Today’s premise is simple enough: in honor of today’s unique date–09/09/09–we’re posting the top 9 bands and songs with 9s in them.

Did we forget your favorite 9?

  1. 1
    Nine Inch Nails
ABOVE: Just a bunch of guys with silly haircuts, hanging out, singing songs in the Tate murder house. Thanks, ’90s.Iconic industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails plays its final farewell show 9/10/09. Wouldn’t have been cooler if they’d broken up 09/09/09? Oh well.
  2. 2
    “Revolution 9″ by the Beatles
A track from the band’s 1968 album, the Beatles. The band has just remastered and re-released several classic albums (a few of which are on sale for $9.99 today).
  3. 3
    Stroke 9-”Little Black Backpack”
Forgot all about this horrible song based on a horrible fashion trend from the ’90s? Lucky you.
  4. 4
    Lisa Loeb and Nine Stores-”Stay”
More ’90s nostalgia, this time from a girl who has made a career out of wearing cat-eye glasses and cooking with Dweezil Zappa. Oh, and she sings, too, apparently.
  5. 5
    Nine Pound Hammer
Been a long time since you’ve heard the words “cow punk,” huh? With album titles like Sex, Drugs & Bill Monroe and Hayseed Timebomb, the band’s intentions are pretty clear. Mostly known for a handful of underground records in the ’90s, the band was more recently featured on the Aqua Teen Hunger Force movie soundtrack. (We started to post a video, but, really, it’s better if we don’t…)
  6. 6
    “9 Crimes”–Damien Rice (from the album, 9)
The album is called 9, although it has 11 songs. Go figure. On the plus side, “9 Crimes” features Lisa Hannigan, who should’ve won the 2009 Mercury prize, but lost to this newcomer instead.
  7. 7
9, an album by Public Image Limited (1989)
ABOVE: Ok, so this creepy video isn’t from the album 9, but it is 99% guaranteed to get stuck in your head, like it or not (probably, not). After he was punky Sex Pistols rabble-rouser Johnny Rotten, John Lydon switched gears for a run with PiL. Lydon has recently announced the band will reform in honor of the 30th anniversary of the group’s sophomore album, Metal Box. Feel old yet?
  8. 8
Between the 1 and the 9, an album by Patti Rothberg
There was a time when this Patti Rothberg video was on MTV constantly. It almost makes us happy that MTV doesn’t show videos anymore.
  9. 9
    Plan 9
Plan 9 Ok, so, we’re running out of nines… (and we really don’t want to talk about Aerosmith’s horrible Nine Lives album). So, this one is a surf band from Germany which pretty much confirms our suspicion: Germans don’t know much about surf music.
