Pearl Jam recently arranged an online scavenger hunt in which fans collected pieces of album cover artwork and redeemed them for a free Pearl Jam song.

UK rockers Muse took a more extreme approach by orchestrating a real-world scavenger hunt populated with rogue agents, resistance and decoys providing clues related to the band’s new album, The Resistance. (There was also some complicated storyline about revolutions or something…but that’s not really the point…)

Our point is that, scavenger hunts aside, Muse is now revealing its latest project to the world by allowing fans to preview The Resistance for free online.

However, for fans who actually want to buy The Resistance, the price is fairly high.

On the band’s website, U.S. fans can order several different version of the album, starting at $18.98 (+s&h) for the basic CD, and going all the way to $99.99 (+s&h) for the deluxe edition featuring:

  • CD + DVD in foldout softpak
  • The Making Of The Resistance DVD
  • 180g double heavyweight vinyl
  • Muse USB pre-loaded with WAV, Apple Lossless and MP3 320 files plus bespoke audio player
  • 12″ Art Print
  • Exclusive 5.1 surround sound Audio DVD.
  • Hmm…$99.99 seems like a lot of dough for 4 different version of the same album, don’t you think?
And, let’s face it, you’re probably just going to throw it on your iPod anyway–so why not just get the cheap-o digital download version?

So, what do Muse fans think of the group’s latest effort?
Preview the Resistance and tell us what you think!

Twilight New Moon Soundtrack Sucks In Radiohead, Muse, Band of Skulls mp3

Published July 29th, 2009 by Karen

ABOVE: The Twilight New Moon trailer.

It looks like some big changes are going to hit the cast of Twilight: Eclipse, just before the third installment starts filming (Rachelle Lefevre, the actress portraying villainess, Victoria, is reportedly out).

One thing at a time though! The second film in the series, Twilight: New Moon, isn’t even in theatres yet–so it’s really too soon to start speculating about Twilight Eclipse or the Twilight Eclipse soundtrack.

(BTW: Is it just us, or does “Twilight: Eclipse” sound like a flavor of minty-fresh chewing gum, or some gross energy drink? Maybe it should be garlic-flavored, y’know, to keep vampires away…)

At least the Twilight New Moon soundtrack is slowly starting shape up.

Artists currently confirmed to join the soundtrack include Continue reading »

ABOVE: Dead Weather performs “Hang You From the Heavens,” the debut single from the band’s debut, Horehound.

Following a handful of well-received live shows and TV appearances, the Dead Weather is preparing to release its debut album, Horehound, an event that is being celebrated at Jack White’s pop-up record store in NYC.

If you can’t wait until tomorrow to hear it, the band is streaming the whole album online so fans can listen to Horehound in its entirety for FREE prior to its July 13 release (it’s on Facebook, because, apparently Jack White Hates Myspace even more, for some reason…).

ABOVE: The store is overpriced, but the music is free: Urban Outfitters offers up free music by dozens of up-and-coming artists, including White Rabbits.

Ok, anyone who has been to an Urban Outfitters store knows that even though there are some cool knick-knacks and stuff there sometimes (build your own drummer, cheeseburger phone), it is typically a mecca of overpriced t-shirts and coffee table books about graffiti and weed.

However, we want to give the store credit for passing along a ton of music, for free.

UO is currently offering up a library of free music, and you can stream playlists or download the whole collection (check out the complete tracklist info below).

So far, there are five massive volumes of the collection, including tracks by King Khan & the Shrines, the Walkmen, White Rabbits, Grizzly Bear, Crystal Stilts and dozens of other indie buzz bands and up-and-comers.

Jack White Opens NYC Record Store, For Two Days Only.

Published July 9th, 2009 by Karen

ABOVE: Take a tour of a record manufacturing plant with the Dead Weather’s video, “Will There Be Enough Water?

He doesn’t seem to have time for the White Stripes or Raconteurs lately, but garage-rock mainstay Jack White is making a big play to promote his newest band, the Dead Weather.

Just last week, White launched The Vault, a subscription based service offering listeners access to exclusive music from his Third Man record label, home to artists such as The White Stripes, The Raconteurs and The Dead Weather.

Next week, White is opening a record store in NYC-that will only exist for two days (location, hours below).

We know this is a tough market for a record store, but isn’t this excessive?

Actually, it’s a clever marketing ploy by this independent rocker who has often decried the internet age for leaking music too soon. Continue reading »
