We’re not entirely sure who is to blame for the trend of ridiculous celebrity baby names, but it really needs to stop.
M.I.A., the British/Sri Lankan rapper who recently grabbed the spotlight with her ready-to-give-birth-at-any-moment performance of “Swagga Like Us” with Jay Z and Lil Wayne at the 2009 Grammys gave birth a few days after that performance. However the baby’s name has been kept secret.
It looks like it will remain secret, as M.I.A. just posted a blog refuting claims that she and her beau Benjamin Bronfman had reportedly named their new son, Ickett.
Thank goodness this rumor turned out not to be true (we were more than a little suspicious when sites like Yahoo! started peddling the story based on rumors printed in gossip-filled Latina magazine).
Just because the hip-hop star didn’t use the quirky name doesn’t mean that nobody else will. The name seems horrible at first glance, but then it reminds us of Wicked Wilson Pickett and Ike Turner’s Ikettes, so maybe it’s not all bad.
We’re not sure why anyone thought M.I.A. would pick this oddball name for her baby. (Is “Ickett” even a real name?)
Then again, we’re not sure why “Paper Planes” singer M.I.A. performed at the Grammys dressed in some sort of mesh, polka-dot maternity bikini (photo). She’s mysterious like that.
On the plus side, at least this kid’s parents are cool enough to compensate for any silly name they might come up with. Unlike, say, Bronx Mowgli Wentz, the poor spawn of Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz. Giving your kid BMW initials is not cool, it’s trashy.
