It sounds like a play on the old gag about finding some poor sucker to buy swamp land in Florida or a famous bridge in New York, but this time around it’s no joke: Abbey Road is for sale, well, Abbey Road Studios, at least.

AP reports that the famous London recording studio is being put up for sale by EMI as the massive record label is facing financial difficulty in an era of music industry turmoil. Currently home to the likes of Coldplay, the struggling label has already lost big-name acts such as the Rolling Stones.

Best known for its association with the Beatles, over the years the famous recording studio has hosted a wide array of artists including Pink Floyd (Dark Side of the Moon), Radiohead (The Bends), Syd Barrett (the Madcap Laughs), Pretty Things (SF Sorrow), and Beatles junkies Oasis (Dig Out Your Soul).

Details of the sale are still sketchy, but it seems likely that even if Abbey Road sells for a steep price, EMI will continue to face financial problems.

The good news is that Michael Jackson isn’t around to steal this bit of the Beatles legacy from Paul McCartney; the bad news is that with the massive amount of money she won in their divorce, Macca’s ex-wife Heather Mills probably could.
