If anyone else out there is bored stiff by all of the overly-sweet and spineless indie sounds sweeping the nation’s earbuds (Passion Pit? Vampire Weekend? Bat for Lashes? Pains of Being Pure at Heart? snore), then this blast of rock’n'roll noise will be a pleasant reminder that the sleepy cardigan rockers of the world haven’t won, yet.

If you don’t have merrily ringing ears and slightly scuffed dancing shoes after San Francisco noisemaker Ty Segall’s new disc, Lemons, finishes spinning, you must’ve done something wrong. Turn it up and try again.

Making the deal a little sweeter, Segall’s new disc is Continue reading »

Review: (500) Days of Summer Soundtrack mp3s and videos

Published July 23rd, 2009 by Karen

ABOVE: When the trailer kicks off with a Smiths-related pick-up line, you know you’re in for a quirky indie flick. Love it? Hate it?

(500) Days of Summer is shaping up to be this year’s quirky film hit along the lines of Juno and Garden State. Like those films, music plays a big part in the movie-including the fact that star/indie-rock heartbreaker Zooey Deschanel is a real-life musician (her band, She & Him, performs a Smiths song on the soundtrack).

What else is on this hot movie soundtrack? Find out what’s good-and what we never, ever want to hear again.

We’re handing out the soundtrack tunes and videos below, so sit back and enjoy.

What do you think?

Does a good soundtrack make you want to see a movie more?
Would a bad soundtrack make you want to skip a movie?

Music fans–particularly fans of British and Irish music–might be excited to learn that the nominations for the 2009 Mercury Prize for best British or Irish album of the year have been announced, including Bat for Lashes, Florence & the Machine, Friendly Fires and nine others.

Although there are couple of jazz and  rap acts in the mix, this year’s nominations are heavy on indie bands and low-key electronic acts, which seems to have been the big trend over the past year. Florence & the Machine and Kasabian have been chosen as favorites by oddsmakers, but we’ve got a different pick.

If you’re not familiar with the chosen artists, don’t worry: We’ve compiled a collection of music and videos from the twelve nominated bands and musicians to help you through the list.

Checkout the 2009 Mercury Prize nominees below, then tell us who you would pick as the winner.

REVIEW: New Daughtry CD ‘Leave This Town’ –Is Chris Still Idol’s Top Rocker?

Following up on the success of his post-American Idol debut album, Chris Daughtry and his eponymous band are back for a second shot at the spotlight–and they’re bringing that annoying guy from Nickelback with them.

For whatever it’s worth, Chris Daughtry is actually a better singer than Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger.

Considering the fact that Daughtry’s vocals could often be mistaken for Nickelback karaoke, pairing him with Kroeger is redundant, but it also means that the song they co-wrote, “No Surprise,” (listen below) is an easy fit with Continue reading »

Best, Worst and Weirdest Album Covers Ever: 61st Anniversary of the LP

Published June 18th, 2009 by Karen

ABOVE: Usually associated with the cuddly Muppets, the original Piero Umiliani version of this song comes from an Italian movie about wild sexual behavior in Sweden. Muppets gone wild? We hope not.

In honor of the 61st anniversary of the 33 1/3 rpm album, we’re taking a look at some noteworthy, or just amusing, album covers though the years.

Muppet Rawk put together an art exhibit featuring classic album covers, redesigned to feature the Muppets. Kermit as Chuck D.? Yes, please.

Check out some of the worst album cover artwork ever, or find a new favorite in the massive LPCover Lover archive with album art divided into dozens of categories including food, happy hour, monsters, puppets,  guns and guitars.

And, not for the faint of heart, NoiseAddicts  rounded up 30 controversial album covers from the Black Crowes to Chumbawumba. Not necessarily safe for work, y’know, depending on where you work, and you might want to wait until after lunch. Seriously. We warned you…

So, what’s your favorite album cover of all time?

Worst Songs Ever: Paolo Nutini “Candy,” Sickly Sweet Scottish Rock

Published June 17th, 2009 by Karen

ABOVE: Worse lyrics than Black Eyed Peas? Yeah, maybe. Paolo Nutini’s sickly sweet “Candy.”

Remember when rock songs used to be about girls and drugs and partying and dragons and fast cars and politics and rebellion and stuff? Well, those days are gone.

“Give me some candy after my hug,” sings Paolo Nutini, on his new hit single, “Candy,” his weirdly nasal, never-gonna-be-Dylan voice emphasizing the awkward lameness of each word as it struggles out of his throat. We’re not sure how he managed to sing this stuff without laughing, but the song is apparently a hit (particularly in Europe, so maybe we can forgive any non-English-speaking listeners. Maybe).

In 2006, Nutini managed to sell a million copies of his debut album thanks to a MySpace push and the bubbly TV-jingle catchiness of his single, “New Shoes.” It was bad, but in an inoffensive, easy to ignore Jason Mraz/Jack Johnson kind of way. Needless to say, Nutini has gotten worse.

Now, with his 2009 album, Sunny Side Up, the Scottish singer-songwriter has concocted one of the worst songs in recent memory–the Black Eye Peas’ horrendous,  spelling-challenged, brain-dead dance anthems notwithstanding.

Obviously, we needed to make you listen to this monstrosity, so you can share our pain. (It’s kind of like when you think the milk has gone bad, but you ask someone else to taste it just to be sure).

What’s the worst song you’ve heard recently?

Free mp3: Jarvis Cocker’s Latest is More Elvis, Less Blur

Free MP3: Jarvis Cocker—“Angela

As the leader of Pulp, Jarvis Cocker rose to the top of the Brit-pop heap after battling Blur and Oasis through the ’90s British invasion redux. In recent years, Pulp has been put on the shelf and the lanky singer with the acid tongue has ventured out on his own.

On the lead track from his latest album Further Complications,  Cocker’s eponymous ode to Angela (”She’s nearly 23/ making $4.15 an hour”) has less in common with Pulp’s ’90s Brit-pop showdown and more to do with the fuzzy pub-rock of a hungry young Elvis Costello. It’s not as cringe-inducingly clever as the Pulp classic “Common People,” but what is? Continue reading »

Singles: Green Day “21 Guns” Borrowed from David Bowie?

After the jump: The classic song we think Green Day swiped the melody from.

With rumors of the genre’s demise long fueled by accusations of selling out and growing up, “punk’s not dead” has been a rallying cry since punk’s earliest days.

While we don’t want to examine and debate the vital signs of this no longer vital genre, we are curious as to what the word punk means in an era when people spend more time playing Guitar Hero than garage rock.

Does punk exist anymore? Is it just a brand name, like Pepsi or Starbucks? Does it even matter anymore? Probably not…

Met with widespread acclaim, and localized disgust, Green Day’s new album 21st Century Breakdown, featuring the single “21 Guns,” is Continue reading »

American Idol Still Finding Identity on ‘Fight for Love’

Fight for Love

Elliott Yamin

2009

MusicVixen Rating:

A new American Idol is about to be crowned, but the fact that so many runners-up continue to have careers may mean that you don’t have to win the contest to reap the benefits-after all, Clay Aiken came in second to Ruben Studdard, and we all see whose career has fared better.

Elliott Yamin came in third during the fifth season of American Idol, and while winner Taylor Hicks (”Soul Patrol!“) hasn’t exactly risen to superstardom, Yamin has continued to work to carve out a niche for himself in the industry.

Yamin’s sophomore album, Fight for Love, features lead single, “Fight for Love,” a laidback neo-soul number that has received a respectable amount of airplay in recent weeks. Even with the horrible, trendy, Kanye-esque vocal processing, it’s clear that Yamin has a better voice than most of his contemporaries, making the effects unfortunate and unnecessary.
