American Idol Sucks but the Best Cover Songs Don’t
February 28th, 2008 by KarenEvery week, the American Idol finalists butcher some classic (and not-so-classic) songs.
While cover versions of popular songs can suck, there are also some cover songs that seem to outshine the originals.
On that note, today we’re taking a look at some famous songs that sounded better (or were more popular) the second time around.
We probably missed some…so feel free to leave us a comment and let us know what other great covers are out there!
Best Cover Songs
Hard to Handle—Black Crowes
In 1990, this Atlanta band put a gritty rock’n’roll spin on this 1968 Otis Redding track and built a career on its success.
Sweet Jane—Cowboy Junkies
This Canadian outfit is celebrating the 20th anniversary of its Trinity Session album with a DVD and album redux. The mellow group is widely known for its soft, dreamy version of this Velvet Underground track.
The Man Who Sold the World—Nirvana
The band’s unplugged version of this David Bowie number quickly became a fan favorite.
Turn, Turn, Turn (To Everything There is a Season)—The Byrds
This song was actually adapted from a song by folk icon Pete Seeger. Another famous Byrds track, “Hey Mr. Tambourine Man” was actually written by Bob Dylan.
All Along the Watchtower—Jimi Hendrix
Even the song’s composer, Bob Dylan, readily admits that Hendrix’s version of this song is definitive.
I’m a Believer—The Monkees
Early on, the Monkees didn’t write their own songs. In fact, this one was written by Neil Diamond.
