Over the weekend, Brooklyn musicians were left in disbelief by news of the death of one of the scene’s most well-regarded members, Gerhardt “Jerry” Fuchs.

The New York Times reports, and postings by friends and bandmates confirm, that the 34-year-old drummer fell to his death on Sunday while attempting to Continue reading »

During the five days that the massive CMJ music and film festival takes over venues around NYC, one of the hardest things is plotting your schedule so that you don’t miss something you really wanted to see.

Thankfully, in one of the site’s better innovations in recent years, CMJ now offers a way to plan and share your CMJ schedule online.

Of course, it’s still up to you to decide whether to check out A Band Named Ashes, UUVVWWZ or any of the hundreds of bands in between (you could even be very specific and only see bands from, say, Nashville) but at least keeping track of your must-sees will be a little easier.

Fun fact: Superdrag and Type O Negative are still around and playing CMJ. Who knew?

Which bands are on your ‘must-see’ list for this year’s CMJ?

CMJ 2009 runs 10/20-10/24.

Indie Rock Homes in Brooklyn. Do Pop Stars Get Paid Too Much?

If you want to see the extravagant Hollywood homes of lip-syching superstars, pop tarts and rappers, you can check out MTV’s Cribs or any number of other glamorous TV shows and fashion magazines.

(POLL: Is it unfair that pop singers make more money than real bands?)

If you want to see the Brooklyn home of an actual musician who has made a name for himself writing solid songs and touring almost non-stop, you can check out the recent feature Continue reading »

So, writing about music means that we end up on many bands’ mailing lists. Periodically, we clean out the spam folder and take a look at what these bands are up to.

However, after opening today’s email from Arizona rock staples the Supersuckers, we’re not sure we want to open our email anymore, ever. We would’ve almost preferred a computer-eating super virus instead of thisContinue reading »

French buzz band Phoenix is bringing its buoyant electro-pop to the Big Apple, er, um, the big Apple Store, anyway.

The group’s latest album, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix drew rave reviews in indie circles thanks to tracks like “Lisztomania” and  ”1901,” and the band even landed high-profile gigs on shows such as Saturday Night Live.

Phoenix’s big weekend shows at Central Park are sold out (sorry), but you still have a chance to catch them live in NYC this week.

Tonight (9/24) band is setting up for a free concert at the Apple Store located in SoHo (map). Show starts at 8:30pm, but Continue reading »

REVIEW: Twilight New Moon Soundtrack as Overrated as the Movie?

Published September 23rd, 2009 by Karen

Twilight: New Moon (Soundtrack)

Various Artists

2009

MusicVixen Rating:

Recommended if you like:
Death Cab for Cutie, Gossip Girl, bummed out vampires, stoned looking girls

The success of the pre-release buzz, incessant marketing and unfounded hype surrounding this utterly mediocre collection might be an even bigger accomplishment than the crossbreeding of vampires, werewolves and indie-rockers…or whatever this movie is about.

The release of Twilight: New Moon and its accompanying soundtrack are still a few weeks away, but the tracklisting has finally been released (see it, below).

Today, we’re taking at look at the disc and trying to figure out what the fuss is all about.

At a glance, it seems about as lame as the movie (seriously, have you seen the trailer for this thing? Bad acting, horrible dialogue and cheap special effects. Unless people dig this because it’s cheesy/funny, there’s really no excuse for handing any more money over to Stephenie Meyer and Co.).

Many Twilight fans would be shocked to learn that one of the film’s vampires or werewolves got hitched over the weekend-but don’t get too brokenhearted just yet.

Over the weekend indie film fave actress/singer Zooey Deschanel reportedly tied the knot with Twilight: New Moon Continue reading »

Music geeks everywhere were delighted today as Matador Records sent out a message via Twitter, “confirming the worst kept secret of all time; the return of Pavement.”

A decade after calling it quits, the ’90s indie rockers will be back in their lo-fi, slightly greyer glory, starting with a concert date Sept. 21, 2010 at Rumsey Playfield in Central Park.

UPDATE: After the initial date sold out instantly, Matador Records announced that Pavement would add a second show Sept. 22, 2010, also at Rumsey Playfield. Oh, and 3rd. And now a 4th show, same venue.

Yeah, you read that right: The show is a year away.

However, tickets for the show go on sale tomorrow. (complete ticket info, below)

But, don’t call it a comeback, Matador notes that fans should, “be advised this tour is not Continue reading »

Daily Music Quiz: Roger Daltry and Jack Kerouac’s Brother

Today’s music trivia challenge comes courtesy of a band whose two guitarist share a September 10 birthday.

This California rock/alt-country group’s 1996 hit was sort of a bitter, update of the Who’s 1965 anthem, “My Generation”. The band also scored hits with songs about headless movie starlets and junkie cosmonauts (although our favorite is the one about Jack Kerouac’s brother).

Can you name the band?

BONUS: Can you name the band’s two guitarists celebrating birthdays today?

HINT: This band’s lead singer/guitarist was previously the star of a popular ’80s indie-rock band. That band was recently reformed, and this busy musician now records and tours with both successful groups.

BIG Hint: The band’s 1992 debut album features the song “Happy Birthday to Me.”

Answer and Video Below: Continue reading »
