The daughter of singing star Lionel Richie, Nicole Richie, 27, rose to fame thanks to her high-profile position as the (ex) best friend of Paris Hilton. Richie was once engaged to DJ AM, the celebrity DJ found dead of an apparent drug overdose in August, a year after miraculously surviving a plane crash that killed four others.

In 2008 Richie welcomed her first, daughter Harlow Winter Kate, with boyfriend Joel Madden, 30, lead singer of the pop-punk band Good Charlotte (video below). Hilton briefly dated Madden’s twin brother, Benji.

On the celebrated date 09/09/09 the couple welcomed a second child with a bird-inspired name. It’s a boy, but the couple named the new baby Continue reading »

Reunion Alert: Iggy and the Stooges Reunion Concerts

It had previously been announced that Iggy Pop and the Stooges would be performing at the May 2 and 3 editions of All Tomorrow’s Parties in London, one of ATP’s 10th Anniversary events.

In a new twist, the band has decided to perform the seminal album Raw Power in its entirety–with members of the original Stooges line-up.

Obviously, guitarist Ron Asheton passed away last year, rendering a proper reunion impossible. However, on 1973’s Raw Power, Asheton temporarily switched to bass while James Williamson took over guitar duties. Pop has asked Williamson to re-join the band for ATP-something he hasn’t done since 1974.

Fueled by addiction and in-fighting, the Stooges broke up following the release of 1970’s Funhouse, reformed to record Raw Power, and ultimately folded again in 1974.

Pop’s most recent album, 2009’s Preliminaires, is jazz-influenced concept album inspired by Michel Houellebecq’s novel “La Possibilité d’une île.” Uh-huh. In 2003 the punk icon took a detour into pop-punk, recording Skull Ring: a collection of songs featuring collaborations with the likes of Green Day and Sum 41 (featuring Avril Lavigne’s husband).

The Stooges are always full of surprises, but the one thing we can guarantee: sinewy Iggy Pop will be frighteningly muscular and shirtless (shudder).

Rock’n'roll.

If anyone else out there is bored stiff by all of the overly-sweet and spineless indie sounds sweeping the nation’s earbuds (Passion Pit? Vampire Weekend? Bat for Lashes? Pains of Being Pure at Heart? snore), then this blast of rock’n'roll noise will be a pleasant reminder that the sleepy cardigan rockers of the world haven’t won, yet.

If you don’t have merrily ringing ears and slightly scuffed dancing shoes after San Francisco noisemaker Ty Segall’s new disc, Lemons, finishes spinning, you must’ve done something wrong. Turn it up and try again.

Making the deal a little sweeter, Segall’s new disc is Continue reading »

Green Day, Pink Performing at 2009 VMAs

ABOVE: When they were younger: Green Day’s VMA debut in 1994.

Green Day and Pink have both been added to this year’s slate of performers at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, to be held September 13 in New York, according to a RollingStone.com report.

Green Day’s live performance will mark the third time they hit the VMAs stage: They played Insomniac’s “Armatage Shanks” in their VMAs debut back in 1994, and followed that up over a decade later with American Idiot’s “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” in 2005, with “Boulevard” also taking home that year’s Video of the Year Award.

“We are excited to be performing at the Video Music Awards,” Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong said in a statement. “You never know what’s going to happen, and it’s always a memorable experience for us.” Said Pink, “Last year I got to jump out of a window at the VMAs in L.A., this year I can’t wait to blow the roof off Radio City in New York.”

The VMAs are returning to the Big Apple after calling Los Angeles and Las Vegas home for the past two years.

Tonight, New York music fans have zillions of choices of bands and events to attend, but two of the biggest bills in town are probably Green Day (Madison Square Garden) and Katy Perry (Hammerstein Ballroom).

The two shows actually have more in common than you might expect. Continue reading »

Judge: Woman Owes $1.92 Million for 24 Downloads-Green Day, Journey, More

In what may be the most unfathomable sentence ever handed down in a case of this type, a federal court ruled that Jammie Thomas-Rasset violated copyright laws and damaged the recording industry by illegally file-sharing 24 songs.

In the case brought against her by the Recording Industry Association of America, the 32-year-old Minnesota woman is sentenced to pay $80,000 for each of the 24 songs ($1,920,000 total). She had previously been sentenced to a payment of $222,000, AP reports.

Believe it or not, things could’ve been worse: the jury was legally allowed to fine as much as $150,000 per song.

We can’t help wondering what songs the court thinks are worth $80,000 apiece.

AP reports that Green Day, Gloria Estefan, Sheryl Crow and Journey were among the artists whose songs were being illegally distributed by Thomas-Rasset.

No word on whether any of those artists were involved in the case, or aware of the RIAA’s actions on their behalf.

Do you think over-the-top fines like this will deter people from illegally downloading music from the internet?

2009 Green Day Tour Dates, Tickets: US, Canada, Europe

Tickets for Green Day’s tour in support of 21st Century Breakdown are being sold by ticket monster, er, Ticketmaster. If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em, we guess.

To Green Day’s credit, in many cities, the band is taking admirable steps to ensure that scalpers aren’t keeping fans out of the shows, by limiting tickets to two per person and making them non-transferable (to prevent re-sale).

We didn’t entirely dig Green Day’s latest (see if you agree with our 21st Century Breakdown review), but we’re sure fans are eager to find out if these rock superstars are heading to their towns any time soon, so we rounded up all of the band’s upcoming tour dates, just for you.

After the jump: The classic song we think Green Day swiped the melody from.

With rumors of the genre’s demise long fueled by accusations of selling out and growing up, “punk’s not dead” has been a rallying cry since punk’s earliest days.

While we don’t want to examine and debate the vital signs of this no longer vital genre, we are curious as to what the word punk means in an era when people spend more time playing Guitar Hero than garage rock.

Does punk exist anymore? Is it just a brand name, like Pepsi or Starbucks? Does it even matter anymore? Probably not…

Met with widespread acclaim, and localized disgust, Green Day’s new album 21st Century Breakdown, featuring the single “21 Guns,” is Continue reading »

Green Day Blasts Wal-Mart

Green Day may have the best-selling CD in the country, but you won’t be able to find it on the shelves of your local Wal-Mart, according to an AP report.

The report notes that the giant superstore declined to stock the band’s latest CD, “21st Century Breakdown,” because Green Day refused to edit the album for language and content. The album contains some curse words and other adult content, according to the AP.

“Wal-Mart’s become the biggest retail outlet in the country, but they won’t carry our record because they wanted us to censor it,” Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong was quoted as saying.

While the retail chain carries CDs from the likes of raunchy acts like Eminem, the objectionable content is edited out before it hits the shelves and a “clean” version is sold. But in Armstrong’s view, “There’s nothing dirty about our record.” Armstrong added: “They want artists to censor their records in order to be carried in there,” he said. “We just said no. We’ve never done it before. You feel like you’re in 1953 or something.”
