While it has become common to hear recordings of Johnny Cash singing songs by Nine Inch Nails, Soundgarden and Neil Diamond, are hip-hop songs next?
Well, sort of.
Joaquin Phoenix rose to superstardom thanks to his starring role in the 2005 Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line, and while the oddball actor declared his retirement from acting in the fall, it seems that he may be pursuing a new career—in hip-hop. (Yup, there’s a video. Keep reading.)
The fact that Phoenix has had a camera crew trailing him since his “retirement” might be a tip-off that this whole thing is an elaborate hoax, but nonetheless, reports confirm that the 34-year-old performer turned up in Las Vegas over the weekend sporting a Rick Rubin-esque beard and shades and stepped up to the mic to offer his best rhymes.
Phoenix is currently the subject of documentary helmed by brother-in-law Casey Affleck, charting the “retired” actor’s new music career. Reuters reports that Phoenix plans to release a hip-hop album under the guidance of producer Sean Combs (AKA Puff Daddy, Puffy, P-Diddy, Diddy, the annoying guy from the acne infomercial, etc).
While the good news is that we’ll never actually have to hear the real Johnny Cash embarrass himself over a lukewarm hip-hop backbeat, it’s a little bit disappointing to see Phoenix making a joke of his own musical potential (and his acting career)—and, based on the videos springing up on YouTube, this is some sort of joke, whether Phoenix knows it or not.
Watch the video here and judge Phoenix’s MC skills for yourself.
