If, for some strange reason, you’d like to date 25-year-old pop-snot Avril Lavigne, good news: She’s getting a divorce

The singer has cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for her split from hubby/Sum 41 pop-punk Deryck Whibley. (Who? Exactly. Think Good Charlotte, but somehow more annoying.)

On the plus side, the Canadian mall-punk power couple called it off before they had a chance to have a baby with a dumber name than the spawn of Ashlee Simpson (lip-syncher) and Pete Wentz (Fall Out Boy).

Gossip Girl Music: Pretty Reckless–Love or Lavigne?

Published August 19th, 2009 by Karen

ABOVE: Is this Gossip Girl starlet the next Courtney Love, or just another Avril Lavigne?

In a recent photo, Gossip Girl star/aspiring musician Taylor Momsen looks strikingly similar to musician/actress Courtney Love.

Of course, being 16 and resembling a fairly haggard 45 year old might not be a compliment.

At any rate, the teen star is attempting to branch out by shifting away from the world of shallow teen TV drama and into the world, of, well, slightly-less-shallow pop-rock.

In fairness, Momsen and her band, the Pretty Reckless, are light years ahead of most of the other celebri-teen albums by dance-pop nightmares like Ashley Tisdale, Vanessa Hudgens (anyone seen the commercials for Bandslam? Ugh) and Brooke Hogan–not to mention GG co-star/Cobra Starship collaborator Leighton Meester.

Momsen is offering a free pair of tracks online: “Zombie” (Better than the Cranberries track, but not as cool as the King Khan & BBQ song of the same name) and “He Loves You.”

Leaked: Adam Lambert On with the Show a New Album of Old Songs

Published June 23rd, 2009 by Karen

ABOVE: Before he was famous: Adam Lambert in a 10 Commandments musical, with Val Kilmer, of course.

LISTEN: Adam Lambert-”Want”

Little known record label HiFi Recordings, one-time home to Avril Lavigne, Donny Osmond and Smashmouth, has announced plans to release an album by American Idol runner-up Adam Lamber-whether he likes it, or not.

The album, On with the Show, is composed of material Lambert recorded prior to his successful–and somewhat controversial–run on Idol. To the dismay of Lambert, and fans of his glam-rock image, the songs included on the album are ultra-glossy pop numbers full of cheesy keyboards and sappy lyrics more suited to a sensitive boy-bander than an aspiring rock star. Tracks from the album have already been leaked online, including lead single “Want,” currently streaming on the label’s website.

Sample lyric:December/ Change of the weather/ You were by my side/Love is all we want/ Love, love, love.”

Uh-huh.

Embarrassing? You bet. Check out the lead single, “Want” above, then tell us what you think.

Miley Cyrus Steals “Rockstar” Song from Lustra? Um, Who is Lustra?

So, Miley Cyrus might be the most annoying teenager on the planet at the moment (aside for the spoiled monsters of MTV’s Super-Sweet 16 nightmare).

However, things are getting ugly again for this Disney princess.

In the wake of her Vanity Fair Miley Cyrus nude photos controversy, the 15-year-old is being pummeled with negative attention once again. This time, she’s being accused of theft.

Page Six reports that rock band Lustra is alleging that Miley’s song “Rockstar” sounds way too close to their tune “Scotty Doesn’t Know.”

Yeah, we’ve never heard of it either. Apparently it was on the soundtrack to Eurotrip.

Frankly, both songs are pretty bad. And, for what it’s worth, Cyrus probably didn’t “write” this song anyway. There’s a crew of songwriters employed by Mickey Mouse to do that for her. She’s too busy, um, posing for photos and showing off her bra.

Anyway, you can hear both songs here and decide for yourself.

If this all sounds kinda familiar, it’s because Avril Lavigne was recently accused of stealing her song “Girlfriend” from the Rubinoos. You can hear both songs here and judge for yourself. FYI—Lavigne settled the case out of court for an undisclosed, and presumably LARGE, sum of cash. We’re just saying…

American Idol’s Chris Daughtry faced similar charges, here.

What Do You Think?
Did Miley steal her song “Rockstar” from another band?
Or is this group just trying to cash in on her fame?
Leave a comment and tell us what you think!

Plagiarism Scandal for American Idol Daughtry, Beatles and Avril Lavigne

Published April 11th, 2008 by Karen

Bratty mall-punk Avril Lavigne and songwriting cohort Dr. Luke recently faced accusations that her hit song “Girlfriend” was largely stolen from the Rubinoos’ 1979 song, “I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend.” As the comparison here illustrates, the two songs are rather remarkably similar.

Lavigne denied that she had ever even heard the Rubinoos song, but the case was ultimately settled out of court, presumably for a considerable wad of cash.

Given the fact that Lavigne doesn’t exactly seem like a music expert (remember when she mispronounced David Bowie’s name while introducing the Grammy nominee in 2003? Read about it, here.), we believe she probably hadn’t heard the Rubinoos song. But, it seems likely that her songwriting partners had.

AOL reports that Dr. Luke is being investigated again, and this time he’s taking former American Idol contestant Chris Daughtry with him. In handy video clips, AOL compares Daughtry’s schmaltzy song, “Feels Like Tonight” with the Asphalt’s “Tonight.”

Once again, the verdict seems pretty obvious.

Regardless of whether these songs were actually plagiarized, the fact remains: they suck.

And, if these songs are not only awful, but also stolen, then that is truly pathetic.
It’s one thing to write a bad song—but to swipe one?

Of course, Daughtry and Lavigne aren’t the first music stars to be accused of unlawfully copying someone else’s music.

Over the years, numerous rap and hip-hop groups have faced charges for illegal use of samples, but at least those infringements are at little more obvious, and perhaps less malicious.

In 1976, Beatles guitarist George Harrison was charged with copyright infringement after allegedly taking the melody for his post-Beatles song “My Sweet Lord” from the Chiffons’ 1963 hit, “He’s So Fine.” The court rule against Harrison, despite his protestation that while he didn’t intentionally copy the song, he may have “subconsciously copied” the melody.

Whether or not Harrison was guilty, at least he had good taste.

What do you think?

Did Daughtry steal “Feel Like Tonight” from another band? Leave a comment and tell us what you think.
