It was a long night on American Idol, as the season finale built to its climactic conclusion: the crowning of 2008’s American Idol.

David Cook defeated David Archuleta for the title, the announcement triggering a flood of tears from the winner.

25-year-old Cook took on the role of the resident “rock star” during his time on the show, thanks to a slightly silly asymmetrical haircut, guitar playing, scruffy facial hair and a voice that called to mind past Idol contestant, Chris Daughtry.

Although the winning announcement wasn’t made until the show’s final seconds, the program stretched on for two hours. Filled with performances from this season’s other top contestants, as well as songs from former winners Carrie Underwood and Jordin Sparks, the show was something of a concert event. Non-Idol acts such as OneRepublic, Seal and ZZ Top also made appearances throughout the night, dueting with contestants.

The competition had been so evenly matched between the two Davids all season, that Idol judge Simon Cowell likely summed up everyone’s sentiment when he said, “For the first time ever, I don’t really care who wins,” because both contestants were worthy of the title.

David Cook isn't very exciting, but he has to be better than Jordin Sparks"”boring!
