Review: Kris Allen “Live Like We’re Dying” Lacks Originality

Hey, remember when Tim McGraw released that horribly sappy faux-country song “Live Like You Were Dying” in 2004 and it was insanely popular?

Now, inexplicable Idol champ Kris Allen (remember him?) is set to debut his big post-Idol single titled “Live Like We’re Dying.”

Original, right?

In his defense, it’s not like Allen wrote this song or anything. Nor did McGraw, for that matter.

Indian “Thriller” video and Other Top Michael Jackson Tributes, Parodies

Published July 13th, 2009 by Karen

ABOVE: Too strange for words: an Indian tribute to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” video. (There’s also a version with made-up English subtitles–but it’s not a translation, it’s a parody…of a parody.Yup.)

When Michael Jackson first released his film-like, 14-minute-long,  “Thriller” music video, it was a smash hit.

While MJ has passed on, the dancing zombies will always be with us, thanks to an endless stream of tributes to this iconic 1983 music video.

The latest “Thriller”-style video to grab our attention (and the attention of tons of YouTubers) is for an Indian song.  The wild video is almost too strange to explain, so just check it out above and witness the warped Bollywood zombie weirdness for yourself.

If you can’t get enough “Thriller” tributes, you’ll also want to check out 30 Rock star/former SNL cast member Tracy Morgan’s  “Thriller” parody, “Werewolf Bar Mitzvah,” as well as, the classic reenactment the “Thriller” video performed by inmates in a Philippine prison (video below).

Although they didn’t do the full “Thriller” routine, there were some interesting performances during American Idol’s Michael Jackson Tribute (it’s worth checking out, just to see why the Adam Lambert/Kris Allen fans are still arguing over the performances).

And, if you’re looking for a more serious MJ tribute, there were some moving performances during Michael Jackson’s public memorial.

What’s your favorite MJ tribute or parody?

American Idol Michael Jackson Tribute Videos by Adam Lambert, Kris Allen

Published June 29th, 2009 by Karen

ABOVE: Idol Winner Kris Allen Performs Jackson’s “Remember the Time.

In an effort to pay final tribute to the King of Pop, and make another buck on commercial sales, Fox is airing a special encore presentation/rerun of American Idol Season 8’s Michael Jackson night special. Odds are the snarky comments from the judges will be edited out of this airing of the show.

Idol fans may recall that during the MJ show, blind pianist/former judges’ fave Scott MacIntyre performed an obscure Michael Jackson number called, “Keep the Faith.” He said he picked the song because he wanted to do something artistic, which caused Simon to bluntly point out that, “It is fine being artistic, just not on this show.”

Good point, Simon. This is glorified karaoke, afterall. While the performances were met with mixed reviews by the judges, looking back at this performance special could be an interesting chance for fans to compare the performances of Idol winner Kris Allen and runner-up Adam Lambert.

The fact that Lambert is the runner-up is often overlooked, as his outgoing persona tends to overshadow Allen. However, word has recently surfaced that the two musical friends have expressed interest in recording together. Maybe they’ll make a great duo. American Idol’s tribute to Michael Jackson airs Monday, June 29 check local listings for times.

Before the show: Check out the complete list of all the Michael Jackson songs each of top 13 contestants will sing. There’s a good chance that these songs will become a big part of the upcoming 2009  Idols Live tour dates featuring this season’s top 10 contestants.

Idol’s Allison Iraheta New Record Deal Announced

Published June 11th, 2009 by Wendy

ABOVE: Who is wearing more make-up? Allison Iraheta and Adam Lambert perform the ’70s rocker, “Slow Ride,” for some reason

Allison Iraheta, the 17 year-old high school student who came in fourth on American Idol this season, has scored a record deal with 19 Recordings, the company affiliated with the top-rated reality show, according to an Associated Press report.

Iraheta joins “American Idol” winner Kris Allen and runner-up Adam Lambert on the label, which is run by “Idol” creator Simon Fuller.

Fuller said that Iraheta, who hails from the Los Angeles suburb of Downey, is one of the most talented teenagers he has ever discovered on the show. The daughter of Salvadoran immigrants, Iraheta, for her part, has said she dreamed of being on American Idol since she was nine.

Before their albums are released in the fall, Allen, Lambert and Iraheta will reunite with their castmates on the annual “American Idol” tour, which kicks off July 5 in Portland, Oregon. Iraheta’s album will be released off Jive Records, which is owned by Sony. No recording plans have yet been announced for third place finisher, Danny Gokey.

Adam Lambert Comes Out of the Closet

Published June 10th, 2009 by Wendy

Above: Adam Lambert performs Gary Jules’s version of the already awful Tears for Fears song, “Mad World.” Originality? Nope.

In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert finally confirms that he is gay, according to Reuters report.

“I don’t think it should be a surprise for anyone to hear that I’m gay,” Lambert told the music magazine in excerpts from an interview released Tuesday as it was announced that he had scored a record deal with his debut album due out in fall. “I’m proud of my sexuality,” he said. “I embrace it. It’s just another part of me.”

Nicknamed “Glambert” during this season’s American Idol contest for his penchant for singing in a falsetto voice, and wearing eye-liner and outrageously glamorous outfits, Lambert and his sexuality was something fans and media dwelled upon during this AI season.

When he lost in May’s finale to the more down-to-earth Kris Allen, some fan websites and the media buzzed with speculation that being gay cost Lambert votes from viewers who pick a winner.

The Rolling Stone magazine with the Lambert interview will hit the stands Friday.

American Idol Crowns Kris Allen Champion

In a stunning musical upset, Kris Allen, the down-to-earth country boy from Conway, Arkansas, defeated Adam Lambert, the glam rocker from San Diego, to become the American Idol champion last night.

When host Ryan Seacrest announced that Allen had come out on top, the humble 23 year-old seemed so surprised, he was speechless. But Lambert, who most certainly will still get a record deal out of this, embraced him as the audience cheered. “It feels good, but Adam deserves this,” Allen finally said. “I don’t even know what to feel right now, this is crazy.”

The announcement of the new Idol champion capped a two-hour, star-studded affair that had several musical superstars, including Kiss, Lionel Richie, Cyndi Lauper and Keith Urban, performing duets with the top Idol contestants.

The highlight of the evening, however, had to be when judge Kara DioGuardi ripped off her dress to reveal a bikini in the middle of a singing duel with a former contestant famous for wearing a two-piece aka “Bikini Girl.”

Adam Lambert Wins Idol Judges w/ Awful DioGuardi Song, “No Boundaries” lyrics

Published May 20th, 2009 by Karen

Above: Adam Lambert sings about mountains, hurricanes, dreams, cliches...

Ok, so if you were lucky enough to have missed last night’s episode of American Idol, you didn’t get to see the debut of American Idol judge Kara DioGuardi’s new song, “No Boundaries.”

DioGuardi co-wrote the anthemic number that is being used as the winner’s theme song for this year’s Idol competition. Last night the top two finalists both sang the song, in some sort of final showdown.

However, even more striking that the predictably predictable performances by Kris Allen and Adam Lambert was the actual song itself. It is a nightmare.

“No Boundaries” is filled with clichés and self-help sentiments so trite, they make Miley Cyrus’s teen self-esteem ballad “The Climb” sound deep by comparison (um, that is not a compliment).

Of course, DioGuardi and the rest of the judges couldn’t say enough nice things about the over-the-top song. Self-congratulatory? Yup.

Here’s a taste of DioGuardi’s handiwork via some of the cheesiest lyrics this side of an Aerosmith power-ballad.

If nothing else, DioGuardi’s nauseating ballad shows us exactly what Idol is looking for: bland cliches. Rhyming “pain” with “hurricane”? Fantastic. It sounds like a greeting card, and should wind up in the garbage just as quickly.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is what professional songwriting looks like, enjoy.

“No Boundaries,” co-written by American Idol judge, Kara DioGuardi
 (excerpt)
With every step you climb another mountain
With every breath it’s harder to believe
Make it through the pain
Weather the hurricane
To get to that one thing
Just when you think the road is going nowhere
Just when you almost gave up on your dreams
They take you by the hand
And show you that you can

You can go higher
You can go deeper
There are no boundaries Continue reading »

American Idol Finale Has Judges Cheering

Published May 20th, 2009 by Wendy

Adam Lambert and Kris Allen took to the ring in the finals of American Idol last night, and even the casual observer would have to say that Lambert scored a knockout punch.

Judge Simon Cowell all but crowned Lambert champ after his stunning rendition of “No Boundaries,” a song co-written for the show by judge Kara DioGuardi. Allen failed to reach the higher notes during his version of the song, and the judges tried to prop him up. “You have thoroughly, thoroughly deserved to be standing on this stage tonight,” Cowell told him.

Lambert, 27, also earned kudos for his take on the Sam Cooke classic “A Change Is Gonna Come,” which was selected for him by Idol creator Sam Fuller, as well as his performance of “Mad World,” which he had performed in a previous Idol episode.

Allen, 23, sang “Ain’t No Sunshine,” another song selected by Fuller, to raves by the judges, but fell short again during his rendition of Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On.”

The winner of the competition will be announced tonight.

Danny Gokey, the soulful singer from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was eliminated from American Idol last night, leaving Adam Lambert and Kris Allen to do battle in the grand finale next week, according to an Associated Press report.

The 29 year-old Gokey had never been in the bottom three and had been considered a frontrunner, but his dancing during his Tuesday night performance of Terence Trent D’Arby’s “Dance Little Sister” was called “desperate” by judge Simon Cowell.  On the other hand, Cowell said that Kris Allen’s stripped down performance of Kanye West’s “Heartless” made him a contender for the finale.

Ryan Seacrest said more than 88 million votes were received with 1 million votes separating the top two singers, meaning next week’s Lambert-Allen showdown may be closer than anticipated. “Look, none of us would have predicted this, guys,” Cowell at the end of the show.
