Pop Star, 41, Pregnant Again. Good Idea?

Published August 18th, 2009 by Karen

ABOVE: Oh, no. Not again…

Oprah’s favorite Canadian pop nightmare, Celine Dion, is pregnant with her second child thanks to the magic of in vitro fertilzaton, Us Magazine reports.

Aside from the fact that there are zillions of babies that would love to be adopted by, well, anybody, we dread the thought that a few years from now we might be cursed with the music of a second generation of skeletal over-singers.

Due in May, this will be the second child for Dion, 41, and 67-year-old husband, Rene Angelil. We really really don’t want to be mean but, seriously, by the time the new baby is 18, Angelil will be 85…that doesn’t seem like a lot of fun for anyone involved. We wish them the best though.

Do you think super-rich celebrities should adopt children more often?

Are you ever really too old to have kids?

Female artists ruled Forbes magazine’s Top-Earning Musicians list of the year, with Madonna, Celine Dion and Beyoncé taking the top three spots, according to a report last week on RollingStone.com

Madonna, who set records with her sold-out Sticky & Sweet tour and had international success with her Hard Candy album, made roughly $110 million to top the list of profits earned from June 2008 to June 2009. (Her expensive divorce from Guy Ritchie was not factored into the equation.)

Dion came in second with $100 million, followed by Beyoncé, who made $87 million thanks to touring, I Am… Sasha Fierce album and promotional deals. Bruce Springsteen was the top earning rocker, coming in fourth with $70 million on the strength of a successful tour, Working on a Dream album and his Super Bowl performance.

Despite the recession, overall numbers were up considerably from last year: This year’s top 10 made a combined $719 million, while 2008’s top 10 only earned $500 million all together.

Cinco de Mayo Music: Mexican Wrestling Masks, Guitars and the Twist with Los Straitjackets

Above: A surf-rock guitar band with members doing synchronized dance moves and wearing sparkly Mexican wrestler masks? Must be Cinco de Mayo!

Nashville’s Spanish-speaking instrumental surf-rock outift Los Straitjackets may not be the first thing you think of when you think of Mexican music or Cinco de Mayo, but with their upbeat sound and fun live shows, we thought their music was a fine fit for this festive day. (Yes, we know Cinco de Mayo actually marks the Mexican army’s victory over French troops at the Battle of Puebla in 1862, but let’s face it, most of you probably use it as an excuse to drink margaritas after work-and Los Straitjackets are a fine margarita soundtrack. So there.)

The band is known equally well for its oddball costumes (black turtlenecks, over-size medallions and sequined wrestler masks) and its almost mechanically tight guitar antics. (If you want to dress as your favorite Straitjacket-Daddy-O, Angel, Evil Pedro and Teen Hornet-the band sells replicas of their famous masks online, tons of CDs and 7″s, too. Replicas of their wacky guitars are also available.)

Although it formed in 1988, this instrumental outfit didn’t make its proper debut until 1994 with the release of the modestly titled album, The Utterly Fantastic and Totally Unbelievable Sound of Los Straitjackets.

Over two decades into its career, the band is still touring constantly with an unusual live revue that often includes a troupe of go-go-dancing burlesque triplets (the World Famous Pontani Sisters) and sometimes Continue reading »

American Idol Recap: iTunes, Racism, Funerals and…David Spade?

Tuesday was iTunes night on American Idol, which means the contestants were allowed to choose songs from those among the most downloaded on the music site. The most surprising part of the night was that these awful songs rank among the most downloaded.

Celine Dion fans use computers? Crazy.

Anyway, for those of you who didn’t tune in for the complete Idol play-by-play, we’ve got the rundown with the complete playlist from last night’s show and quick notes on each of the performances. It’s like watching the show on fast forward (which is, of course, the best way to watch it).

The best part of Idol this week was obviously David Spade, who was seated directly behind chatterbox Kara Dioguardi. He looked as bored as we were, but we’re a little disappointed that he didn’t really misbehave on camera. Oh well.

Keep reading for reviews from last night’s show and the scoop on why we think Idol is being oddly racist this year (not to mention the condescension toward blind contestant Scott MacIntyre).

Matt Giraud-”You Found Me” (The Fray) The judges reprimanded Giraud for trying too hard to sound like a rock singer, which makes us wonder: is the Fray a “rock” band? If watered down Coldplay is what passes for rock music these days, we’re trading our iPods for phonographs (the old timey ones that only play wax cylinders) and giving up on this whole mess.
