Adam Lambert AMA Song: Shock or Yawn?

VIDEO: Were American Idol fans really shocked by Adam Lambert’s racy performance over the weekend?

American Idol-created pop star Adam Lambert appeared on the American Music Awards to perform a flat version of the not-so-awesome title track from his recently released debut CD, For Your Entertainment (that’s the one with the cover photo of Glambert looking like a blue-haired disco alien).

However, Lambert may have surprised some Idol fans with his performance, one laced with sexually suggestive dance moves and same-sex kisses.

Well, Lambert tried to surprise viewers with these cheap tactics, but he may have inspired more eye rolls than gasps.

When the Idol runner-up walked around the stage holding a leash attached to crawling boy toys dress in leather, we couldn’t help think of Spinal Tap’s Smell the Glove album cover (the only difference being that Tap was deft parody; Lambert is humorless).

Morever, the Brian May-approved singer’s vocals were weak, at best, and the song itself was as pointless and as played-out asanything offered up by Britney Spears or Lady Gaga.

Was anyone actually surprised by this display? Was Lambert trying to shock a music world that just doesn’t really care anymore?

These types of songs and dances are certainly nothing new. Madonna and Britney Spears’s kiss from an MTV awards show has been seen so many times, viewers scarcely bat an eyelash; Disney queen Miley Cyrus has been seen imitating pole dance moves onstage; and inexplicably popular group Pussycat Dolls is basically just burlesque karaoke, so maybe Lambert is trying to boost record sales by creating controversy over sexuality where there just isn’t any.

In fact, Lambert is in a tough situation:

If he does shock people with his sexuality and performances, he’ll complain endlessly that it isn’t fair that America is upset by a gay singer kissing a male dancer when female performers can do the same routine without being criticized.

However, if in fact audiences are accepting of him and unmoved by his antics, Lambert won’t be able to manage to shock people any longer and odds are nobody will listen for very long.

Just like on American Idol, Lambert can’t win.

Tell us what you think: Was anybody really shocked or offended by Lambert’s “racy” pop number?

As a performer, Adam Lambert is calculated and cold. Gaga buried his set with lesser fare, and revealed him to be the shrill poseur that he is. He intentionally sets out to create controversy so he can claim to be shocked or offended at the controversy. 14 minutes and counting on this clown act…
