2009 Slayer Tour Dates Canceled for Araya’s Health

Published November 5th, 2009 by Karen

Nothing says "rock" like an afternoon at the mall with Slayer...

Slayer’s massive tour in support of its new album has been canceled after singer/bassist Tom Araya announced plans to undergo immediate surgery, reports Spin.com (Tour Dates, below)

(Read: Marilyn Manson, Slayer 2009 Tour Dates Sponsored by Energy Drinks, Satan)

The band’s myspace page states that, “Slayer’s Tom Araya is currently under the care of a specialist for a back injury, thought to be related to his on-stage activity, and the physician has ordered an immediate surgical procedure to take place Tuesday [Nov.3].”

Related to his on-stage activity? Hmm…so your parents were right: head-banging really is bad for your health. Go figure.

However, for 20-year-old Morgan Dana Harrington the evening took an expected turn. The Virginia Tech student reportedly Continue reading »

Lou Reed 2009 Tour Dates + Win Free NYC Concert Tickets!

Yesterday we posted a free Sonic Youth mp3 from the new album, The Eternal (which is better than we expected. Actually, it kinda rocks!). For some reason, writing about this longstanding New York band made us think of another NYC institution, the Velvet Underground.

Of course, the Velvets aren’t around anymore, but leader Lou Reed is hitting the concert stage twice in NYC this week for a pair of rather unusual shows.

The NYC shows (4/23 and 4/24) will consist of improvised music that Lou’s website calls, “A Night of Deep Noise,” featuring the Metal Machine Trio: Lou on guitar/electronics along with Ulrich Krieger on tenor sax/electronics and Sarth Calhoun on live processing/fingerboard continuum. NO SONGS. NO VOCALS.”

Does anybody else get the feeling Reed’s trying to scare fans away?

We’re not saying he has to open and close with “Sweet Jane” and “Heroin,” but the all-caps warning  seems a little snobby, no? And we’re pretty sure that anyone who claims to love Reed’s largely dismissed/loathed1975 experimental noise album, Metal Machine Music might be lying. (For his part, Reed claims he invented and exhausted heavy metal with the disc. Modest, as always.)

Anyway, if you’re still interested, Continue reading »

Inglourious Basterds’ Quentin Tarantino on American Idol

Published April 15th, 2009 by Karen

Hey, remember when Quentin Tarantino used to make halfway decent movies?

Yeah, maybe not. It has been a while…
(We’re still not entirely sold on Death Proof, and his new flick, Inglourious Basterds, features Brad Pitt. Meh.)

Anyway, this noted pop culture junkie has clawed his way back into viewers’ lives-as a guest on American Idol. The theme of the show’s performances was, fittingly enough, songs from movies. As expected, Tarantino’s hyperactive ranting was far more amusing that the night’s performances. Maybe he should replace all four judges?

The most disappointing part of the night was that none of the Top 7 performed songs featured in From Justin to Kelly, the notoriously horrible movie musical inspired by the winner (and loser) from season one (see the trailer, above).

Or, it would’ve been awesome to see the man behind Reservoir Dogs (and some great soundtracks) take to the stage and sing “Stuck in the Middle with You” as a group number with the Idol kids, but no luck. (We were gonna post the musical scene from Reservoir Dogs, but it’s a little too violent for this time of the morning, you can see it here.)

In case you ran screaming away from the TV as soon as Adam Lambert announced that his version of “Born to be Wild” would include “some electronic elements,” we’ve got the cheat sheet for the complete American Idol Movie Night playlist. Continue reading »

Unusual Outside Lands Line-up: Pearl Jam, Black Eyed Peas, Mastodon and Tom Jones

Published April 13th, 2009 by Karen

(WARNING: If you watch this video, you WILL get this song stuck in your head. But it’s fun.)

It seems as though there is a new festival announced every day, and this is no exception. The line-up has just been announced for the second edition of the Outside Lands Festival. The festival takes place August 28-30 at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco.

Over 50 performers have been confirmed for the show, but at a glance the line-up sort of looks like an iPod stuck on shuffle-we certainly never expected to see the Black Eyed Peas share a stage with heavy metal monsters Mastodon, or to have enduring grunge band Pearl Jam rock out alongside 68-year-old “It’s Not Unusual” singer Tom Jones, but here it is!

Yeah, we know it’s only April, but pre-sale tickets are up for grabs starting on Wednesday (April 15) and, with a line-up like this, it’s sure to sell-out quickly. The show marks headliner Pearl Jam’s first stateside concert in over a year.

Tickets range from $199-$595 (don’t worry, layaway is available). Complete festival details (including info on tickets, layaway and parking passes) are available on the SF Outside Lands festival website.

The full line-up includes Beastie Boys, Black Eyed Peas, Dirtbombs, Band of Horses, TV on the Radio, Dead Weather, M.I.A., Incubus, Heartless Bastards, M.I.A., Jason Mraz, Deerhunter, Ween, Continue reading »

Anvil: Heavy Metal vs Hannah Montana in Theaters

Published April 13th, 2009 by Karen

This weekend at movie theaters, music fans had two choices:

Hannah Montana: The Movie and its fictional story of a wealthy teenage popstar struggling to balance super-stardom and her private life, or

Anvil! The Story of Anvil, the true story of a group of 50-year-old men struggling in obscurity to succeed as a heavy metal band while working day-jobs in order to survive.

It’s disappointing, but not surprising, that Miley Cyrus’s Disney flick dominated the box office. However, the fact that underdog rock band Anvil is finally getting attention after all of these years is a victory nonetheless.

A bittersweet documentary, early reviews have painted Anvil! The Story of Anvil as something of a real-life version of This is Spinal Tap, Continue reading »

We Dare You Not to Laugh: Boston Cop Urinates on Metallica Fan at Concert.

Published March 30th, 2009 by Karen

Yeah, we know it’s probably wrong to laugh at this story, but, y’know, sometimes something just makes you laugh, even though you know you shouldn’t (like when you see your pal get hit in the junk with a football or something). Or, sometimes, if you don’t drink enough coffee for breakfast on Monday morning, dumb stuff seems  unusually funny. Either way, here we are.

Today, while we were roaming around the internet (um, we mean, working), we started looking for tour dates and ended up on the Rolling Stone page. Meh.

Anyway, while there we noticed RS had posted possibly the most awesome headline ever:

(Drumroll, please…)

Ex-Cop Charged for Urinating on Metallica Fan at Boston Concert

Maybe we’re wrong, but we’re pretty sure that the only thing that could’ve made this funnier would’ve been if the cop had actually taken a wiz on James Hetfield-a scenario that might’ve gone something like this: Continue reading »

Do Major Label Bands Belong at SXSW? Metallica vs Indie Rock

Published March 23rd, 2009 by Karen

This weekend, the 22nd year of the South by Southwest music festival wrapped up in Austin, TX. While the event has long been a place to see up-and-coming bands, it has increasingly become a place where big name bands show up to show off at  ”secret shows.”

But, does having a huge band show up at this fest add to the fun, or just steal the spotlight from a new group who should’ve had a chance to shine?

Thrashy ’80s metal relics Metallica showed up at the formerly indie-minded music event over the weekend, for a “secret” show at Stubb’s, a concert venue that holds about 2,000 people-a far cry from the stadiums and arenas the band normally plays.

The major label metal and anti-music-sharing attitude of Metallica is the antithesis of indie rock in every way possible (although, nostalgia, irony and the band’s increasingly emo lyrics might endear them to some of the kids).

Do big bands like Metallica belong at SXSW at all? Continue reading »
