FREE: New Fiery Furnaces Mp3, Free Pool Party Concert

Published August 7th, 2009 by Karen

ABOVE: Fiery Furnaces will burn through a free concert, this weekend in Brooklyn.

Jack White may be stealing all the headlines, but the sometimes White Stripes leader doesn’t have the market cornered on quirky rock duos.

Siblings Matthew and Eleanor Friedberger turn out collections of experimental indie music inspired by everything from psychedelic weirdness to dear ol’ grandma (2005’s Rehearsing My Choir). The band’s latest album, I’m Going Away, was just released in July, but the duo reportedly already has plans to re-record and re-release it, with each Friedberger reinterpreting the band pieces as solo numbers.

You can see ‘em play the songs together for free on the Brooklyn waterfront this weekend

Free Concert: Sunday, August 9 @ Williamsburg Waterfront
with: The Fiery Furnaces, Dark Meat, The Netherlands and Simian Mobile Disco (DJ set)

Plus, you can grab a free Fiery Furnaces mp3 to enjoy on the train ride over (below). Continue reading »

Above: Merge Records founders Superchunk with their Gen X-tastic 1997 video, “Watery Hands,” featuring David Cross, Janeane Garofalo, harlequin masks and atom bombs.

Hey, remember ’90s indie rock?

If you do, or, if you’re just in the mood for some old school indie-rock action, head over to South Street Seaport (map) tonight (Friday, July 17) ’round 6 p.m. and catch up with Merge Records founders/indie icons, Superchunk. Versus opens.

Merge Records is also hosting a massive music festival called XX Merge in celebration of the label’s 20th anniversary. The show will include several days filled with performances by the likes of Spoon, Superchunk and M.Ward (Zooey Deschanel’s partner in She & Him). There is also a new book about Continue reading »

Rock Star Shoots Mom. She Shoots Back. New Dead Weather Video, Tour Dates, Free Concert

Published July 15th, 2009 by Karen

ABOVE: Sort of like a more rockin’ Mr. & Mrs. Smith: Dead Weather “Treat Me Like Your Mother” video. The band plays a free show in NYC, Thursday 7/16 at noon at Jack White’s new Record Store (details). Get there early or you probably won’t get in.

Apparently, Jack White would shoot his mother.

Ok, that’s a stretch, but in his new band’s new video, “Treat Me Like Your Mother,” Dead Weather singer Alison Mosshart chides White for treating her like his mother, setting the stage for a non-stop, close-range machinegun battle which fills out the rest of the clip’s runtime, until the scruffy pair runs out of lyrics, bullets and, possibly, blood. Fans of True Romance-style shoot-’em-ups are Continue reading »

They Might Be Giants Free Concert in Brooklyn on Saturday

Published July 10th, 2009 by Karen

ABOVE: The greatest song ever written about Turkey: “Istanbul (Not Constantinople) by They Might Be Giants.”

This is shaping up to be a big year for the annual Celebrate Brooklyn Music and Arts Festival at Prospect Park. The fest offers a series of FREE concerts by some big name acts in Brooklyn’s beautiful Prospect Park.

Up Next is a performance by They Might Be Giants. The Brooklyn group gives a free show to the park on Saturday July 11. Expect to hear plenty of classics from the band behind that obnoxiously catchy Malcolm in the Middle themesong. Get there early to find a nice spot in the grass, then get ready to sing along with “Particle Man,” “Birdhouse in Your Soul,” “Don’t Let’s Start” and, of course, the greatest song ever written about Istanbul or Constantinople, “Istanbul (Not Constantinople).”

FREE CONCERT: Matt & Kim Bring (Naked) Indie Pop Fun to NYC

Published July 9th, 2009 by Karen

ABOVE: Matt & Kim streak through Times Square for “Lessons Learned.”

Brooklyn’s synth and drums indie-pop duo Matt & Kim raised eyebrows with their recent video for “Lessons Learned,” featuring a stripped-down run through Times Square.

While the popular duo will probably-hopefully-keep their clothes on this time, they will be bringing their usual cheerful dance-pop tracks to NYC for a free show Thursday July 9 at Continue reading »

Free Show, Free Mp3: Memphis Punk Hits People, Rocks Out. Tonight in NYC

Published July 1st, 2009 by Karen

ABOVE: Enjoy the catchy rock noise of Jay Reatard for free in NYC, but, ladies, be warned: If you touch Jay’s guitar, he will pick you up and throw you off of the stage. Welcome back, punk. We missed you.

Is there a better way to get warmed up for the 4th of July fireworks than with an explosive free show by Matador Records (Sonic Youth, Cat Power) wild man, Jay Reatard?

Goner Records ex-pat and ex-Lost Sounds leader Jay Lindsey, will tear through some  surprisingly poppy, retro-tinged Brit-punk-flavored tracks from his new Matador Records release, Watch Me Fall-and probably some old favorites, too-during tonight’s free show in NYC. The fun takes place at StuyTown’s  Stuyvesant Oval, which appears to be part of an, um, interesting looking housing complex in Manhattan (take the map, you’ll need it).

Show starts at 8pm, is open to all ages and, best of all, it’s free. Happy Wednesday.
