Tonight, New York music fans have zillions of choices of bands and events to attend, but two of the biggest bills in town are probably Green Day (Madison Square Garden) and Katy Perry (Hammerstein Ballroom).
The two shows actually have more in common than you might expect.
One is group of middle-aged punks cashing in on teen angst while they can (with the new album, 21st Century Breakdown), the other is pop starlet clinging to the spotlight while fading into Lady Gaga’s even more ridiculous shadow.
Both are touring behind albums full of glossy pop-rock songs that sound like they could’ve been written by any roomful of record label-employed songwriters.
And both wear enough make-up to make the sales clerks at the M-A-C counter giggle with delight.
We’re not sure whether Perry is heading to Broadway anytime soon, but Green Day is: So, maybe she can score a role in the American Idiot musical, if this whole pop star thing doesn’t work out.
Perry recently made headlines when she threatened legal action against an Australian fashion designer named Katie Perry for trademark infringement. Singer Perry’s real name is Kathryn Hudson. The fashion designer, Katie Jane Perry.
