Depeche Mode lead singer David Gahan was rushed to the hospital just moments before he was to go onstage in Athens, Greece, yesterday, leaving thousands of fans in the lurch, according to an Associated Press report.

Tuesday night’s concert north of the Greek capital was canceled after Gahan, who turned 47 last month, fell ill and was hospitalized overnight. Neither organizers nor the hospital would say what he was suffering from.

About 20,000-30,000 fans that had turned up to hear the British band were told to retain their tickets in case the singer was well enough to reschedule the concert for tonight. A spokesperson for the concert organizers, said the concert might also be rescheduled for another day or definitively canceled. Future European dates were also called into question.

Depeche Mode first surfaced in the 80s, and since then has released 46 singles and a dozen albums.

Wow, 30,000 people still buy tickets to Depeche Mode shows? Hopefully the singer is ok, otherwise there will be a lot of disappointed fans (and bank accounts).

Hah, I think I’m one of those people. Most people I know haven’t even heard of them :) and they’re definitely before my time. I bought tickets for their show at MSG. I don’t like their new single but I want to see Depeche Mode live at least once in my life.

I remember thir songs, they were a little wird but it was something new (I think). I was born in 1988 but I heard one of their songs on VH1 I think. It was a while ago. I think it might of been a drug overdose. You never know with artist these days.
