Idol’s Allison Iraheta New Record Deal Announced

Published June 11th, 2009 by Wendy

ABOVE: Who is wearing more make-up? Allison Iraheta and Adam Lambert perform the ’70s rocker, “Slow Ride,” for some reason

Allison Iraheta, the 17 year-old high school student who came in fourth on American Idol this season, has scored a record deal with 19 Recordings, the company affiliated with the top-rated reality show, according to an Associated Press report.

Iraheta joins “American Idol” winner Kris Allen and runner-up Adam Lambert on the label, which is run by “Idol” creator Simon Fuller.

Fuller said that Iraheta, who hails from the Los Angeles suburb of Downey, is one of the most talented teenagers he has ever discovered on the show. The daughter of Salvadoran immigrants, Iraheta, for her part, has said she dreamed of being on American Idol since she was nine.

Before their albums are released in the fall, Allen, Lambert and Iraheta will reunite with their castmates on the annual “American Idol” tour, which kicks off July 5 in Portland, Oregon. Iraheta’s album will be released off Jive Records, which is owned by Sony. No recording plans have yet been announced for third place finisher, Danny Gokey.

The teen rocker will not rock on.

Allison Iraheta, the 17 year-old high school student from Los Angeles, was cut from American Idol the night after her less than impressive performance of Janis Joplin’s “Cry Baby,” according to an Associated Press report.

Iraheta had lashed out at judge Simon Cowell after his pointed criticisms of her performance of the Joplin classic on Tuesday night, but it was Cowell who had the last laugh last night, when Iraheta was ousted.

The finalists left in the contest are Adam Lambert, a 27-year-old theater actor from San Diego; Danny Gokey, a 29-year-old church music director from Milwaukee; and Kris Allen, a 23-year-old college student from Conway, Arkansas.

This week, the three singers will travel to their hometowns before performing two songs next week: one of their choosing, another from the show’s judges. A new Idol champ will be crowned on May 20.

Inglourious Basterds’ Quentin Tarantino on American Idol

Published April 15th, 2009 by Karen

Hey, remember when Quentin Tarantino used to make halfway decent movies?

Yeah, maybe not. It has been a while…
(We’re still not entirely sold on Death Proof, and his new flick, Inglourious Basterds, features Brad Pitt. Meh.)

Anyway, this noted pop culture junkie has clawed his way back into viewers’ lives-as a guest on American Idol. The theme of the show’s performances was, fittingly enough, songs from movies. As expected, Tarantino’s hyperactive ranting was far more amusing that the night’s performances. Maybe he should replace all four judges?

The most disappointing part of the night was that none of the Top 7 performed songs featured in From Justin to Kelly, the notoriously horrible movie musical inspired by the winner (and loser) from season one (see the trailer, above).

Or, it would’ve been awesome to see the man behind Reservoir Dogs (and some great soundtracks) take to the stage and sing “Stuck in the Middle with You” as a group number with the Idol kids, but no luck. (We were gonna post the musical scene from Reservoir Dogs, but it’s a little too violent for this time of the morning, you can see it here.)

In case you ran screaming away from the TV as soon as Adam Lambert announced that his version of “Born to be Wild” would include “some electronic elements,” we’ve got the cheat sheet for the complete American Idol Movie Night playlist. Continue reading »

American Idol Ousts Megan Corkery

Songbird Megan Corkery is flying home after American Idol fans voted her off the show last night, narrowing the Fox singing competition field to eight.

Corkery, the tattooed 23-year-old single mother from Sandy, Utah, told viewers and the judges, “I don’t care,” when she was placed in the bottom three and when it came time for the judges to decide if she could sing to save her place on the show, Simon Cowell nixed it, saying. “You don’t care. We don’t care either.”

Somewhat of a free spirit, Corkery had chosen to sing “Turn Your Lights Down Low” by Bob Marley for her performance on Tuesday night, but the judges all said it was a bad song choice for her and wondered aloud if she could remain in the competition.

The eight contestants who remain on American Idol include: Allison Iraheta, Anoop Desai, Adam Lambert, Danny Gokey, Kris Allen, Lil Rounds, Matt Giraud and Scott MacIntyre. Next week they will sing songs from the year they were born.

American Idol Top 10 Sing Motown Hits and Paula Gets a Moustache

Wednesday was Motown Night on American Idol. The 10 remaining contestants sang Motown classics to the usual panel of judges and very special guest Smokey Robinson (whoo!).

These kids should’ve been much more nervous about performing their sober karaoke in front of a legend like Robinson, but they probably didn’t really know who he was.

The judges should’ve been embarrassed, too-especially when Kara DioGuardi unleashed a truly awesome quote after eyeliner-junky Adam Lambert’s rendition of Smokey’s “Tracks of My Tears.”

Kara: “I got six words for you: One of the best performances of the night.” (Um, eight words, really.)

Thank you, Kara. You almost make Paula look normal (although Simon did draw a crayon moustache on Paula during last night’s show, so, she looked crazy anyway).

In case you missed the show, here’s a quick rundown, so you’ll know what to expect during the elimination ceremony tonight. You might want to turn the sound off on the tv and go check out some REAL Motown hits instead.

American Idol Playist: Motown Night

Michael Sarver-Ain’t Too Proud to Beg. After his stiff performance of this Temptations classic, this oil-rig worker better beg for votes (sorry).

Anoop Desai-Ooh, Baby Baby. The other day at Barnes & Noble, we randomly picked up a book in the art section that featured a ton of silly photos of Anoop making funny faces as a kid (apparently he was a child model?). The song? Um, we forgot this performance already, so it must’ve been boring.

Allison Iraheta-Papa Was a Rolling Stone. She tried to put a bluesy spin on this one, but, at 16, she’s just too young to pull off this sound.

Adam Lambert-Tracks of My Tears. The resident “rocker” was dressed and combed almost exactly like Zac Efron (Hairspray, High School Musical). People give him too much credit for his “originality” –remember how he totally plagiarized his “Ring of Fire” performance? Yeah.  But, he was probably still the best of the night-or at least the most interesting. Continue reading »

Idol Boots Pink-haired Cowgirl After Country Music Night

Following a pathetic night of contestants attempting to sing country music songs, American Idol eliminated another singer Wednesday night. (Why eliminate just one?)

Tension was high, sort of, as Alexis Grace, Michael Sarver and Allison Iraheta were announced as the bottom three contestants.

While the best part of 16-year-old Iraheta’s performance was probably her brightly colored hair, she and oil rig worker Sarver were spared this week. The pink-haired singer sent home was Grace, whose boring version of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” got the lowest number of viewer votes.

In a new twist this season, the judges have the option of vetoing the viewers’ decision to send a contestant home.

However, after Grace gave a last-ditch performance last night, the judges decided not to save  the 21-year-old single mother.

The show is now down to its Top 10 singers.

American Idol Recap: Country Music Night Worse than Michael Jackson Night?

Published March 18th, 2009 by Karen

In case you didn’t bother to Tivo last night’s episode of American Idol, we’ve got the highlights/lowlights from the show.

The theme of the night was country music, and the guest mentor was Randy Travis. (Remember him? He was popular in the ’80s…for some reason. “Forever and Ever, Amen“? No. Ok.) Why Travis was this week’s mentor is beyond us. With his nasal singing voice, Travis has one of the most limited singing ranges in country music.

However, since it was Grand Ol’ Opry night, the show was probably trying to gain a little credibility by bringing in an older, hopefully wiser, singer like Travis rather than a youngster like Taylor Swift.

We’re willing to bet that NONE of the contestants had any idea who this cowboy was.

The show featured a wide variety of country cover songs, some good, some bad, but most really, really bad. Of course, it was still better than the horror of last week’s Michael Jackson night.

The best part of 16-year-old Allison Iraheta’s performance was her hair, as always. Meanwhile, fellow rocker Adam Lambert dished out an oddly Arabian version of Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire.” The judges all went crazy over how weird and original Lambert’s interpretation was, but we can’t help thinking that it sounded  remarkably similar to the version of the song performed by Dilana on RockStar: Supernova. (Yeah, we’re busting out the Supernova on you, deal with it.) Continue reading »

American Idol Picks Wrong Singers for Top 11

In an attempt to create some buzz around the show, last week the folks at American Idol made the shocking (really?) announcement that they would have a Top 13 group of contestants rather than the usual Top 12.

Meh.

In order to get back on schedule, last night the judges eliminated two contestants instead of just one.

Following Tuesday’s ill-advised night of Michael Jackson music, fan favorites such as Adam Lambert, Allison Iraheta and Lil Rounds easily advanced to the next round of the competition.

The post-Michael Jackson night results weren’t quite as favorable for Mississippi’s Jasmine Murray and Puerto Rico’s Jorge Nunez, the pair were eliminated from the competition after receiving the lowest number of votes for their renditions of “I’ll Be There” and “Never can Say Goodbye,” respectively.

Personally, we would’ve booted Megan Joy Corkery based on her ultra-lame performance of “Rockin’ Robin.”

Eleven singers move forward. Hopefully, they never sing Michael Jackson songs again.

American Idol Michael Jackson Night? No Thanks.

Tuesday night on American Idol, the judges thought it would be a good idea to have the remaining top 13 contestants perform songs by Michael Jackson.

Why Jackson’s popularity endures is beyond us. He is creepy, his vocal range is limited at best, and his dance moves are getting pretty tired.

At any rate, Paula Abdul, Simon Cowell , Randy Jackson and the other judge (Kara Who-cares) set the kids up for an excruciating night of music by the King of Pop. We’re not sure why American Idol keeps inflicting this type of cruelty on its loyal audience.

Two contestants will be eliminated during tonight’s post-Jackson episode, although, honestly, we could name at least half a dozen singers that should go home now (if their parents still want them back, that is).

Seriously, Megan Joy Corkery performed “Rockin’ Robin.” MJ recorded that song when he was like 7 years old, seeing a grown woman sing it is just weird–kinda like those beauty pageants for toddlers. Just weird.

Also during the show, blind pianist/judge fave Scott MacIntyre performed an obscure Michael Jackson number called, “Keep the Faith.” He said he picked the song because he wanted to do something artistic, which caused Simon to bluntly point out that, “It’s fine being artistic, just not on this show.”

Good point, Simon. This is glorified karaoke, not art.

Check out Tuesday’s American Idol Playlist to find out which Michael Jackson song each of the contestants performed on the show.

"I can't wait to watch the rerun of Michael jackson night. I think it will expose all the idols to new viewers and bring in some new fans. It will also..."
