Gun’n’Roses Accused of Theft by German Musician: Compare

Over a decade in the making, the already disappointing 2008 Guns’n'Roses disc Chinese Democracy, just got a little worse. It seems that even with this much time to put it all together Guns’n'Roses (AKA Axl Rose and some guys who aren’t Slash) still couldn’t come up with an album on their own, so they stole one.

Ulrich Schnauss, an electronic music artist in Germany, is suing Axl and Co., charging that the band unlawfully used samples of his music on the song “Riad N’ the Bedouins.”

(Below: Compare the Guns’n'Roses track to Schnauss’s tunes)

Yeah, we don’t remember that song either. Chinese Democracy was pretty awful; we’re glad we forgot it. (Apparently, over 3 million people bought it, but we’re not sure why…)

After comparing the songs in question (below), it seems pretty clear that Continue reading »

Guns’n’Roses’ Drummer will Join Your Band for $75k. Really.

Published February 27th, 2009 by Karen

The chance to rock out with someone who has survived life with Axl Rose? That’s just one of the odd items available in one of the strangest music memorabilia sales ever.

Drummer-for-hire extraordinaire Josh Freese may not be a familiar name to those of us who don’t spend our days reading drum magazines and testing out cymbals at the local music store, but odds are you’ve heard his music.

Over the years, Freese has backed everyone for everyone from Avril Lavigne, Daughtry and Katy Perry (lame), to Chris Cornell, the Offspring and Ween.

Freese co-wrote the title track of Guns’n’Roses’ Chinese Democracy and is currently a member of A Perfect Circle, Devo and the Vandals. (Original G’n'R drummer Steven Adler is unfortunately busy with various celeb rehab reality shows.)

Even with all of his drumming gigs, Freese apparently still has time for a few jokes.

In connection with his new album, Since 1972, Freese has put together a list of unusual promotional items that he is selling. He claims the list is authentic, but we’ll let you decide. It’s certainly more interesting that the usual $20 “deluxe version” CD that most bands offer up.

Prices range from $7 for digital downloads of his new album, available March 24, to $75,000 for the chance to have Freese join your band for a month.

Some of the options are much stranger, including lunch at the Cheesecake Factory, a car wash or a drunken haircut from Freese.

At the $75,000 level you can even have Josh write, record and release a 5-song EP about you and your life story and take home one of his drum kits. (See the full list after the jump). Continue reading »

Axl Rose Sues Dr Pepper plus Free Guns n Roses ringtones

Published December 1st, 2008 by Karen

As if the world needed one more reason to hate Axl Rose (isn’t the white spandex reason enough?), the always affable (ahem) singer is now suing Dr Pepper over a promotion wherein the company promised to deliver free Dr Pepper to everyone in the world (except ex-members of Guns’n’Roses) if Rose would release the much-delayed album by the end of 2008

Rose unexpectedly released the album in November—after working on it for a decade and a half and cycling through a Spinal Tap-esque number of bandmates. Even more surprising was the fact that Dr. Pepper lived up to its end of the bargain by offering coupons for free soda on its website.

Or at least Dr. Pepper attempted to offer coupons. Website issues and clogged phonelines made the promotion a less-than-smashing success, as Rose points out in his seemingly only semi-serious suit.

Rose is lobbing accusations that the company’s publicity stunt failed and attempted to unlawfully cash in on his band’s popularity.

Uh-huh.

Ironically, Rose’s suit against Dr. Pepper seems to be his attempt to cash in on the company’s popularity and the publicity generated by its Guns’n’Roses-themed stunt.

While he may technically have a point, we have to admit that free Dr. Pepper is much more appealing than the new Guns’n’Roses disc (free Chinese Democracy Mp3s here. Free Guns’n’Roses downloads and free guns n roses ringtones here).

In his defense, Rose is only asking for a published apology from the company.

No word on whether Rose actually drinks Dr. Pepper.

Free Chinese Democracy Free Guns’n’Roses mp3s Guns’n’Roses Tour Dates

Published November 20th, 2008 by Karen

It has taken something like 16 years and an ever-changing army of musicians to finish this, but Axl Rose/Guns’n'Roses has finally unveiled Chinese Democracy.

Since Axl and the boys (whoever they happen to be at the moment) are feeling generous, fans can listen to the entire album for free here or you can download free Guns’n’Roses mp3s.

We’re not sure that Guns’n’Roses’ decision to give away Chinese Democracy has anything to do with the fact that it’s almost Thanksgiving, but thanks anyway!

We have a feeling that Axl and Co. are giving this stuff away because they’re afraid nobody will buy it. Regardless of how much this album does or doesn’t suck, we’re kinda hoping for a reunion tour. Although, last time we checked, former drummer Steven Adler was still part of that Celebrity Rehab reality show, so maybe they should leave him alone.
