ABOVE: A video message from the Beastie Boys’ official website, explaining the nature of Adam Yauch’s cancer, his upcoming surgery/treatment, and plans to release a new album (Hot Sauce Committee Part 1) and embark on a tour after his treatment is complete.
Fans stopping by the Beastie Boys website to pick up info on the band’s upcoming album and tour were met with a surprise video message from the band. While the message is somber, Adam “MCA” Yauch has been diagnosed with a form of cancer, the news is delivered with optimism regarding Yauch’s prognosis, which seems very good since the cancer was diagnosed in an early stage. Although his cancer is located in a gland in his throat, Yauch says it should not impair his vocals.
Plans for the band’s upcoming album and tour are understandably on hold until Yauch’s physicians give him the green light to return to work. The Beastie Boys were scheduled to perform at several summer festivals, including All Points West, Outside Lands, and Lollapalooza 2009.
Initially formed as a punk band, the trio evolved into a top-notch hip-hop act based on the strength of its three members’ MC skills, and memorable songs such as “Hey Ladies,” “Sabotage” and “Fight for Your Right. “Earlier this year, the group’s acclaimed album, Paul’s Boutique, marked its 20th anniversary with a deluxe edition re-release.
44-year-old Yauch is also noted for his outspoken support of the movement to free Tibet.
