MTV Music Video Awards Brings Down the House

September 10th, 2007 by Wendy Aron

The MTV Music Video Awards was back and better than ever over the weekend.

After suffering poor reviews and a decline in ratings over the last few years, MTV moved the show to Las Vegas’ Palms Casino, shortened it from three hours to two, and changed the program’s setup to focus more on performances than awards.

After a dismal opening with Britney Spears, the telecast rebounded with some excellent live performances, including the debut of Alicia Keys’ new song “No One” and an inspired, choir-backed cover of George Michael’s “Freedom.” Justin Timberlake, Timbaland, Kanye West, Fall Out Boy and the Foo Fighters each hosted separate suite parties, where they also performed live.

Timberlake was the night’s big winner, with four trophies, including the award for Male Artist of the Year. Rihanna won the coveted Video of the Year for her metallically inspired “Umbrella,” as well as Monster Single of the Year for the hit tune. Beyonce and Shakira won Most Earth- shattering Collaboration for “Beautiful Liar.”

The evening was not without its controversy. During the telecast Timberlake urged MTV to play music videos and chided them for their reality television programming. Tommy Lee and K id Rock got into a fight during Alicia Keys’ performance and after the awards were handed out, Kayne West griped about being blanked. Of course, what would a music telecast be without some ruffled feathers? These stars are used to getting their way and are prone to tantrums when they don’t get exactly what they want. But we love them in spite, or maybe because of all that.
