Music geeks everywhere were delighted today as Matador Records sent out a message via Twitter, “confirming the worst kept secret of all time; the return of Pavement.”

A decade after calling it quits, the ’90s indie rockers will be back in their lo-fi, slightly greyer glory, starting with a concert date Sept. 21, 2010 at Rumsey Playfield in Central Park.

UPDATE: After the initial date sold out instantly, Matador Records announced that Pavement would add a second show Sept. 22, 2010, also at Rumsey Playfield. Oh, and 3rd. And now a 4th show, same venue.

Yeah, you read that right: The show is a year away.

However, tickets for the show go on sale tomorrow. (complete ticket info, below)

But, don’t call it a comeback, Matador notes that fans should, “be advised this tour is not a prelude to additional jaunts and/or a permanent reunion.”

We’re not sure why, but we want to blame these average Joe indie geeks for the current onslaught of boring preppies like Vampire Weekend. But maybe that’s not fair.

The influential act played its last show at London’s Brixton Academy in 1999. Since then, members have played with groups such as Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks and the Silver Jews.

The Reunited lineup is set to include Mark Ibold, Scott “Spiral Stairs” Kannberg, Stephen Malkmus, Bob Nastanovich and Steve West.
