Girls Rock: 7 Hot Girls Who Could Win Guitar Hero III

Published August 14th, 2008 by Karen

While the world counts gold medals in China during in the controversial 2008 Olympics, we’d like to focus on something more important than lip-synching little girls and fake fireworks: video games.

For some reason, video games have typically been the domain of lonely boys.
Same goes for rock’n’roll, to some extent.

So, in honor of rockin’ ladies everywhere, we present today’s list of hot chicks that could beat you at Guitar Hero III. Enjoy.

7 Hot Girls Who Could Destroy You (at Guitar Hero III)
7. The Donnas—Take it Off video
Ok, we don’t actually know which of the Donnas play guitar (they’re all named Donna). But, we know that this rock’n’roll girl-gang would make playing video games seem a lot less lame.

6. Joan Jett—I Love Rock’n’Roll mp3
Ok, so Joan wasn’t exactly a guitar geek ripping through sweet solos, but a few well-played power chords can go a long way.

5. Lita Ford—Kiss Me Deadly mp3
While her fashion choices were embarrassing (skank-o leather bathing suit thingies), and her hair was huge (well, it was the ‘80s, after all), there’s no denying that Lita could shred (she dueted with Ozzy!).

4. Nancy Wilson/Heart—Barracuda mp3
One word: “Barracuda.” Yup.

3. Courtney Love/Hole—Violet mp3
She may not be the best of the female guitarists, but she is probably the craziest, and you should never, ever underestimate the power of crazy.

2. Kaki King—Playing with Pink Noise video
Probably the most technically gifted of our list, King made a name for herself with her complex playing style and intricate fingerwork. Personally, we don’t want to listen to it, but we’re pretty sure her coordination would translate well to the fake guitar of Guitar Hero.

1. Wanda Jackson—Fujiyama Mama video
There’s a good reason a young rockabilly guitarist/singer named Wanda Jackson was known as the female Elvis (she also dated him as a teen, but that another story). She’s 71 now, but she still owns you, punk. We think Lisa Marie should name her twins after Wanda.

Is there a rockin’ lady we forgot to put on our list?
Leave a comment and tell us about her!
And don’t forget to tell us what your best Guitar Hero score is!

Bonnaroo 2008 Robert Plant VS Lez Zeppelin?

Published June 2nd, 2008 by Karen

The line-up for this year’s Bonnaroo Festival has just been announced.

For the uninitiated, Bonaroo is a four-day music and arts festival held on a 700-acre farm in Manchester, Tennessee. Similar to Woodstock, Coachella and the late lamented Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo attracts a wide array of very high-profile acts, as well as cool up-and-coming artists playing everything from folk music, jam-band fare and indie-rock to blues, heavy metal and rap.

This year’s line-up is set to include big names such as Pearl Jam, Metallica, Kanye West and B.B. King, as well as hipster acts Vampire Weekend, MGMT and Cat Power.

Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant will be performing with Alison Kraus on Sunday.
On Thursday, the all-female Led Zeppelin tribute act, Lez Zeppelin will perform. Wonder if they’re nervous? Will Plant make a guest appearance? Could be interesting…

The concert and events run from June 12-15, the pricey tickets cost from $209.50 to $244.50 (plus service charges). Camping is optional and some additional fees apply.

By the time you spend money on food and travel, this whole thing is really expensive, so I’m not really sure who attends this event. It seems too expensive for kids. College students, maybe? Well, college students with their parents’ credit cards, haha.

This concert is massive, so for the full line-up visit the Bonnaroo website, here. The site also features a clock counting down the days, hours, minutes and seconds until the event begins, y’know, in case you’re crazy obsessive like that.

Can’t afford a ticket? Enjoy these free Bonnaroo downloads!

Free Pearl Jam dowload—Last Kiss

Free Metallica download—Enter Sandman

Free Led Zeppelin download—Black Dog

Tell us what you think!
Have you ever been to Bonnaroo?
What was the best or worst part about it? Will you go this year?

Girls Gone Wild for Music:Top Female Musicians

Published March 19th, 2008 by Karen

When it comes to wild rock star antics, it’s easy to think of Elvis shooting his television, the Kinks trashing their hotel rooms, or the Sex Pistols trashing, well, everything.

But there are some pretty wild ladies in the musical mix as well.
Today we’re taking a look at some of our favorite wild women of rock and pop music. Did we forget your favorite? Leave a comment and tell us who is on your list!

Wildest Women in Music

Courtney Love/Hole—“Jennifer’s Body”
Courtney Love is no stranger to controversy. The widow of Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain, Love was accused of taking heroin while pregnant with daughter Francis Bean Cobain, and conspiracy theorists even link her to Kurt’s death. Love was a stripper prior to becoming a rockstar with her band Hole. She has also worked as an actress, appearing in films about Hustler magnate Larry Flynt and punk icon Sid Vicious.

Wendy O. Williams
As the leader of the experimental punk rock band the Plasmatics, Williams was one of the wildest women in music. Routinely wielding chainsaws and engaging in sexual antics onstage (occasionally getting arrested as a result), the volatile singer’s life came to an equally unsettling end when she committed suicide in 1998.

Britney Spears (video)—“Oops!…I Did it Again”
She started her career as an angelic Mickey Mouse Club singer, but this popstar has hit hard times with a failed marriage and behavior so erratic she’s been hospitalized multiple times and now her estate has been put under the control of her father. Guess her song was true, she’s “not that innocent.” Sorry, couldn’t resist…

Amy Winehouse—“Rehab”
This Grammy-winning singer is off the hook, but her husband remains in jail for charges of tampering with justice. The famously troubled singer won fans with her brash attitude and songs about “not going to rehab,” but her wild behavior has made her a tabloid regular and a recent visitor to rehab.

L7—“Pretend We’re Dead”
Probably the biggest girl group to emerge from the grunge scene of the ‘90s, L7 was notorious for decidedly unlady-like onstage behavior. Read the sordid details of the group’s infamous gig at the Reading Festival here, if you’ve got a strong stomach.

Madonna—“Bad Girl” Sure, she tries too hard to be edgy and hip, but the Material Girl does know how to spark scandal ranging from controversial—some say blasphemous—music videos and stage routines to her infamous Sex book and Truth or Dare movie.
