Question Mark and the Mysterians Documentary and Creepy New Video

Published May 5th, 2009 by Karen

Above: A needlessly creepy new video for ? and the Mysterians’ 1966 hit “96 Tears.” Who knew Question Mark had his own action figure? Watch out, Barbie.

Another number in honor of Cinco de Mayo–not that we need an excuse for some garage-rock fun.

Best known for the 1966 hit “96 Tears,” to garage-rock fans around the world, Question Mark and the Mysterians (or ? & the Mysterians) remains one of the most popular Mexican-American bands around.

It has continued to tour with different line-ups over the years, but in 2007, the band was unwittingly thrust back into the spotlight when band leader Question Mark (Rudy Martinez) lost his Michigan home and dog-breeding business in a fire. Fans and musicians around the country united for a series of benefit concerts featuring a wide array of rock and garage-rock bands.

Cinco de Mayo Music: Mexican Wrestling Masks, Guitars and the Twist with Los Straitjackets

Above: A surf-rock guitar band with members doing synchronized dance moves and wearing sparkly Mexican wrestler masks? Must be Cinco de Mayo!

Nashville’s Spanish-speaking instrumental surf-rock outift Los Straitjackets may not be the first thing you think of when you think of Mexican music or Cinco de Mayo, but with their upbeat sound and fun live shows, we thought their music was a fine fit for this festive day. (Yes, we know Cinco de Mayo actually marks the Mexican army’s victory over French troops at the Battle of Puebla in 1862, but let’s face it, most of you probably use it as an excuse to drink margaritas after work-and Los Straitjackets are a fine margarita soundtrack. So there.)

The band is known equally well for its oddball costumes (black turtlenecks, over-size medallions and sequined wrestler masks) and its almost mechanically tight guitar antics. (If you want to dress as your favorite Straitjacket-Daddy-O, Angel, Evil Pedro and Teen Hornet-the band sells replicas of their famous masks online, tons of CDs and 7″s, too. Replicas of their wacky guitars are also available.)

Although it formed in 1988, this instrumental outfit didn’t make its proper debut until 1994 with the release of the modestly titled album, The Utterly Fantastic and Totally Unbelievable Sound of Los Straitjackets.

Over two decades into its career, the band is still touring constantly with an unusual live revue that often includes a troupe of go-go-dancing burlesque triplets (the World Famous Pontani Sisters) and sometimes Continue reading »

Hola, music fans.

The bad news is, it is Monday again—but don’t let it get you down—today is also Cinco de Mayo!

What does that mean?

It means that you have a reason to organize a fabulous fiesta to celebrate this Monday with great music, food and fun.

What’s all the fuss about? Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican holiday dating back to 1862. The day is a celebration of General Ignacio Zaragoza’s victory over French forces in the Battle of Puebla.

Of course, you don’t have to live in Mexico to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. Many people throughout the world celebrate the Irish holiday St. Patrick’s Day, even if they’re not Irish. The same is true of Cinco de Mayo. Think of it as a day to celebrate your heritage, or to learn about a new culture—and have fun at the same time.

Since this is the internet, we can’t really make you dinner (sorry, ha ha), but we can point you in the direction of some awesome easy Mexican recipes, here. These dishes—including super-yummy Huevos Rancheros and refreshing Frozen Horchata drinks—are quick and easy and will taste even better if you eat ‘em while enjoying some great Mexican and Spanish music downloads—musica gratis.
