It seems Gloria Estefan will do anything for her jobless fans in Puerto Rico.

The Latin superstar bought some 2,000 tickets for her weekend concert in the U.S. territory and will distribute them by raffle amongst 17,000 government workers who learned they will be laid-off as of November 6, according to an Associated Press report.

Estefan bought all the remaining upper-level tickets - at $40 each - as a gift to those who were affected, said a spokesman for the singer. Officials have begun to distribute the tickets to various government agencies, which will raffle them off.

According to the AP, Puerto Rico is facing a $3.2 billion budget deficit and 15 percent unemployment. The government announced the layoffs in late September to help close the budget gap.

Tickets to the seven-time Grammy winner’s Saturday concert range from $40 to $125. So far, about 8,000 tickets are spoken for.

Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor was recently honored by various branches of New York government for his work leading a campaign to raise money for Eric De La Cruz, a Nevada fan who needed a heart transplant, according to a report on RollingStone.com

Both New York Senator Charles Schumer and Governor David Patterson wrote a letter thanking Reznor for his aid, which helped raise nearly a million dollars to assist De La Cruz with his medical expenses, according to the report.

The money was raised during a Nine Inch Nails’ tour with Jane’s Addiction, when both bands offered deluxe ticket packages that allowed fans to meet the groups before the show. All of the proceeds from these packages went straight to helping De La Cruz, who is the brother of former CNN anchor Veronica De La Cruz.

Reznor, known for albums like Pretty Hate Machine and The Downward Spiral, has been involved in other causes.  In 2006, he narrated a video for PETA, describing the cat and dog fur trade in China and urging viewers to avoid fur clothing.

The famously tech savy Reznor recently made headlines after exiting the social site Twitter after calling its users “idiots.”

UPDATE: Spinner reports that Eric De La Cruz passed away July 4, 2009. He had not yet been well enough to undergo transplant surgery. He was 27.

ABOVE: Dirty Projectors debut a new song with Icelandic star Bjork during a benefit concert at NYC’s Housing Works in May.

Amid the swelling internet buzz surrounding the band’s new album, Bitte Orca, Brooklyn’s Dirty Projectors have been forced to cancel some upcoming tour dates after being involved in a serious car accident, in which the band’s tour van was hit by a semi and flipped over on the highway.

The photos are rather frightening, but amazingly nobody in the band was seriously injured, despite the fact that two of the passengers were not wearing seatbelts. No word on the condition of the driver of the semi has been given.

The band’s scheduled dates in Montreal and Toronto this week have been cancelled. Stay tuned for updates on whether additional shows will be cancelled or rescheduled.

Following the accident, the Dirty Projectors quickly posted an update on the band’s MySpace blog.

Nick Jonas spent yesterday lobbying Washington D.C. big shots on the need for diabetes research, even stopping for a photo op with President Barack Obama, according to an Associated Press report.

The arrival of the youngest Jonas sent Capitol Hill interns scurrying for their cameras, according to the AP. “I know some people can become star-struck and lose sight of what they’re here for, but if Nick Jonas makes juvenile diabetes a cause that people are more aware of, it’s worth it,” said Ashley Woolos, an American University student and intern in the office of Rep. Richard Neal, D-Mass.

Jonas, 16, is scheduled to testify before two Senate committees today on federal funding for diabetes research. Other witnesses include boxer Sugar Ray Leonard and actress Mary Tyler Moore.

Nick Jonas publicly revealed that he has Type 1 diabetes while performing at a Diabetes Research Institute fundraiser in 2007. The Jonas Brothers released their fourth CD, Lines, Vines and Trying Times, last week.

In a perhaps somewhat misguided attempt at philanthropy following her recently denied second Malawi adoption, Madonna has decided to donate money to help the victims of the devastating earthquakes that ravaged L’Aquila, Italy earlier this week.

Unfortunately, Madonna has donated her money to a town that was not actually in the quake zone. Continue reading »
