An annual celebration of country music turned fatal in Camrose, Alberta, Canada over the weekend, as one person was killed and dozens were injured when a stage collapsed at the Big Valley Jamboree.
Last month, two people were killed, and many others injured, during a stage collapse at a Madonna concert site in France.
A press release from the Canadian event’s official website states that the stage collapsed Saturday night as the result of extreme weather that consisted of high winds and heavy rain. One person, Donna Teresa Moore, is confirmed deceased and two people remain in critical condition. As many as 75 people with various injuries were treated at medical facilities and have been in contact with family members. Emergency personnel worked throughout the night to confirm that all guests are accounted for.
Nashville singer Billy Currington was reportedly on stage at the time of the collapse, according to a report on his website, Currington was taken to the hospital and suffered a minor concussion but is expected to make a full recovery.
Currington’s bass player, Alex Stevens, was pinned under the wreckage of the stage for half an hour while rescue personnel removed debris to free him. Stevens underwent immediate surgery to repair a severed artery and nerves in his left arm.
Actor Kevin Costner had been scheduled to perform later in the night with his band Modern West. Glen Campbell, Kentucky Headhunters and Josh Turner were among the dozens of popular country stars taking part in the three-day event.
Details of this story are still developing.
