Mariah Carey’s “Memoirs” to Contain Advertisements

As if we weren’t bombarded by enough advertisements already, Island Def Jam has revealed that Mariah Carey’s new album, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, will feature a 34-page booklet about the diva containing articles with titles like “VIP Access to Her Sexy Love Life” and advertisements for Elizabeth Arden and the Bahamas Board of Tourism, among others.

According to a report on RollingStone.com, the integration of advertisements is the latest move by record companies to increase revenues as album sales continue to nosedive. If the experiment succeeds, ad-packed booklets for Rihanna, Kanye West and Bon Jovi might be in the offing.

The booklet, put out by Elle magazine, will also appear in issues of Elle that coincide with the September 15th release of Carey’s album. Plans are also underway to produce a digitized version of the booklet for the digital release.

What’s on the horizon? Nothing less than corporate sponsorship of leading bands.

A very large, very public memorial was held for Michael Jackson July 7, 2009 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, and not surprisingly a large part of the ceremony was devoted to music. A star-studded cast including Jackson’s family, close friends and, for some reason, John Mayer, paid tribute to Jackson with performances of his favorite songs, his classics and a few songs of their own.

Apollo Celebrates Its 75th Anniversary

Harlem, New York’s legendary Apollo Theater will celebrate its 75th Anniversary this year by inducting music impresario Quincy Jones and singer Patti LaBelle into its Hall of Fame, according to an Associated Press report.

The gala ceremony is scheduled to take place on June 8, according to the report, and will be marked by performances from actor/comedian Jamie Foxx, singers Mariah Carey and Anita Baker, and the R&B group O’Jays.

The Apollo also will present its arts and humanitarian award to Bill Cosby and his wife, Camille. Previous recipients have included Denzel Washington and his wife, Pauletta, and Spike Lee and Tonya Lewis Lee. The award is named after Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis.

The Apollo Theater dates back to the mid-1800s, when it was founded as a dance hall and ballroom by former Civil War General Edward Ferrero.

Mariah Carey Getting Married, Again? Run, Nick Cannon, run!

While celebrity watchers were likely disappointed by the super-secret/super-boring secret wedding of Beyonce and Jay-Z, a new superstar is set to take over the bridal spotlight.

Mariah Carey has been spotted sporting a rather hefty diamond ring, which AOL confirms is an engagement ring from boyfriend Nick Cannon.
Carey, 39, and Cannon, 27, have been dating recently, though neither has officially commented on the hot wedding rumor.

Carey, who is riding high on the record-breaking success of her latest album, E=MC2, is also unveiling a new film project, Tennessee. Her return to acting is a questionable move, given that her infamously terrible role in the semi-autobiographical flick Glitter nearly ruined her career.

An actor, MTV personality and rapper, Cannon rose to fame as star of Nickelodeon’s All That and the Nick Cannon Show, and went on to appear in films such as Drumline and Men in Black II. He has been previously linked with singer Christina Milian and Kim Kardashian, and was recently briefly engaged to a Victoria’s Secret model.

Given Carey’s outgoing personality, it seems unlikely that she’ll keep her big day under wraps the way Beyonce did. Stay tuned for more news, photos and wedding day details as the big day approaches.
