Madonna and Guy Ritchie’s marriage came to a quiet end yesterday, as the couple were granted a preliminary divorce decree in a London courtroom, according to an Associated Press report.
Neither appeared at the brief court session, in which “Ciccone M L v Ritchie G S” was one of 17 cases given a preliminary decree. The divorce can become final after six weeks and a day.
Documents released by the court revealed that Madonna petitioned for divorce on the grounds of Ritchie’s “unreasonable behavior,” but did not elaborate. The judge said he did not need to apply family law to the case because the couple had already agreed on a settlement. According to British tabloids, Madonna is going to keep most of her $445 million fortune and participate in joint custody of the couples’ two children, Rocco, 8, and David Banda, 3, who was adopted from Malawi in 2006.
Requests for comment by the celebrity couple’s representatives went unreturned.
