ABOVE: Which ’80s popstar performed the Pee Wee’s Playhouse theme song using the alias “Ellen Shaw”?

Today is an important day in pop music history, because it marks the birthday of one of the biggest stars of the ’80s. In 1989, this singer released an album called A Night to Remember, but do you remember this ’80s music star who celebrates her birthday today? Let’s find out.

Take a look at the clues, then check out the answer below!

1. In 1980, this singer debuted with a new wave band called Blue Angel.

2. When she released her solo debut album in 1983, she became the first artist to have four top-five singles released from one album.

3. In 1985 she was the musical director for the movie the Goonies.

4. In 1986 she recorded the theme song for Pee Wee’s Playhouse.

5. In 2008, she recorded a very strange “Christmas Duel” with Swedish garage-rockers, the Hives.

Answer: Born June 22, 1953, Cynthia Ann Stephanie “Cyndi” Lauper turns 56 today.

Known for hits like “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” and “Time After Time,” Cyndi Lauper helped make the ’80s a little more colorful with her wild hair and unique fashions.

In addition to selecting the songs for the Goonies soundtrack, Lauper wrote and recorded the theme song “The Goonies R Good Enough.” A year later, Lauper recorded the theme song to the popular TV show Pee Wee’s Playhouse, although she used the alias “Ellen Shaw.”

In 2005, Lauper released the Body Acoustic, an album of acoustic versions of some of her best-known songs featuring collaborations with artists such as Ani DiFranco, Sarah McLachlan and Shaggy. Her latest album, 2008’s Bring Ya to the Brink, features songs intended for dance clubs, but she took a break from the DJ scene long enough to record an unusual Christmas song with Swedish rockers the Hives.

ABOVE: One of the longest, strangest videos of the ‘80s, Cyndi Lauper’s mini-movie for her song from the Goonies soundtrack, “Goonies Are Good Enough.” An orange mullet, pro-wrestlers, pirates and a pre-rehab Corey Feldman? Very ‘80s.
