars Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson have.

With so many Idol “winners” fading quickly into obscurity, does it really matter whether David Cook or David Archuleta win? Or will they be forgotten just as quickly as Season Five winner? (It was gray-haired Soul Patrol singer Taylor Hicks, in case you forgot.)

This year’s big contest is set to be decided as the two Davids face-off on this week’s episode of American Idol. Unfortunately, they’re both pretty lame in their own, not-so-special way.

Archuleta is the sweet young kid from Utah whose apparently overbearing stage dad has been controlling the 17-year-old’s career. His voice is nice, but boring. Does the world really need another easy listening star like Josh Groban? No.

Cook is being portrayed as the show’s rock’n’roll star. Yawn. A goofy haircut isn’t enough to make someone a rockstar, well, unless you’re Pink. This guy is as bland as Archuleta, but he has the sense to pick up a guitar occasionally and at least try to make the little girls think he’s a rebel. Aerosmith cover songs? Ick.

Ashlee Simpson, 23, and Pete Wentz, 28, tied the knot Saturday in California. The pop-punk pair chose a wedding theme based around the classic tale of Alice in Wonderland.

Ashlee’s dress is still being kept under wraps, but according to People

magazine it was designed by Monique Lhuillier and she wore a diamond necklace and earring by Neil Lane. Her engagement ring is a massive diamond, which Fall Out Boy bassist Wentz claims is a non-conflict diamond.

Odds are it was the reception that was fairy tale themed, not the actual wedding. That’s kind of shame, it would’ve been pretty entertaining to think of Simpson walking down the aisle dressed as the white rabbit or chesire cat. Oh well. Maybe next time.

The duo’s wedding cake did follow the theme, featuring top hat, tea pot and pocket watch imagery from the story.

Also, wasn’t Alice’s adventure in Wonderland really sort of a nightmare? It doesn’t really seem like the type of image you’d want to have for a wedding.

Of course, the faux-goth theme for the wedding probably isn’t the creepiest part of the big day. In addition to Simpson’s oddly man-ish sister Jessica serving as maid of honor, the ceremony was performed by Simpson’s father, the always creepy Joe Simpson. Wonder if he’s selling the wedding photos yet? He already tried to sell photos of Ashlee’s unconfirmed baby.

No word on where the possibly pregnant newlyweds will head for the honeymoon. We’d guess down a rabbit hole somewhere. Better not tell Joe, he’ll be there with the paparazzi.

However, things are getting ugly again for this Disney princess.

In the wake of her Vanity Fair Miley Cyrus nude photos controversy, the 15-year-old is being pummeled with negative attention once again. This time, she’s being accused of theft.

Page Six reports that rock band Lustra is alleging that Miley’s song “Rockstar” sounds way too close to their tune “Scotty Doesn’t Know.”

Yeah, we’ve never heard of it either. Apparently it was on the soundtrack to Eurotrip.

Frankly, both songs are pretty bad. And, for what it’s worth, Cyrus probably didn’t “write” this song anyway. There’s a crew of songwriters employed by Mickey Mouse to do that for her. She’s too busy, um, posing for photos and showing off her bra.

This raises the obvious question—What the heck is the Def Jam diet?

Apparently, it’s similar to a diet known as “master cleanse.” Developed by Stanley Burroughs in 1941, master cleanse is a strict dietary routine meant to cleanse the body of harmful toxins. However, Burroughs was convicted of when one of his followers died after following the strict plan. The conviction was later overturned, but it is still a scary thought.

The program involves cleansing for a period of about ten days by drinking a concoction made of lemon juice, cayenne pepper and maple syrup.

Yuck.

We don’t recommend this or any other diet. We like cookies and we have no desire to drink maple syrup—no matter what popstar does it. Syrup on pancakes is delicious though. Mmm…pancakes.

On a related note, one of the best (and oldest) bodies in music is hitting the road again—the legendary Tina Turner has announced plans to come out of retirement for a tour this fall. We’re glad Turner is back, 68 never looked—or sounded—so good!

26-year-old Jenna Bush wed 30-year-old Henry Hager in a ceremony in her hometown of Crawford, TX. The bride danced with her presidential pop to the tune of Joe Cocker “You Are So Beautiful,” which is sweet.

Seriously, could we ship this guy off to some remote Antarctic region where he will be cut-off from over-eager paparazzi and internet access for his own nonsensical blogging?

In recent months, the adult contemporary singer/guitarist (read: more boring than Matchbox 20) has become a media darling thanks to a string of romances with the likes of Jessica Simpson, Minka Kelly and, now, apparently, Jennifer Aniston.

That’s fine and dandy, but we prefer to know as little as possible about the author of “Your Body is a Wonderland” (aka one of the most annoying songs ever written. EVER).

Making matters worse, Mayer has taken up residence in the blog world, using his personal page as a forum to discuss such important topics as why ex-girlfriend Jessica Simpson isn’t as dumb as everyone thinks she is (um, yeah right), and, most recently, his valiant attempt to fulfill his lifelong ambition of having perfectly feathered ‘80s hair a la Michael J. Fox circa Back to the Future. He even encouraged readers to submit poetry about his new retro hair-do.

We thought his music was bad, but it turns out this guy’s blander-than-bland personality may be even worse than his sickeningly sweet ballads (check out the “Daughters” video, if you dare).

Honestly, if the most noteworthy thing about your career is that you just got a silly haircut, maybe you’re doing something wrong? Regardless, this guy is all over TV and magazines, so somebody must be interested in him, we guess…But we’re tired of hearing about him!

So, in addition to making the guitar seem utterly lame, Mayer poised to ignite a trend almost as horrible Rob Thomas albums and faux hawks.

Incidentally, his latest gal pal, Jennifer Aniston, the former Mrs. Brad Pitt, was once renowned for her trendy hair-style, the Friends-era “Rachel” hair-do. She might be able to offer grooming advice, now let’s hope hooks up with someone to offer him musical guidance as well.

Given that a large number of listeners have panned the inexplicable album of Tom Waits covers, maybe Reynolds popped the question just to make his girl feel better? Or to take some of the attention off of her horrible record and redirect it to her shiny new diamond ring?

Perhaps this engagement is merely a consolation prize for having released such a horrible album?

Then again, Johannson’s beau may not be the best judge of music—afterall, he was formerly engaged to Alanis Morissette, AKA, the most annoying female singer ever to sell a zillion albums. (Remember her Dave Coullier-bashing hit, “You Oughta Know” mp3? Ick.)

The bad news is, it is Monday again—but don’t let it get you down—today is also Cinco de Mayo!

What does that mean?

It means that you have a reason to organize a fabulous fiesta to celebrate this Monday with great music, food and fun.

What’s all the fuss about? Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican holiday dating back to 1862. The day is a celebration of General Ignacio Zaragoza’s victory over French forces in the Battle of Puebla.

Of course, you don’t have to live in Mexico to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. Many people throughout the world celebrate the Irish holiday St. Patrick’s Day, even if they’re not Irish. The same is true of Cinco de Mayo. Think of it as a day to celebrate your heritage, or to learn about a new culture—and have fun at the same time.

Since this is the internet, we can’t really make you dinner (sorry, ha ha), but we can point you in the direction of some awesome easy Mexican recipes, here. Mariah Carey has been spotted sporting a rather hefty diamond ring, which AOL confirms is an engagement ring from boyfriend Nick Cannon.
Carey, 39, and Cannon, 27, have been dating recently, though neither has officially commented on the hot wedding rumor.

Carey, who is riding high on the record-breaking success of her latest album, E=MC2, is also unveiling a new film project, Tennessee. Her return to acting is a questionable move, given that her infamously terrible role in the semi-autobiographical flick Glitter nearly ruined her career.

An actor, MTV personality and rapper, Cannon rose to fame as star of Nickelodeon’s All That and the Nick Cannon Show, and went on to appear in films such as Drumline and Men in Black II. He has been previously linked with singer Christina Milian and Kim Kardashian, and was recently briefly engaged to a Victoria’s Secret model.

AOL and the New York Times report that a video has surfaced allegedly showing guitar legend Jimi Hendrix, um, starring, alongside not one, but two ladies. The tape is set to be released by super-skanky adult film company, Vivid Video.

Seriously? Enough already. Last week it was a fake Marilyn Monroe sex tape, tomorrow it’ll probably be a phony Miley Cyrus sex tape scandal. When will this nonsense end?

First of all, Jimi Hendrix is a lot of things, but a “sex symbol” isn’t really one of them by most accounts. The company that introduced the world to squeaky clean Mousketeers-turned-skanky pop disasters Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears can add Miley Cyrus to its list of good girls gone bad.

Miley Cyrus, the 15-year-old star of the absurdly popular Hannah Montana franchise, became a star by playing the role of an innocent young school girl leading a secret double live as a music star. But her real life isn’t so G-rated.

While Hannah Montana’s kid-friendly image and music (Hannah Montana Mp3 music downloads here) is a hit with kids, Cyrus’s recent string of racy photos (including ones where she reveals her green bra and pulls up her shirt for a guy) is causing an uproar among parents. Some sources claim it’s not Cyrus, but a look-alike. Uh-huh.

It’s perfectly understandable that parents of tiny Montana fans are concerned that their kids will try to imitate the rebellious star, the more important question is: Why aren’t Cyrus’s own parents concerned about her behavior? Maybe the publicity (and cash) she generates makes them reluctant to discipline her.

Of course, Cyrus is a teenager, and in this age of MySpace and Facebook, it’s not unusual for young girls to post inappropriate photos of themselves online. In fact, it may not be that Cyrus is setting a bad example for her peers—it may be that she’s following the bad example that has been set by “friends” on these social networking websites.

Posting racy photos online is serious, but somewhat excusable as a teenage mistake.

However, what isn’t excusable is when Cyrus’s parents pimped her out for a naughty photo shoot with a magazine.

Cyrus is currently apologizing for the photo shoot she did for Vanity Fair magazine with renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz. Cyrus says she’s “embarrassed” over the way the partially nude photos turned out. See the photo here and judge for yourself.

Well how did she (and her parents) think they would turn out? When you agree to pose topless wrapped in a satin sheet for a photo shoot, it’s going to result in topless photos! Cyrus isn’t sorry about the photos, she’s sorry about the backlash she’s going to have to endure.

Or maybe she isn’t.

Maybe she’s perfectly happy with the racy photos, the “bad girl” image controversy and the tons of free publicity she’s about to be given. The Hannah Montana money-making machine has proven its savvy in the past—remember the controversy over the 3-D concert movie that was in theaters for “one weekend only” that sold out and caused such demand that it stayed in theaters for an extended run?

Disney has been churning out garbage entertainment for several decades, but the company has always been excellent at salesmanship and marketing. The new Hannah Montana controversy is probably just the latest chapter—after all, a new Hannah Montana movie is set to hit theaters May of next year, and everybody loves free publicity.

Or don’t bother.

On film, Johansson’s smoky rasp is typically on the border between being seductive and asthmatic. Unfortunately, as a singing voice, it’s less smoky jazz club and more Velvet Underground featuring Nico. Of course, that’s fine if you’re one of those people who pretends to admire Nico’s gruff monotone, but you’re only fooling yourself.

If you don’t already know the details on this project, it’s basically Johansson releasing an album of musician/actor Tom Waits songs. (She did co-author one track, “Song for Jo”.)

Yeah, we’re not sure who wants to hear this either. Maybe the indie-rock dorks who are stoked about Natalie Portman hooking up with obnoxious neo-folkie Devendra Banhart? Who knows.

And, we’re not usually quick to defend crumby pop-stars, but seriously, even Ashlee Simpson co-writes some of her own songs on her new album Bittersweet World. Her contributions are likely minimal compared to those of her songwriting team, and yes, those songs suck a lot of the time, but at least it’s an illusion of effort.
An album of cover songs is a cop-out. A sure-fire way to fail, but in a noble fashion.

If you’re going to do cover songs, it’s cool to pick a solid artist like Waits, but there’s nothing remotely fun or likable about this dirge of an album—it’s respectable, but scarcely enjoyable.

Tom Waits is a well-respected artist relegated to the fringe, and albums by actors are essentially novelty items to start with (watch as William Shatner sings “Rocket Man”)—so combining an actor with the overly novel idea of a cover song album is either brilliant or ridiculously alienating.

Guess we’ll find out when the album hits the charts (or doesn’t) next month.
