Katy Perry Unplugged—Most Unnecessary Album Ever?

Published November 10th, 2009 by Karen

There was a time, when MTV’s series of Unplugged concerts and albums offered a unique look at bands and songwriters by taking them out of their comfort zones and stripping loud bands down to their barest elements (think of appearances by Nirvana, Alice in Chains and even Eric Clapton, for example).

However, in recent years, it seems that every two-bit pop-tart with a hit song gets this once reverential treatment, case in point: Katy Perry.

Having burst onto the pop scene in 2008 with the insufferable, and almost equally inescapable, “I Kissed a Girl,” Perry may be surpassed only by Lady Gaga in terms of vapid pop sensibilities.

These songs are hits, but hardly classics, and the idea of Continue reading »

Live in NYC: Green Day, Katy Perry—Who Will Wear More Eyeliner?

Published July 28th, 2009 by Karen

ABOVE: Green Day sporting Paris Hilton-esque raccoon eyes in live performance of the new single”21 Guns.” The band performs tonight in NYC with Kaiser Chief of “I Predict a Riot” fame.

Tonight, New York music fans have zillions of choices of bands and events to attend, but two of the biggest bills in town are probably Green Day (Madison Square Garden) and Katy Perry (Hammerstein Ballroom).

The two shows actually have more in common than you might expect. Continue reading »

Confused: JetBlue Terminal 5 Music Hall at JFK vs Terminal 5 Music Hall in NYC

Published June 25th, 2009 by Karen

ABOVE: Kanye West’s “American Boy” collaborator Estelle performs at JetBlue Terminal 5/T5 at JFK. We’re pretty sure she knows it’s not Manhattan...

In a statement outlining the details of a new battle of the bands competition, JetBlue Airlines announced that it is offering up-and-coming bands the chance to play at the New York music venue Terminal 5.

While Terminal 5 is the name of a popular music club in NYC (56th St.), the JetBlue Terminal 5/T5 music hall is located in an actual airline terminal, at JFK.

Same city, same name, two different venues. Confusing? Yeah, a little.

The good news is, with the AirTrain and everything, JetBlue’s T5 music hall at JFK is probably almost as easy to get to as the NYC one.

Still, if Katy Perry is suing Katie Perry over naming rights, we can only imagine what’s brewing in NYC.

"I think this whole idea of Katy Perry wanting to sue Katie Perry is stupid. I mean, Katie Perry was obviously well established in the business before..."

Singer Katy Perry’s representatives are attempting to stop an Australian fashion designer from trade-marking her clothing label with the brand name Katie Perry, according to a Reuters report.

The designer, who was born Katie Jane Perry, started her high-end Katie Perry loungewear label two years ago, according to Reuters. She initiated a trademark application in September 2008 and recently opened her first store in Sydney. But she was hit with a cease-and-desist order from reps of the recording artist, in an attempt to halt the “similar name” being used in connection with the clothing label.

The pop star’s label, EMI, sent the clothing designer a letter informing her of their artist’s intention to file for trademark protection in Australia. The artist, whose real name is Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson, is very popular down under; her tune “I Kissed a Girl” peaked at number one, and she snagged best newcomer at the MTV Australia Awards in March

Katy Perry “Hot’n’Cold” Polka: Better Than the Original?

Published May 19th, 2009 by Karen

Above: So much better than the real thing, don’t you think?

Just when you thought “Weird” Al Yankovic had cornered the market on wacky versions of contemporary pop songs, along comes…a Ukrainian  polka band.

This colorful group didn’t write parody lyrics to this song (c’mon, making a Katy Perry song sound sillier would be difficult), but they did rework Perry’s dance-pop hit “Hot’n'Cold” into a classic polka, complete with accordion.

We’re sure this probably started as a joke, but we think it’s actually much, much better than the original. What do you think? Continue reading »

Will Radiohead Save the Grammys, Confuse Katy Perry Fans, or Just Sell More Ads?

Published January 26th, 2009 by Karen

After turning the record industry on its head in 2007 by releasing an album (In Rainbows) online and allowing listeners to pay whatever price they wanted, Brit rock band Radiohead is reportedly planning on doing something even more surprising: performing on the Grammys.

The band got its start firmly planted in the alt-rock grunge of the ‘90s, copping moves from the Pixies, generally riding whichever trend seemed like the next big thing and subsequently finding success with songs such as “Creep”. Even with pop leanings, the quintet had always been a little off-center, but after 1997’s OK Computer, the group rather abruptly severed its accessible alt-rock roots in favor of a far more experimental sound.

So, why would a band that is seemingly struggling whole-heartedly against the mainstream now decide to dive into the shallow talent pool at the Grammys—a self-congratulatory parade of pre-fab popstars celebrating record sales rather than any sort of legitimate artistic achievements? Please Explain Why This is Popular: Lady Gaga Poker Face video

Published January 21st, 2009 by Karen

flickr photo by davidwhitewolf http://www.flickr.com/photos/8143727@N07/3107120133/Can somebody out there please explain to us why Lady Gaga is so popular?

Is it the cheap blonde wig?
The cheesy electronic beats?
The weird spandex outfits?
The dead-eyed Paris Hilton face she makes at the camera when she “sings”?
Seriously—why is this stuff so popular?!!?

We’re pretty sure it isn’t sharp, witty lyrics that make Lady Gaga so hot. In fact, we’re kinda embarrassed that a grown woman wrote this silly junk…

Sample Lyrics:
“He can’t read my poker face/I won’t tell you that I love you/ Kiss or hug you/ Cause I’m bluffin with my muffin.”                                                                                                     Worse than you thought, right? This stuff makes Britney Spears sound like a poet.

Ok, in the interest of science, we’re going to do our best to watch this whole, awful Lady Gaga “Poker Face” video and try to solve this mystery of why people like her so much.

We need your help!
