Spiderman Joins Jonas Brothers: Disney Buys Marvel.

Tobey Maguire’s emo-boy portrayal of Peter Parker may have made Spider-Man into one of the comic book world’s wussiest superheroes, but news that the franchise is now owned by Disney is disappointing nonetheless.

(Of course, news of U2’s impending Spider-Man Broadway musical hasn’t helped Spidey’s image, either.)

Mickey Mouse and Co. are attempting to attract a wider male audience to the Disney fold by buying Marvel Entertainment Inc. Among the company’s 5,000+ characters are Spiderman, Iron Man, X Men and the Fantastic Four.

The multi-billion dollar deal was announced on Monday. It remains to be seen whether  any character’s secret identity will be revealed to be Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus, or whether the Jonas Brothers are about to develop superpowers other than the ability to hypnotize young girls with their squeaky-voiced pop songs.

What is the scariest Disney-Marvel superhero you can imagine? Spider-Jonas? Wolverine-Montana? Tell us!

Spoiler: 2009 Teen Choice Awards Winners, Losers, Videos

Published August 10th, 2009 by Karen

ABOVE: Newly-single Joe Jonas dances to Beyonce’s “Single Ladies,” while wearing some sort of unitard. Yes, it’s ok to laugh. The Jonas Brothers host the 2009 Teen Choice Awards tonight on Fox.

So, the 2009 Teen Choice Awards were handed out Sunday night, but the TV broadcast of the ceremony doesn’t air until tonight (Monday).

Basically, this means that by the time the show airs, everyone will already know who won/lost. So, if you memorize the winners now, you can amaze your friends with your psychic ability to predict winners during the show. Or not.

Doesn’t this sort of ruin some of the surprise?

Maybe the awards part of the show isn’t as important as the performances?

Anyway, if you’re too impatient to wait for the broadcast this evening, we’ve got the scoop on who took home the night’s big prizes Continue reading »

Recession Sends Big Concerts Under $10: U2, Jonas Brothers

Published August 1st, 2009 by Wendy

ABOVE: U2 with big hair in the ’80s. Just one of the bands being hit by the recession.

If there’s any silver lining to the current recession it’s on the musical front, where last-minute tickets to hear big acts like Coldplay and Bruce Springsteen are available for as little as $1, according to a Reuters report.

According to the report, eBay Inc’s StubHub, the leading Internet ticket re-seller, has confirmed that last-minute concert ticket sales at sharply lower prices are on the rise for acts like Paul McCartney, Springsteen, Jonas Brothers, Coldplay, and U2.

“People often assume a secondary ticket site only offers inflated prices, but it’s very challenging right now,” Sean Pate, a spokesman for San Francisco-based StubHub, was quoted as saying. He said cheap prices were not showing up just for “nosebleed” seats or lawn seats, but rather in all seat locations for top performers.

Many of the big tours are reportedly sold out through vendors like Live Nation, but a certain percentage of tickets find their way onto the secondary market on sites like StubHub or craigslist.org. Given the economy, many of these tickets are being sold by a combination of ticket brokers and regular fans at steep discounts

ABOVE: Joe Jonas and ex-girlfriend Camilla Belle met on the set of the” video for the band’s (pretty horrible) single, “Lovebug.

The last time we mentioned the Jonas Brothers on these pages, it was to announce the news of oldest brother Kevin Jonas’s engagement. We thought the band’s fans would be bummed, but, let’s face it, Kevin’s kinda the least popular of the trio.

However, cover your ears to prepare for the screams of the nation’s tween and teen girls upon learning that Joe Jonas is single again. The 19-year-old Disney star/singer has parted ways with his girlfriend, 22-year-old actress Continue reading »

The eldest Jonas brother, Kevin, and his girlfriend Danielle Deleasa were engaged Wednesday, according to an Associated Press report. The news service reported that the engagement was confirmed by a Jonas’ spokesperson.

The 21-year-old Jonas is part of the hot pop/rock trio the Jonas Brothers, along with siblings Joe and Nick Jonas. In a statement, Kevin’s parents, Kevin Sr. and Denise Jonas, said they were “filled with joy.”

The young couple has not yet set a date. Their engagement was first reported by People magazine. People quoted Kevin Jonas as describing his girlfriend’s reaction as “yes, yes, yes like 500 times super fast in a row.”

Jonas met Deleasa, 22, in May of 2007 while vacationing with their families in the Bahamas. A former hairdresser, Deleasa didn’t even know who Jonas was at the time, according to People magazine.

It’s Official: Screaming teenage girls around the world have one less Jonas brother to chase after, because one of the boys has just become engaged. Given the boys’ very public vows to remain virgins until they’re married, this may be the first celebrity wedding that doesn’t inspire pregnancy rumors before the big day.

The oldest member of the Jonas trio, Kevin, 21, proposed to his 22-year-old girlfriend, Danielle, Wednesday morning at her New Jersey home. Jonas had just played a concert in Canada, and flew in just to pop the question.

For his part, Kevin has seemingly been the most low-key of the brothers, failing to make headlines and attain teen heartthrob status the way younger brothers/celebrity-daters Nick and Joe normally do.

The engagement was officially announced by Jonas’s parents, Kevin Sr. and Denise, via a blog post on the band’s official website. There is also a photo of the newly-engaged couple.

The Jonas Brothers’ latest album, Lines, Vines and Trying Times, was released in June.

Nick Jonas spent yesterday lobbying Washington D.C. big shots on the need for diabetes research, even stopping for a photo op with President Barack Obama, according to an Associated Press report.

The arrival of the youngest Jonas sent Capitol Hill interns scurrying for their cameras, according to the AP. “I know some people can become star-struck and lose sight of what they’re here for, but if Nick Jonas makes juvenile diabetes a cause that people are more aware of, it’s worth it,” said Ashley Woolos, an American University student and intern in the office of Rep. Richard Neal, D-Mass.

Jonas, 16, is scheduled to testify before two Senate committees today on federal funding for diabetes research. Other witnesses include boxer Sugar Ray Leonard and actress Mary Tyler Moore.

Nick Jonas publicly revealed that he has Type 1 diabetes while performing at a Diabetes Research Institute fundraiser in 2007. The Jonas Brothers released their fourth CD, Lines, Vines and Trying Times, last week.

Mexico Cancels Concerts in Response to Swine Flu Outbreak

With Ticketmaster cancelling the sale of tickets for dozens of concerts, the swine flu outbreak is affecting entertainment in Mexico in a big way, according to a Reuters report.

According to the report, in order to help contain the outbreak of the disease, the Mexican government has banned public events in Mexico City, issued advisories against gatherings in other parts of the country and closed schools nationwide. As a result, music promoters and managers have been forced to hustle to postpone shows until after May 6, when schools are scheduled to reopen.

Alejandro Fernandez, Marco Antonio Solis, Los Lobos and Alejandra Guzman are just some of the artists that have been impacted by the cancellations of cultural festivals and concert events. The Jonas Brothers and Metallica are still scheduled to perform sold-out shows in Monterrey and Mexico City, respectively, in the next several weeks.

Behind the swift reaction by the live entertainment industry is the fact that more deaths from the swine flu have been reported in Mexico than any other country.
