Free Shows NYC: Jandek is Still Mysterious After 50 Albums

How many bands can you think of that have released 10 or 15 albums? Probably not very many. Guided by Voices/Robert Pollard? Bob Dylan? Phish’s endless bootleg catolog notwithstanding,  Jandek may be the most prolific musician around.

A reclusive musician from Houston, TX, Jandek has released more than 50 (!) albums since 1978, all while remaining virtually invisible to his fans. His album covers featured photos of a man growing older through the years, but it was decades before fans were certain that the guy in the photos was actually Jandek, because he didn’t appear in public or play a concert until 2004.

Despite, or perhaps because of, this overwhelming mystery, Jandek managed to earn a dedicated fanbase, particularly among musicians (Sonic Youth, Death Cab for Cutie, et al) and fans of other  ”outsider” musicicans such as Roky Erickson and Daniel Johnston.

A slightly wider group of listeners became aware of the unique performer following the release of the 2004 documentary, Jandek on Corwood. (Very spooky trailer, after the jump)

Eager fans and curious newcomers are in for a treat, as Jandek hits the stage in NYC for a rare concert Thursday April 23 at NYU’s Eisner Lubin Auditorium. Best of all–it’s FREE! Continue reading »

Record Store Day 2009 Events, Free Shows: Other Music NYC, Goner Records & more!

Published April 17th, 2009 by Karen

Saturday April 18, 2009 is the second edition of Record Store Day, an event meant to celebrate the happily codependent relationship between music fans and record shops (the few that are left, that is).

Basically, it’s an excuse for a weekend full of free shows, record store sales and general rock’n'roll fun.

To help attract shoppers and fans, most stores will be stocking VERY Limited Edition music and 7″s from Flaming Lips, Black Kids, Pavement, Dandy Warhols and dozens more (complete list ).

We’ve got the scoop on some of the big events for the weekend, from free bagels, booze and music from Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Grizzly Bear (DJ sets) and Bill Callahan (live) at NYC’s Other Music to an in-store with the Breeders at Shake It Records in Cincinnati, OH.

More Record Store Day events highlights, videos and more, after the jump.

What’s your favorite music store?
Leave a comment and tell us about it-we’re ready to shop!
