20th Anniversary of Pearl Jam Ten? We Feel So Old.

Hey, remember when Pearl Jam released that album, Ten?

Congratulations, you’re officially old.

That’s right, Pearl Jam is giving fans a great big kick in the junk this week by reminding everyone how old they are. The group is celebrating the 20th anniversary of its breakthrough album, Ten.

(They’re calling it the 20th anniversary, but it’s really only 18. They’re musicians, so we don’t expect them to be very good at math.)

That’s right, Ten was released in 1991, effectively joining forces with Nirvana and their grungy brethren to destroy heavy metal (hey, Metallica, what’s up?), reinvent modern rock music and spawn an endless stream of imitators, some tolerable (Stone Temple Pilots, we guess) and some beyond horrible (Nickelback, anyone?).

So how is the band celebrating this momentous occasion?

By cashing-in and selling four different reissues of the album, of course. (Um, greedy much?)

Set to sell for between $14-$125, here’s what you get with each of the new sets (on-sale 3/24): Continue reading »

Video: Rage Against the Machine Singer Returns, Kills AudioSlave

Published March 24th, 2009 by Karen

Almost 10 years after political rap-rock outfit Rage Against the Machine released its final album and wandered off into the sunset, former leader Zack de la Rocha has finally resurfaced with some new music.

While his new project, One Day as a Lion, will probably never be as popular as RATM guitarist Tom Morello’s band, AudioSlave, the music will probably still appeal to the same fanbase. In fact, diehard Rage fans will probably enjoy this record much more than AudioSlave’s oddly-sensitve radio-ready balladry.

And, if nothing else, de la Rocha can rest easy knowing that his album is nowhere near as awful as ex-AudioSlave singer Chris Cornell’s latest, Scream.

So, how does One Day as a Lion stacks up against Rage? Continue reading »

Smashing Pumpkins Break Up, Again: “No Bad Blood” says Fired Drummer

After being suddenly dumped from the Smashing Pumpkins, drummer Jimmy Chamberlin is speaking out in response to his split from longtime collaborator, and sole remaining Pumpkin, Billy Corgan.

Chamberlin had previously split with the band following a heroin overdose in the ’90s, but the group eventually patched up its post-rehab differences.

This split this time may be more permanent, but it also seems to be on more friendly terms.

Chamberlin took to his blog to clear the air, explaining that, among other things, “I can no longer commit all of my energy into something that I don’t fully possess.” That’s probably the nice way of saying he can no longer stand being squashed by infamous control-freak, Corgan.

Keep reading for Chamberlin’s complete post. Continue reading »

Smashing Pumpkins Down a Squash

The Smashing Pumpkins have just become the Smashing Pumpkin, according to E! Online. The latest squash to exit the band is drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, leaving only frontman Billy Corgan to lead the group into the next decade.

“Corgan will continue to write and record as Smashing Pumpkins with plans to head into the studio this spring,” a message on the band’s Web site said.

Chamberlin joined the Chicago-based band in 1988 and played on all their albums except Adore. The 44-year-old musician was previously ousted from the Pumpkins in 1996, after overdosing on heroin. He rejoined the core lineup, which also included guitarist James Iha and bassist D’arcy Wretzky, after a turn in rehab.

When Corgan reconvened the Pumpkins in 2005, Chamberlin agreed to come back, but Iha and Wretzky declined to participate in the recording of 2007’s Zeitgeist and the subsequent 20th anniversary tour.

Nobody knows exactly how many pumpkins will be featured in future line-ups.

Chris Cornell Defends New Album. Is He Alone?

In an interview with the online ‘zine Alternative Addiction, Chris Cornell is finally standing up to defend his new, nearly unlistenable album, Scream.

“I’m thrilled with the album that I made,” Cornell told the zine. ”I think it’s really exciting, I have listened to it as much or more than any album I have ever made.”

He may be the only one listening to this album. (And, we’re willing to bet that in a few months, he’ll admit this album is bad and make up some excuse about how he didn’t have complete control, or some nonsense like that.)

A strangely misguided collaboration between Cornell and Timbaland, Scream finds the ex-Alt-Rock icon exploring a sound filled with electronic flourishes, cringe-inducing lyrics, needlessly AutoTune processed vocals so weak they might be mistaken for Kanye West (hopefully Cornell won’t sink to lip-synching on his upcoming tour).

The reviews have ranged from lukewarm to cruel (”….enjoyable, at least in a monkey-riding-a-tricycle sort of way.”)

Keep reading for a few of our favorite quotes about Scream, an album that Nine Inch Nails leader Trent Reznor called “embarrassing” in his  recent Twitter review.

If you’ve actually heard this album, we’d like to know what you think about it, too. Continue reading »

Chris Cornell Goes Electronic, Kurt Cobain Spins in Grave.

If he had lived a little longer, do you think Kurt Cobain would’ve released a hip-hop album?

Or that Jimi Hendrix would’ve tried his luck with a career in country music?

Seems unlikely, right?

Well, another Seattle rock icon has traded his last shred of alt-rock credibility for a career alongside popstars like Madonna and the Pussycat Dolls.

On his new album, Scream, former grunge icon Chris Cornell (Soundgarden, AudioSlave) is trading his aggressive rock roots for the slick production of Timbaland (Ashlee Simpson, Missy Elliot, Flo Rida)

So, is the hard-rock singer’s foray into the world of electronic R&B really as horrible as it seems?

No.

It’s much, much worse. Continue reading »

Renowned, and reclusive, indie-rockers the Wrens racked up volumes of critical acclaim and fan adoration with 1996’s Secaucus and the much-anticipated follow-up, 2003’s the Meadowlands.

Deftly blending sharp indie rock attitude, jarring punk energy, surprisingly sweet harmonies and unexpected changes in musical direction, the band’s albums are challenging and easy-to-swallow at the same time. (Just go check out “Faster Gun.”)

Fans of everything from the Beatles to Husker Du are sure to find something to like in the band’s eclectic back catalog.

The group is still working on its next release (in the works for six years and counting), so impatient fans should be exceptionally eager to catch the band now-and perhaps even get a live sneak preview of the upcoming album.

The Wrens are playing as part of a line-up benefitting KEXP (90.3fm), a popular indie radio station and online music source. The show marks the one-year anniversary of KEXP’s co-broadcasting on New York’s 91.5fm

Also on the Bowery Ballroom bill are Titus Andronicus and We Were Promised Jetpacks (from Glasgow).

Miley Cyrus Vs Radiohead: Spoiled Brat or Snobbish Rockers?

Published March 6th, 2009 by Karen

Teen drama queen Miley Cyrus is making headlines once again, but this time it isn’t for her nude photos or tween-approved Disney pop: it’s for a very public teenage hissyfit.

Sounding a bit like spoiled brat Veruca Salt of Willy Wonka fame (y’know, the rotten egg), Cyrus has been complaining to anyone who’ll listen that she’s offended that Brit-rockers Radiohead didn’t agree to hang out with her backstage at the Grammys.

Cyrus was apparently so bummed that she left before the band performed “15 Step” during the ceremony.

MTV reports that Cyrus was extra upset because she’d, “…already texted all my friends that my life will be complete [if I get to meet Radiohead].”

Cyrus went on the claim that the band was the reason she loved music-although we’re sure Radiohead would prefer not to take the blame for unleashing her bland teen-pop on the world.

We thoroughly doubt that the Disney Queen’s tantrum will win the artsy rockers over. Then again, they’re British, so they are accustomed to doing whatever the Queen says.

"I hope they come to Ohio, I'd love to see them before they both disappear."

NIN/JA Tour: Nine Inch Nails, Jane’s Addiction Tour Dates, Tickets Announced

Published March 6th, 2009 by Karen

The unlikely reunion of Jane’s Addiction is really happening, and the band is set to hit the road with Nine Inch Nails for a nationwide tour beginning May 8 in Florida.

The tour is dubbed the NIN/JA tour, clever, huh?

NIN frontman Trent Reznor has previously blogged that it might be time for his band to “disappear for a while” after the tour. Whether that means the group will breakup remains to be seen.

In the meantime, fans worried that this will be their last chance to see NIN and a rare chance to see Jane’s Addiction can begin clamoring for tickets soon, probably through the usual ticketmaster outlets.

These are the dates that have been announced so far, but we won’t be surprised if more dates are added. Stay tuned.

Complete NIN/JA Tour dates after the jump. Continue reading »

Pearl Jam Break-up? 90s Bands You Thought Were Dead

Published June 10th, 2008 by Karen

When grunge hit the mainstream in 1991 thanks to Nirvana’s Nevermind, it seemed like there was an endless supply of alt-rock bands. There was, but, of course, music changes and boy bands and nu-metal eventually pushed the Seattle sound out of the spotlight.

Some of the biggest bands of the era have stuck around and hit it big. Some of them have just stuck around. Here’s a look at some bands that were big in the ‘90s but that you might not realize are still making music—regardless of whether anyone wants them to or not!

Smashing Pumpkins

With albums like Siamese Dream and the epic Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness , this Chicago outfit was at the top of the alt-rock pile. Then, drugs and singer Billy Corgan’s ego destroyed the group resulting in some lame-o side projects. The group reunited (if singer + drummer+ hired hands=reunion), in 2006 for a new album, Zeitgeist, not that anyone should care.

Stone Temple Pilots
Ok, so technically this band has been broken up for several years while frontman Weiland was off making tabloid headlines, court appearances and records with Velvet Revolver. However, the boys reunited in 2008 for a summer reunion gig. Initially written off as mere Pearl Jam/Alice in Chains wannabes thanks to songs like “Sex Type Thing” (video here), the band managed to build a solid career for itself, despite the critical onslaught.

Mudhoney
They didn’t explode in the mainstream the same way Pearl Jam and Nirvana did, but Seattle’s Mudhoney were prominent figures in the grunge scene just the same. Songs such as “Touch Me I’m Sick” are underground classics, making this band one of those groups that many musicians cite as an influence, for good reason. The band’s latest effort, The Lucky Ones, was released in last month. The band is seemingly always on tour, see dates here.

Pearl Jam

Now, for some people this one seems pretty obvious, but considering the band’s decade-long invisibility to radio and MTV, we’re guessing that lots of folks outside of the circle of diehards who collect the live albums the band releases with a nearly Grateful Dead-like frequency, may have believed the band rode off into the Seattle sunset. However the band is alive and well, the boys are even playing Bonnaroo this weekend.

Hole
Regardless of whether Kurt Cobain did or didn’t write the songs for Hole’s breakthrough album, Live Through This, the fact remains that the band had a following before that album, and after it, too. From dirty riot grrl roots to Billy Corgan-assisted popstars, Hole was probably the biggest female group of the era (our apologies to guitarist Erik Erlandson). Whether the band will regroup remains to be seen. Courtney Love’s most recent effort was a solo project, America’s Sweetheart. Hopefully, the next Hole album will suck less.

Nada Surf
This trio was part of the less-grungy segment of the alt-rock nation. The NYC nerd-rock group was largely (and rightfully) written off as a one-hit-wonder after scoring a buzz-worthy MTV video with 1996’s deadpan ode to teenage self-absorption, indie-rock whininess and sour grapes, “Popular.” (watch video here) The spoken word track finds the group offering dating tips for the pre-O.C. set such as “wash your hair.” Ironically, the guys had that greasy, bedhead look going on. At any rate, this band continues to release records, for some reason.
