Too Old to Rock? Morrissey Collapses, Clapton Cancels

British musicians Eric Clapton and Morrissey may not seem to have much in common, other than the Queen, but the two stars both turned up on the too-old-to-rock list this week after cancelling concerts.

While neither cancellation is attributable to causes as over-the-top as 61-year-old Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler’s recent head/neck injuries caused by dancing off the edge of a stage during a concert, both performers have taken ill this week.

64-year-old guitarist Clapton has cancelled a high profile show at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 25^th anniversary concerts this week in New York due to gall stones.

The famed guitarist’s website reports that Clapton is set to undergo minor surgery for the condition later this week. Jeff Beck will perform in his place during the NYC show this week.

Elsewhere over the weekend, gloomy crooner Morrissey may have collapsed under the weight of his own little black cloud.

The 50-year-old ex-Smiths leader collapsed onstage during a concert Saturday and was advised by doctors to cancel upcoming shows, including Monday’s gig at the 02 Academy. (Refunds or rescheduled shows will be announced shortly.)

Details are minimal, but reports posted to Morrissey’s website on Sunday assured fans the singer’s condition was deemed stable by physicians.

Morrissey’s latest solo effort, “Swords,” was released in the UK yesterday.

So much for the wild lives of rock stars. At least when Oasis bailed on a recent gig, it was due to an (allegedly) alcohol-fueled breakup.
