If you need a reason to peel yourself off of the sofa, we’ve put together a list of some shows worth checking out in the city this weekend (and a couple that might be good for a laugh).

Whether you’re looking for quiet acoustic tunes, punky girl rockers or noisy garage-rock boys, we’ve got you covered.

BELOW: Our weekend concert picks (w/music and videos):

  1. 1
One Man, Three Shows: All Rock

Who: Ty Segall, The Mantles, The Holy Experiment, Dome Theater
    When: Fri 9/18
    Where: Death By Audio
    Cost: Cheap. $6?
More: Frequent visitors to this page might remember that Ty Segall’s disc, Lemons, has been one of our favorites of the year so far, and for good reason! This West Coast noisemaker writes noisy rock tunes that sound like the Nuggets boxset being reenacted by a group Neanderthals with an Oblivians fixation. Yeah, it’s pretty awesome.
PLUS: If you can’t make it to see Segall on Friday, you can catch him Sunday (9/20) @ Mercury Lounge, or Monday (9/21) @ Maxwell’s.

  2. 2
    You Know Her Name
Jolie Holland live at the Kingsarms
Creative Commons License photo credit: wonderferret

    Who: Jolie Holland
    When: Fri 9/18
    Where: (le) poisson rouge
    Cost: $15
More: After more than a decade kicking around the neo-country/folk scene, Jolie Holland has become one of those names that is familiar even if the music is not. Holland is currently signed to Anti- Records (home to Tom Waits and Neko Case, among others), and the label is offering up a free taste of her music, here.

  3. 3
    (Vaguely) Familiar Indie Rock Faces
The Devil's Been Busy In Your Backyard
Creative Commons License photo credit: Grahambones

Who: Golden City (ex-Christie Front Drive), forgetters (ex-Jawbreaker), Solar Powered Sun Destroyer, Thought & Memory
    When: Fri 9/18
    Where: Lit
    Cost: $6
More: ex-Jawbreaker leader Blake Schwarzenbach unveils his new project, forgetters.

  4. 4
Rock, for People Who Don’t Like to Rock

    Who: Stryper (yes, that Stryper)
    When: Fri 9/18
Where: The Fillmore New York at Irving Plaza
    Cost: $25
More: Preaching the gospel through cheesy hair metal and black & yellow spandex, this ‘80s nightmare is back from the beyond to perform the 1986 album To Hell with the Devil in it’s entirety. Heaven help us.
  5. 5
…If You Know Them You Probably Remember the ‘90s
    ........ the trail

Who: …And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead, Secret Machines
    When: Fri 9/18
    Where: Webster Hall
    Cost: $20
More: Miss the Texas noise makers on Friday? Check ‘em out on Saturday at Music Hall of Williamsburg

  6. 6
    Gossip Girl Rock

Who: Digital Leather, Jemina Pearl, Beluga
    When: Sat 9/19
    Where: Pianos
    Cost: $10
More: Jemina Pearl cut her teeth with Be Your Own Pet and now she’s trying her hand at a solo career. Her youthful punkiness made her the perfect pick for a recent appearance on Gossip Girl that paired her with Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore for a cover of a Ramones classic. She’s fun, but really, she should leave the Ramones alone.

  7. 7
Sound Fix is back in Business
    Gratis

    Who: Damon & Naomi
    When: Sat 9/19
Where: Sound Fix Records (new location)
    Cost: FREE!
More: Williamsburg record spot Sound Fix freaked out some patrons recently with the paper sign posted in its darkened window announcing a relocation. Happily, the move is complete. The shop is open at its new location and kicking things off with a free in-store performance by Damon & Naomi (ex-Galaxie 500).

  8. 8

Who: Juliette Lewis, American Bang, The Ettes
    When: Sat 9/19
Where: The Fillmore New York at Irving Plaza
    Cost:$20
More: Since her film career seemingly stalled after she got too old to play dangerously dim teen fatales, Juliette Lewis went all Jared Leto and started a band. The thing about actors in bands, is that often it ends up feeling more like Broadway than CBGB. It’s the feeling of actors playing the role of rockstars—all style and no substance. Lewis traded in her old band the Licks for the New Romantiques.
  9. 9
    Who Listens to Rhett Miller?

Who: Rhett Miller & The Serial Lady Killers, Nicole Atkins & The Sea, Jim Ward
    When: Sat 9/19
    Where: Webster Hall
    Cost: $20
More: Rhett Miller rose to fame (sort of) as the leader of the alt-country Old 97’s, and for reasons we can’t explain people still seem to be pretty into his middle-of-the-road acoustic forgettableness (and bad band names). Nicole Atkins is best known as the girl from the band we thought was invented by American Express commercials and Jim Ward is the guy you forgot about from At the Drive-In. $20, please. Enjoy.
