Amy Winehouse On American Idol?
August 21st, 2007 by Wendy AronBritish soul music wild child Amy Winehouse is signed to Island/Universal through Simon Fuller’s 19 Management - yes, the very same Simon Fuller who created American Idol and just signed Jordin Sparks, last year’s TV talent contest winner, to her first recording contract.
This certainly raises the question - would Amy Winehouse have made it on American Idol? I have to say, an unequivocal “no!” Can you image Winehouse telling all of the young people tuning in that she was expelled from school at age 12 for “not applying herself” and piercing her own nose? How could this kid be anyone’s idol?
Now she’s 24 (right about the age of most American Idol competitors), and the Amy Winehouse saga continues. On August 14 Winehouse and new husband Blake Fielder-Civil checked into rehab after their respective fathers nearly came to blows over their heroin and cocaine addiction. The Vancouver Sun reported she stayed at the Causeway treatment centre in Essex England for five days, where the regular course of treatment is four to six weeks.
This followed an August 8 incident in which Winehouse was admitted to University College Hospital in London after slipping into a coma after overdosing on several drugs. The singer told the News of the World that she smoked heroin, snorted cocaine, took ecstasy and the psychedelic ketamine, along with whiskey and vodka during a bar crawl in London.
Can you imagine Winehouse competing in the televised popularity contest where being squeaky clean is the key to success? Despite her talent, she would have been tossed off in the early going.
Winehouse’s mother told US weekly that Amy’s unruly behavior was the result of having too much too soon. Will the same thing happen to America’s sunny favorite, Jordin Sparks? I doubt it. Then again Kelly Clarkson was a wide-eyed innocent when she won American Idol and she’s turned in to a hard-edged rocker.
