Bruce Springsteen has long been an outspoken supporter of the Democratic party and President Obama, however he may be testing the limits of fan support with his latest political stance.

In a statement posted to his official website, the 60-year-old music star urges “those who support equal treatment for our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters to let their voices be heard now.”

Springsteen’s message further declares his support for a controversial bill pushing to legalize gay marriage in his home state of New Jersey.

The proposal has faced stern opposition, particularly among Republicans, but Springsteen is voicing his support for Governor Corzine in putting this contentious bill before the state senate this week.

A BRIEF STATEMENT FROM BRUCE
Like many of you who live in New Jersey, I’ve been following the progress of the marriage-equality legislation currently being considered in Trenton. I’ve long believed in and have always spoken out for the rights of same sex couples and fully agree with Governor Corzine when he writes that, “The marriage-equality issue should be recognized for what it truly is — a civil rights issue that must be approved to assure that every citizen is treated equally under the law.” I couldn’t agree more with that statement and urge those who support equal treatment for our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters to let their voices be heard now. If I were Bruce Springsteen’s mother, I would be so proud of him! He has courage, common sense, and empathy. I too beleive in equality. (I’m not your mother Bruce, but I am so proud of you.)
