Bob Dylan Christmas Music Video Debuts, Confuses

Published November 17th, 2009 by Karen

ABOVE: Bob Dylan’s strangely chipper new Christmas album might be the weirdest thing he’s done since appearing in this creepy lingerie ad.

With a Christmas album, Christmas in the Heart,  that hit stores just in time for Halloween, it seems fitting that Bob Dylan has released the CD’s debut music video just in time for another non-Christmas holiday: Thanksgiving.

The new clip for “Must Be Santa” features Dylan leading the holiday polka at a swanky baby-boomer house party while wearing a variety of hats (including a mad hatter-esque top hat and Santa hat, both of which apparently have Jennifer Aniston wigs sewn inside). Continue reading »

New Tori Amos ‘Midwinter Graces’: Creepy for Christmas

Published October 7th, 2009 by Karen

These days, Tori Amos looks like the Botoxed nightmare before Christmas, but that isn’t stopping the interminably quirky, red-haired pianist from making what would have probably been the strangest and most unnecessary Christmas disc of the year had Bob Dylan not already announced plans for a Christmas album of his own.

A straggling third, Sting is throwing his hat into the ring as well, with If on a Winter’s Night

Budget Christmas Gifts Compare mp3 players iPod and Zune

Published December 18th, 2008 by Karen

While Microsoft’s Zune mp3 player doesn’t have the same panache as the ubiquitous iPod, the player is making some pretty creative changes lately.

While iPods ordered directly from the Apple website give users the option of having a personalized message laser-engraved on the player’s metal shell, Zune is offering customers of its website the option of engraving personalized messages and elaborate images.

This one-up of the Apple engraving is nice—and sure to be a hit during the holidays. The only downside is that users are not allowed to upload their own artwork to the site for engraving. Instead, customers select from an array of artwork from the Zune engraving  gallery. While some of the psychedelic, animal-themed, zodiac-inspired images are cool, it would’ve been awesome to be able to add your own custom image. Continue reading »

What is the Worst Christmas Song Ever?

Published December 17th, 2008 by Karen

After passing a copy of “White Wedding” singer Billy Idol’s pointless Christmas album in the discount bin (thankfully, he’s not wearing his nightmare-ish leather underpants on the cover of the album), we started wondering what other holiday nightmares are lurking the forgotten corners of the music world. Julianne Hough from Dancing with the Stars has a holiday album, Sounds of the Season: The Julianne Hough Holiday Collection, and country superstar Faith Hill has just released Joy to the World.

Many stars release Christmas songs instead of entire albums. Still, Mariah Carey’s holiday anthem Mariah Carey All I Want for Christmas mp3 doesn’t really get us in the holiday mood the same way a few annoyingly catchy choruses of Jingle Bells mp3 do—but Mariah’s number isn’t the worst of the bunch. (Do the Pussycat Dolls have a Christmas album yet? We’re pretty sure that would be the worst idea EVER.) Continue reading »

Nightmare Before Christmas Sequel Soundtrack With Marilyn Manson

Published October 9th, 2008 by Karen

Tim Burton’s stylish 1993 film The Nightmare Before Christmas has become something of a cult classic, particularly among goth rock kids and Hot Topic shoppers. The story of the Mayor of Halloweentown discovering the magic of Christmas blends elements of musical theatre and holiday and horror film classics, all with Burton’s typical dark edge.

Some 15 years later, a follow-up to the movie is finally being released…sort of.

Nightmare Revisited is the sequel to the original soundtrack of the popular film. This time around, the movie’s musical numbers are being covered by an array of rock, punk, hard-rock and other artists.

Among the high-profile performers offering their interpretations of the musical’s hits are Marilyn Manson, All American Rejects, Korn and Amy Lee of Evanescence.

While the film was re-released to theatres in a 3-D edition, there are still no plans for a sequel—thanks goodness. The original film is interesting because it has a unique look and story, so some sort of computer-animated Disney-style follow-up would only detract from it.

Nightmare Before Christmas 2 Nightmare Revisited Soundtrack highlights:
“Overture” (DeVotchKa)
“Opening” (Danny Elfman)
“This Is Halloween” (free Marilyn Manson mp3)
“Jack’s Lament” (The All-American Rejects)
“Doctor Finkelstein/In The Forest” (Amiina)
“What’s This?” (Flyleaf)
“Town Meeting Song” (The Polyphonic Spree)
“Jack and Sally Montage” (The Vitamin String Quartet)
“Jack’s Obsession” (Sparklehorse)
“Kidnap the Sandy Claws” (Free Korn mp3
“Making Christmas” (Rise Against)
“Nabbed” (Yoshida Brothers)
“Oogie Boogie’s Song” (Rodrigo y Gabriela)
“Sally’s Song” (Amy Lee)
“Christmas Eve Montage” (RJD2)
“Poor Jack” (free Plain White T’s mp3
“To the Rescue” (Datarock)
“Finale/Reprise” (Shiny Toy Guns)
“Closing” (Danny Elfman)
“End Title” (The Album Leaf)
