The Best, Worst and Weirdest Celebrity Music-Makers

October 29th, 2007 by Karen

Jackie Chan’s martial arts moves have made him a movie star for over 30 years - but can he sing?

Well, China seems to think so! Chan was selected to record the song “We Are Ready”¯ as the theme for the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics.

With Chan jumping from the silver screen to the radio, this is a good time to listen to some other actors who have tried their luck with music.

Find out which celebrity albums are hits and which ones are misses with my picks for the best, worst and weirdest albums from Hollywood.

Best Hollywood Music

1. Justin Timberlake

Before he was wearing stylish suits and bringing “SexyBack,”¯ this Memphis singer was wearing mouse-ears on Disney’s New Mickey Mouse Club TV show.

2. Jamie Foxx

He made the leap from comedian to Ray Charles impersonator to r&b star. “Golddigger,”¯ his collaboration with rap superstar Kanye West rocked the charts.

3. Jenny Lewis (Rilo Kiley)

You may not remember singer Jenny Lewis’s 80s flick “Troop Beverly Hills,”¯ but her band Rilo Kiley is one of the top indie rock bands around thanks to songs like “Portions for Foxes.”¯

4. The Monkees

Technically, the Monkees were a fake band invented for a silly TV show in the 60s - but they made some great music anyway. They might not be better than the Beatles, but they’re a lot more fun. Today, many bands list them as a major influence. Listen to “I’m a Believer”¯ and you know you’ll sing along!

Worst Hollywood Music

1. Anything 80s!

Eddie Murphy recorded the unintentionally funny song “Party All the Time.”¯

Don Johnson did a cheesy love song with Barbra Streisand called “Till I Love You.”¯

Patrick Swayze stopped “Dirty Dancing”¯ long enough to sing “She’s Like the Wind.”¯

2. Paris Hilton

This super-rich jailbird is famous for a lot of things, but Paris will never be famous for being a good singer. Check out her weird reggae-flavored dance song, “Stars Are Blind.”¯

3. Gwyneth Paltrow

Before she married Coldplay leader Chris Martin, Gwyneth was singing celebrity karaoke with Huey Lewis. Check out “Crusin’”¯ for proof.

4. Keanu Reeves (Dogstar)

Not even the magic of “The Matrix”¯ could save this surfer-dude’s awful rock band, Dogstar.

5. Kevin Bacon (the Bacon Brothers)

No list is complete without Kevin Bacon - you can’t escape the guy! He formed a rock band with his brother, and while songs aren’t completely awful, they sure aren’t going to inspire any “Footloose”¯ dancing.

Weirdest Hollywood Music

1. William Shatner

Released over 40 years ago, Shatner’s album The Transformed Man is still the strangest disc of celebrity-rock ever. Psychedelic poetry and Beatles tunes all delivered by Star Trek’s own Captain Kirk. At age 73, Shatner released a comeback album featuring music stars such as country singer Brad Paisley, indie rocker Ben Folds and British star Jarvis Cocker.

2. Jared Leto (30 Seconds to Mars)

Jared Leto was the dreamy rebel Clair Danes had a teenage crush on in TV’s “My So-Called Life.”¯ Now fans fill clubs to see Leto wear eyeliner and a moon-suit while he plays space-themed rock songs like “R-Evolve”¯ with his band, 30 Seconds to Mars.

3. Jada Pinkett Smith (Wicked Wisdom)

Her husband, Will Smith, is more successful, but Jada’s music is more adventurous. She sings/screams for the heavy metal band Wicked Wisdom - and she even toured with OzzFest!
