FREE in NYC: Amazing Baby, Yeasayer Concert and mp3s

Published August 13th, 2009 by Karen

ABOVE: Yeasayer will hit the pier for a free show tonight in NYC.

It seems like most of the city’s free shows normally take place on the weekend, but you don’t have to wait until the work-week’s over to have some fun!

Brooklyn indie types Yeasayer and Amazing Baby are teaming up for a free show Thursday, August 13 at Pier 54/Hudson River Park (map). Door open at 6pm.

What’s better than a free outdoor concert in the summer?

It’s a rhetorical question, but the free outdoor movies at Movies with a View by the Brooklyn Bridge are pretty cool, too. (Or, if you’re feelin’ kinda retro, Blondie, Pat Benatar and the Donnas are playing a free show, too: details)

Free Show, Free Mp3: Memphis Punk Hits People, Rocks Out. Tonight in NYC

Published July 1st, 2009 by Karen

ABOVE: Enjoy the catchy rock noise of Jay Reatard for free in NYC, but, ladies, be warned: If you touch Jay’s guitar, he will pick you up and throw you off of the stage. Welcome back, punk. We missed you.

Is there a better way to get warmed up for the 4th of July fireworks than with an explosive free show by Matador Records (Sonic Youth, Cat Power) wild man, Jay Reatard?

Goner Records ex-pat and ex-Lost Sounds leader Jay Lindsey, will tear through some  surprisingly poppy, retro-tinged Brit-punk-flavored tracks from his new Matador Records release, Watch Me Fall-and probably some old favorites, too-during tonight’s free show in NYC. The fun takes place at StuyTown’s  Stuyvesant Oval, which appears to be part of an, um, interesting looking housing complex in Manhattan (take the map, you’ll need it).

Show starts at 8pm, is open to all ages and, best of all, it’s free. Happy Wednesday.

Free MP3: Zooey Deschanel Sings about Her Underwear on TV

Published June 25th, 2009 by Karen

ABOVE: Of all the songs written about, um, weeds, this may be the first about cotton.

Since first showing the world she could sing during her shower scene duet with Will Ferrell in Elf, Zooey Deschanel has stolen the hearts of moviegoers–and indie rock fans.

The burgeoning star paired up with singer/songwriter/guitarist M. Ward to form She & Him, and if that weren’t enough to secure her status as the indie-rock world’s darling, the blue-eyed, shaggy-banged singer recently became engaged to Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie (they sing together, too).

So, what else could she do?

Sing a song about her underpants, of course.(Rather her than Gibbard, we guess.)

While Deschanel fans might be disappointed to learn that Continue reading »

FREE MP3 The Fallen “Bury Me Alive” Ex-Evanescence, ex-Idol: New Album, Same Sound

Published June 22nd, 2009 by Karen

ABOVE: Carly Smithson, AKA, Carly Hennessy, stars in her own very embarrassing homemade infomercial full of horrible pop songs and shallow declarations like, “I always wanted to be famous…Every little girl wants to be a pop star.”

Following their split with singer Amy Lee, the ex-members of Evanescence have teamed up with controversial American Idol cast-off Carly Smithson to form a new band called the Fallen (the name is borrowed from Evanescence’s breakthrough album, Fallen).

In addition to sharing some of Lee’s striking physical traits (jet black hair and light blue eyes), Irish-born Smithson has some experience singing Lee’s songs: She routinely performed “Bring Me to Life” during her time on the American Idol: Idols Live tour.

One of the most controversial contestants to appear on the show in recent seasons, many outraged viewers called for Smithson to be expelled from the Idol competition after it was revealed that she had released a disastrous major label album in 2001 (the album, Ultimate High, was released under the name Carly Hennessy). Skeptical Evanescence fans might want to check out the horrible pop and silly video of Carly’s “I’m Gonna Blow Your Mind.”

Many viewers felt that the show should be a forum for new talent, not industry has-beens. Smithson was eventually eliminated due to low vote totals.

It remains to be seen whether Smithson will be able to win over a rock audience, but based on some of her musical past, it seems that she aspires to be Britney Spears, not Joan Jett.

Smithson and the Fallen are currently offering fans a sneak preview of their forthcoming album in the form of a free download of lead single, “Bury Me Alive.”

Hmm…the title reminds us of Evanescence’s hit “Bring Me to Life.” So far the band name and song title aren’t very original, guess we’ll have to check out the song and see if the music just sounds like an Evanescence cover band.

We’re pretty sure it will.

Mel Gibson’s Girlfriend Issues Free MP3, “Say My Name” by Oksana

Can Mel Gibson’s baby mama sing? That’s the question E! Online is asking as the woman who broke up the actor’s longtime marriage is issuing a single off her upcoming album for free.

According to E!, “Say My Name,” the first single from Oksana Grigorieva’s forthcoming debut album, Beautiful Heartache, is now available for free download-and, most likely, full blown Internet ridicule-at her official website.

“It is the first and one of the simplest songs on the album, but also one of the most intimate,” the 39-year-old singer told E!. The album will be released this summer on Icon Records, the label owned by, surprise, surprise, Gibson.  E! reports that “Say My Name” was also written for an upcoming movie that, while unnamed, sounds a lot like the Mel Gibson-starring Edge of Darkness.

“It is naked, intimate, raw emotion,” Grigorieva said of the track. “Little more than piano and voice, as if it is a cry from the soul.”

So, how bad is it? Take a listen below, then tell us what you think!

Free mp3: Jarvis Cocker’s Latest is More Elvis, Less Blur

Further Complications

Free MP3: Jarvis Cocker—“Angela

As the leader of Pulp, Jarvis Cocker rose to the top of the Brit-pop heap after battling Blur and Oasis through the ’90s British invasion redux. In recent years, Pulp has been put on the shelf and the lanky singer with the acid tongue has ventured out on his own.

On the lead track from his latest album Further Complications,  Cocker’s eponymous ode to Angela (”She’s nearly 23/ making $4.15 an hour”) has less in common with Pulp’s ’90s Brit-pop showdown and more to do with the fuzzy pub-rock of a hungry young Elvis Costello. It’s not as cringe-inducingly clever as the Pulp classic “Common People,” but what is? Continue reading »

Free Mp3: Meat Puppets New Album, 2009 Tour Dates

Published May 11th, 2009 by Karen

Above: Don’t hold this ’90s pop and creepy clown against ‘em, the new Meat Puppets LP is much better.

It is easy to get caught in a trap of trying to one-up your friends by touting the newest band on your iPod, but sometimes it’s nice to take a breath and see what your old favorites are up to.

Today, we’re happy to announce that the Meat Puppets are back on the scene and reportedly rockin’ the stage harder than ever (a fact we hope to confirm for ourselves at one of the band’s upcoming shows).

Together for nearly 30 years (with a few scattered break-ups in between), you may know these psychedelic country trailblazers as the band behind influential albums such as 1980’s Meat Puppets (SST), or you may recognize the band as one of Kurt Cobain’s favorites (Nirvana famously covered “Lake of Fire” during its Unplugged performance).

Or, perhaps you remember the band’s ill-fated stint in the majors and semi-hit grunge songs like “Backwater.”

In any case, the group is worth remembering.

The band is back with a new LP, Sewn Together, a solid, energetic disc that blends melody and experimentation, country twang and rock noise, happily skipping ’90s gloss in favor of vintage grit, thereby restoking the musical fire of the band, and hopefully its fans, in the process.

We like what we’ve heard so far, check out the “Rotten Shame” mp3 and see what the buzz is all about.

Free Mp3 Download and 2009 Meat Puppets Tour Dates, after the jump. Continue reading »
