Here are 10 cool things you could do this weekend in the NYC area. Rock’n'roll, garage-rock, soul, Australian pop and indie-rock -we’ve got it all!

We’re starting things off with a free music festival today at NYU.

Top 10 NYC Shows This Weekend May 1-3, 2009

1.   Who: Golden Triangle, White Rabbits, Motel Motel, Teengirl Fantasy and More
      When: Friday 5/01/09 (NYU Strawberry Festival)
      Where: NYU Strawberry Festival:Washington Sq. Park
      Details: Golden Triangle and some other cool up-and-comers hit the stage for an all-day music fest. Now for our three favorite words: Free, All Ages. Starts at noon. Not sure if it’s indoors or not, so you might wanna bring an umbrella just to be safe.

2.   Who: King Khan & The Shrines, Mark Sultan (of King Khan and BBQ Show), Georgiana   Starlington
       When: Friday 5/01/09
       Where: Music Hall of Williamsburg
       Details: An MV favorite, Berlin-based superstar (almost) King Khan is back in NYC, this time with his 10-piece rock/soul/chaos band, the Shrines. Khan’s usual musical partner BBQ (AKA Mark Sultan) opens the show along with an interesting new outfit, Georgiana Starlington(review).

3. Who: The Dears, Great Northern, Eulogies
        When: Friday 5/01/09
        Where: The Bell House (presented by cool concert website, Oh My Rockness)

4.   Who: Jolie Holland
        When: Saturday 5/2/09
        Where: The Stone
        Details: A staple of the Anti-Records label, Jolie Holland is often overshadowed by her more popular labelmate Neko Case. That should change any day now.

5.    Who: Lovetones
        When: Saturday 5/2/09
        Where: The Cameo
        Details: Super-sweet indie-pop from Australia.

6.    Who: Bat For Lashes, Lewis & Clarke
        When: Saturday 5/2/09
        Where: Music Hall of Williamsburg
        Details:  Thom Yorke-approved Bat for Lashes has been earning massive praie for her lastest album, Two Suns. Check her out tonight when she performs on Letterman, then see  her in person on Saturday.

7.   Who: The Kills, The Horrors, Magic Wands
        When: Saturday 5/2/09
        Where: Webster Hall

8.    Who: Feist, The National, Dave Sitek, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, Dirty Projectors, My Brightest Diamond, Bon Iver
        When: Sunday 3/3/09
        Where: Radio City Music Hall
        Details: Big names unite on stage to perform songs from the album, Dark Was the Night.

9.    Who: Manikin, The Jadewalkers, The Back C.C.’s
        When: Sunday 3/3/09
        Where: Don Pedro
        Details: Cool up-and-coming rockers at an underrated venue.

10.  Who: King Khan and the Shrines, Mark Sultan (of King Khan and BBQ), Georgiana Starlington
        When: Sunday 3/3/09
        Where: Santo’s Party House, NYC
