Mexican pop diva Paulina Rubio and Puerto Rican reggaeton duo Wisin and Yandel took home the early honors at the eighth annual Los Premios MTV awards, held this week in Los Angeles, according to an Associated Press report.
“I wasn’t expecting this,” Rubio was quoted as saying, as she clutched her best soloist award, a “lengua,” as the vivid pink tongue trophies are called. “I want to thank my fans who have been voting day and night for ‘Causa y efecto.’ I’m the cause - you are the effect.”
Wisin and Yandel won best video for “Abusadora,” at the celebration of the best of the year’s pop, rock and reggaeton from Latin America at Universal City’s Gibson Amphitheater. Other winners included the rock band Panda, pop trio Reik, and the alt-psychedelic band Zoe.
Host Nelly Furtado kicked the show off on Thursday with “Manos al Aire,” a tune from her Spanish-language album “Mi Plan.”
