Free U2 Concert Celebrates Fall of Berlin Wall by Building New Wall

In honor of the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall, MTV has organized a massive, free concert by Irish pop-rock band U2 in front of the iconic Brandenburg Gate.

Strangely enough, the concert is being marred by the erection of a giant wall (reportedly a 12-foot-tall metal barrier) meant to keep viewers without tickets from seeing the show—the free show.

Celebrating the fall of the Berlin wall by building a wall?

Thanks, U2.

Free NYC: Travis Sullivan’s Bjorkestra

If you’re looking for a weird, cheap (free!) way to spend your Saturday night,  consider heading to BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music) and checking out the sure-to-be-strange stylings of Travis Sullivan’s Bjorkestra.

Billed as “visionary pop meets cutting-edge jazz” the eclectic troupe is basically a large-scale cover band that reinterprets the music of Icelandic icon Bjork, adding elements of improv, big band, jazz, electronics music and more to the already eclectic mix.

On record, it comes off a bit too indie elevator jazz for us at times, smoothing out all of Bjork’s crazy jagged edges, but maybe things spark into something wilder in a live setting.

Are you a Bjork fan? Check out the Bjorkestra’s sounds here (or watch the video below)and tell us what you think…

Doors open at 8pm, show starts at 9pm-best of all, it’s free.

French buzz band Phoenix is bringing its buoyant electro-pop to the Big Apple, er, um, the big Apple Store, anyway.

The group’s latest album, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix drew rave reviews in indie circles thanks to tracks like “Lisztomania” and  ”1901,” and the band even landed high-profile gigs on shows such as Saturday Night Live.

Phoenix’s big weekend shows at Central Park are sold out (sorry), but you still have a chance to catch them live in NYC this week.

For a time, it seemed as though you couldn’t toss a Red Bull can without hitting some hip new band with “wolf” in its name (Guitar Wolf, We are Wolves, AIDS Wolf, Wolfmother, Peanut Butter Wolf… Who’d we miss?).

Now, it looks like the new buzz word might be “teenage.”

Don’t believe us? Check out our list of 10 Shows to See This Weekend for proof.

Marc Ribot Live in NYC: Good Guitar, Bad Vibes

Published August 20th, 2009 by Karen
Great guitar tone...if he knew what to do with it.

Great guitar tone, horrendous lyrics: Marc Ribot @ City Winery, NYC.

It always seems tacky to complain about a gift, so we’re hesitant to say anything unkind about the free concert by guitarist/composer Marc Ribot Tuesday evening at the City Winery.

Hesitant, but not completely averse.

On the plus side, Continue reading »

FREE in NYC: Amazing Baby, Yeasayer Concert and mp3s

Published August 13th, 2009 by Karen

ABOVE: Yeasayer will hit the pier for a free show tonight in NYC.

It seems like most of the city’s free shows normally take place on the weekend, but you don’t have to wait until the work-week’s over to have some fun!

Brooklyn indie types Yeasayer and Amazing Baby are teaming up for a free show Thursday, August 13 at Pier 54/Hudson River Park (map). Door open at 6pm.

What’s better than a free outdoor concert in the summer?

It’s a rhetorical question, but the free outdoor movies at Movies with a View by the Brooklyn Bridge are pretty cool, too. (Or, if you’re feelin’ kinda retro, Blondie, Pat Benatar and the Donnas are playing a free show, too: details)
