The nominations for the 2010 Grammy awards were announced Wednesday night, but were there really any surprises on the list?
Yes, but not in the categories you might expect.
Some fans have protested, but everyone already knew that the Grammy selection committee was going to snub Lady Gaga in the Best New Artist category because she was already nominated for an award last year for her single “Just Dance.”
We’re not sure why anybody is surprised that this would disqualify her from the category—after all, she clearly isn’t a new artist anymore.
This year’s Best New Artist nominees do include experimental indie-rockers MGMT, electro-pop duo Ting Tings, country group Zac Brown Band, R&B singer Keri Hilson, and CW-approved indie rockers Silversun Pickups.
Technically, these aren’t really new bands either. Silversun Pickups released their debut album in 2006, but this is probably their first Grammy nod.
Inexplicably nominated for song of the year at the 2010 Grammy Awards, Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody” was actually released in 2008. The Grammy rules are a mystery to us.
Anyone who isn’t sick of seeing Taylor Swift everywhere will be happy to know that the teen sensation was nominated for eight 2010 Grammys.

Anyone wishing to see a repeat of this year’s West vs Swift melodramatic nonsense at the MTV VMAs is also in luck: Beyonce Knowles has been nominated for ten Grammys, including categories in which she’ll be pitted against Swift, so, y’know, if Swift wins, West can come defend Knowles again.
We’re not sure how or why, but West himself was nominated for six awards. West had been scheduled to tour with Lady Gaga, but was suddenly dropped from the tour before it launched.
