From his album art to his music videos, Mika’s colorful world looks like a Skittles commercial gone wild. Hyperactive rainbows assault the senses from all directions, including Mika’s over-the-top cute vocals, choirs of children and slick beats that would be just as at home backing Sean Kingston or Lady Gaga.

Spiderman Joins Jonas Brothers: Disney Buys Marvel.

Tobey Maguire’s emo-boy portrayal of Peter Parker may have made Spider-Man into one of the comic book world’s wussiest superheroes, but news that the franchise is now owned by Disney is disappointing nonetheless.

(Of course, news of U2’s impending Spider-Man Broadway musical hasn’t helped Spidey’s image, either.)

Mickey Mouse and Co. are attempting to attract a wider male audience to the Disney fold by buying Marvel Entertainment Inc. Among the company’s 5,000+ characters are Spiderman, Iron Man, X Men and the Fantastic Four.

The multi-billion dollar deal was announced on Monday. It remains to be seen whether  any character’s secret identity will be revealed to be Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus, or whether the Jonas Brothers are about to develop superpowers other than the ability to hypnotize young girls with their squeaky-voiced pop songs.

What is the scariest Disney-Marvel superhero you can imagine? Spider-Jonas? Wolverine-Montana? Tell us!

Bret Michaels Injured at Tony Awards (video)

Published June 8th, 2009 by Wendy

Rock singer Bret Michaels had a collision with some stage scenery during last night’s Tony Awards show, according to an Associated Press report.

According to the AP, Michaels, who is the star of the reality show “Rock of Love,” went onstage with his hair-metal band Poison during the telecast’s opening production number, which featured performances from the season’s Broadway musicals.

They performed “Nothin’ But a Good Time” with the cast of “Rock of Ages,” and as Michaels exited the stage, a falling set piece smacked him on the head and knocked him to the ground. Though it looked like the scenery broke his nose, it did not, according to a Tony spokesperson, who said the incident happened because Michaels “missed his mark.”

The musical Rock of Ages celebrates 1980s hair music and features songs by Journey and other classic rock bands. It stars Constantine Maroulis as an aspiring rock star.

"I don't like ABBA... I hate it when I go to a club to find out they decided to play oldies all night... These songs make me sick."

Green Day Heads to Broadway

We wonder if Broadway fans are happy that so many rock bands are headed to the stage these days.

First, came news that U2 is helming a new Spiderman musical (which doesn’t seem like a good idea).

Now, word is out that Green Day is set to debut a musical based on its 2004 album, American Idiot.

A multi-platinum smash, American Idiot was a concept album that dealt with issues related to politics and war, all with Green Day’s melodic, arena-ready, pop-punk spin. Some of the characters from the album’s songs are slated to appear as characters in the play.

The theatrical version of the album, set to debut in California on September 4, is being directed by Michael Mayer, known for his hit musical, Spring Awakening. Continue reading »

Dolly Parton Works “9 to 5″

take a chance, yo

Even veteran entertainers get the jitters when it comes to opening night on Broadway, Dolly Parton recently told Billboard.com as she prepares to bring the musical “9 to 5″ to the Great White Way.

“I’m anxious about it,” the country music legend told Billboard.com. “I’ve been working on this for four years, and the thing about Broadway is you could work four years and close the next night — or never open at all. Everything’s a chance.”

Parton co-starred in the 1980 film of the same name and wrote the score for the Broadway production — including the new song “Backwoods Barbie,” which is also the title of her latest album. Co-screenwriter Patricia Resnick wrote the book.

“9 to 5″ begins previews on April 7 at the Marquis Theater in New York City after a fall workshop run in Los Angeles, with the formal premiere slated for April 30.

Odd News: Rolling Stone Plagiarizes the Onion? Three Stooges Reunite?

Is there a full moon tonight? For some reason, every story we’ve read this morning seems really weird. Hopefully, it’s not going to be one of those bizarro days that makes us wish we’d just stayed in bed hoping someone would show up to deliver french toast or something. Anyway, here’s a quick look at what’s up this morning, so far…

First, life really does imitate art. Either that, or Rolling Stone is getting even lazier than we thought.

This is a fake headline from the Onion published 8/8/08: Soundgarden Inadvertently Reunites At Area Cinnabon

This is a real headline from today’s Rolling Stone: Soundgarden Nearly Reunite At Tom Morello Justice Tour Stop in Seattle

Spooky.

Second, Dolly Parton is not a lesbian. (Which is funny, since she looks like a drag queen. Seriously, she rocks though.) She did get cut from the new Hannah Montana movie though.

Third, ok, this isn’t really about music, but it still bothers us that Hollywood is about to ruin another classic.

The Farrelly Brothers are reviving the Three Stooges with a new movie starring Jim Carrey (Curly), Sean Penn (Larry) and, possibly, Benicio del Toro (Moe). Seriously? SERIOUSLY?! This is the stupidest thing we’ve heard since news broke that U2 is writing a Spiderman musical for Broadway. According to the Indie Film site, the Farrellys are describing the film as dumb, dumber and dumbest. Ugh.

We’re just hoping Hollywood keeps its filthy paws off of Laurel and Hardy, and Abbott and Costello. C’mon, you know the studio execs would love to remake these movies with George Clooney, Don Cheadle, Jack Black, Ben Stiller or Robert Downey, Jr. or something stupid like that. Enough already! U2 Writing Spiderman Musical? Run Spidey!

Published February 27th, 2009 by Karen

Comic book superhero Spiderman has survived almost 50 years of battling scores of super-evil super-villains, but it looks like the web-slinger is about to face his most difficult battle yet…On Broadway.

As if Toby McGuire’s puppy-eyed portrayal of the arachnid hero as a lovesick emo nerd perpetually on the verge of tears wasn’t bad enough, it looks like Spiderman is about to star in a Broadway show directed by Julie Taymor, of Lion King Fame.

Since it is Broadway, this isn’t just a play: it’s a musical.

The good news is that the music isn’t being written by the seemingly inescapable Bruce Springsteen.

The bad news is that the music is being written by the equally inescapable U2.

Ah well, at least Beyonce isn’t involved…yet.

Remember that, um, awesome, song U2 came up with for Batman Forever (”Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill Me“)? Our spidey sense is tingling, and we’re pretty sure this is going to be even worse.

Who in Stan Lee’s name thought this was a good idea?

Is a Spiderman musical a good idea?

Who do you think should write the music?

"The show let her go on knowing her background. Enough said."

Fired Broadway “Annie” Joanna Pacitti Disqualified from American Idol 2009 Finalists

Published February 12th, 2009 by Karen

Flickr photo by unk’s dump truck After weeks of uproar among American Idol fans and music blogs, American Idol has finally disqualified Joanna Pacitti.

Fox is keeping quiet on the subject, having issued a statement that Joanna Pacitti was simply “ineligible to continue.”

The news of her disqualification is somewhat shocking because she had been selected as one of the top 36 finalists the night before.

Since Pacitti is known to have ties to Idol bigshots and industry insiders, it is tempting to think the producers of the show had planned on kicking her out of the contest all along, but decided to keep her around long enough to drum up some extra publicity for her ice cold career comeback.

Like Season Seven finalist Irish singer Carly Smithson (AKA Carly Hennessy), Pacitti was not a new, undiscovered singing talent; she was a failed popstar whose major label album (for Geffen) flopped in a huge way. Continue reading »
