Lynyrd Skynyrd Loses Player to Cancer

Published May 8th, 2009 by Karen

Above: Lynyrd Skynyrd’s corny 2003 hit,”Red, White & Blue.”(Redneck, white hair, blue collar).
After the Jump: 1975 Lynyrd Skynyrd “Free Bird” video & lots of Confederate flags, of course.

We don’t always agree with the band’s politics, ahem, but we’re still bummed to report that iconic Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd has lost another member. Bassist Ean Evans passed away at his Mississippi home earlier this week following a battle with cancer. The following was posted on the band’s website:

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of longtime Lynyrd Skynyrd bassist Ean Evans. Ean put up a valiant battle with an aggressive form of cancer and he will be sorely missed by family, friends and fans.”

Evans had been with the band since 2001.

The band’s most recent album of new material, Vicious Cycle, was released in 2003 and yielded a collaboration with Kid Rock, “Gimme Back My Bullets,” as well as the cringe-inducing hit, “Red, White & Blue (Love it or Leave it)” (sample lyrics: “My hair’s turning white/My neck’s always been red/My collar’s still blue”).

The group had planned Continue reading »

Tupac is Alive? See the New Photos and Judge for Yourself.

We don’t normally read this junk, but this headline sort of caught our attention.
(Give us a break, we can’t worry about swine flu all day, can we?)

Anyway, a popular/questionable gossip site has just posted some new photos that it claims will prove that Tupac is still alive.

Maybe he’s hanging out with Elvis. Go check out the photo evidence and judge for yourself.

We’re not 100% convinced by the photos, but it is interesting to know that people still think Tupac is alive and hiding somewhere (apparently, New Orleans?). We didn’t realize there was any doubt that the popular rapper had died after being wounded during a drive-by shooting in 1996.

Do you think Tupac is dead? What about Elvis? Andy Kaufmann?

Courtney Love intends to file a lawsuit within the next month in an effort to recoup the millions of dollars “looted” from her late husband’ Kurt Cobain’s estate, E! reports.

According to E! the suit targets “former assistants, former managers, CPAs, lawyers and a couple of banks” who Love says bilked roughly $30 million in cash and another $500 million in false real estate ventures from Cobain’s fortune.

“Courtney’s main interest is ensuring that her daughter gets the assets back that were stolen,” San Diego attorney Rhonda Holmes told E!. Cobain’s mother and siblings are also listed as plaintiffs in the suit.

Cobain, Nirvana’s lead singer-guitarist, was discovered dead in his Washington home this week 15 years ago.

In a case of too little too late, the plastic surgeon that operated on Kanye West’s mother shortly before she died has had his medical license revoked, according to a report on E! Online.

According to E!, after the California Medical Board successfully brought charges against him over two criminal convictions for driving under the influence, Dr. Jan Adams can no  practice medicine in the state.

Adams, who admitted “the truth of each and every allegation,” can petition for reinstatement in three years. This is the second time in a year the physician has lost his right to practice. Last January, the Medical Board did not immediately renew his license due to his failure to pay child support that he owed his ex.

Before the incident with West’s mom, Adams was a doctor in high demand on the talk-show circuit with regard to discussing plastic surgery options.

"[...] Ok, when we found out about Kurt Cobain’s scheduled appearance in Guitar Hero 5, we were mildly disgusted. The idea that Courtney Love would..."

15 Years Dead: Does Kurt Cobain Still Matter?

Well music fans, today is April 8,  do you know what that means? (Other than that I’m still waiting for my birthday pony to arrive. Ahem.)

It means that Kurt Cobain has been dead for 15 years.
The suicidal Nirvana leader’s body was found at his Seattle mansion Wednesday, April 8, 1994.

However, lately, we’re not sure whether Cobain is remembered more as a musician or a dead junkie. In the years since his death, Cobain has endured all manner of abuse, including:

1. The unstoppable trainwreck that is Courtney Love and her blog.

2. Horrible Kurt Cobain dolls/action figures.

3. A ghoulish and tasteless book, Journals, that features Xeroxed pages of his private journal. (Seriously, when you die do you want people passing around photocopies of your diary?)

4. Being thoroughly upstaged by the surprisingly mainstream Dave Grohl.

5. Countless lawsuits fighting over his money.

6. Various episodes of Law & Order loosely based on his death. Continue reading »

Jazz, Heavy Metal Fans Mourn: Drummer Louis Bellson Dies on Valentine’s Day 2009

Published February 17th, 2009 by Karen

Flickr photo by guyman22 Most drummers would trade their kits for the chance to play with a big band star like Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie, Louis Armstrong or Benny Goodman.

Legendary jazz drummer Louis Bellson spent his career keeping the beat for those greats and countless others. With a career that spanned six decades and over 200 albums, the passing of this 84-year-old star is major loss to the music world.

Bellson reportedly passed away on Valentine’s Day at a Los Angeles hospital due to complications from a broken hip and Parkinson’s Disease.

Heavy metal fans should tip their hats to Bellson as well: As a teenager, Bellson pioneered the double-bass drum kit—a set-up that has since found great popularity among drummers of the heavy metal, hard rock and speed metal genres. Continue reading »

Ronettes Singer Dead at 67. RIP Awesome Beehive Hairdos.

Published February 13th, 2009 by Karen

Flickr photo by dotpolkaIn the 1960s, Ronnie Spector and her singing group, the Ronettes, became the most famous example of controversial producer Phil Spector’s groundbreaking wall-of-sound recording techniques.

The group rose to fame thanks to unforgettable songs such as “The Best Part of Breakin’ Up,” “I Wish I Never Saw the Sunshine” and “Be My Baby.”

Many groups imitated the band’s sound, and Spector’s recording techniques, but none could match the magic of that group.

Spector’s famous wall of sound got a little quieter on February 11, 2009 with the passing of Ronnie’s sister, 67-year-old Ronettes singer Estelle Bennett. Estelle was Continue reading »

The Cramps Lux Interior Dead at 62. RIP, Rock’n'Roll.

Published February 5th, 2009 by Karen

Flickr photo by luisvilla February 3, 2009 marked the 50th anniversary of “the day the music died” when the plane carrying Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens crashed. The February 4, 2009 death of Lux Interior probably won’t make the same big headlines, but for a generation of punk, rock and rockabilly fans the impact is just as great because one of the genre’s best-loved noisemakers has been silenced.

For more than 30 years the Cramps, led by Lux and his wife, guitarist Poison Ivy, shaped the Technicolor punk sounds that are sometimes tagged psychobilly or horror rock because of the group’s affinity for b-movie references and retro-trash. Interior’s wild style was as much Elvis as Iggy Pop, Eddie Cochran and Eddie Munster.

The Cramps were among the early bands tear up the stage at CBGBs in New York in the ‘70s (and an infamous gig at a Napa State Hospital, a mental institution, here), paving the way for a future generation of bands like Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and the White Stripes to peddle their ramshackle garage rock sounds.

Reports indicate that 62-year-old Interior (born Erick Lee Purkhiser) passed away due to a heart condition. In 1987 false reports spread that the singer had died of a heroin overdose. Unfortunately, the news is certain this time, although the cause of death appears to be natural.

Mainstream success was largely unknown to this wild bunch, although songs like “Bikini Girls with Machine Guns” did find some success on MTV. If you’re not familiar with this legendary band’s music, then please go check out some of their songs and videos now. If you’re a rock’n’roll fan, you’ll be glad you did. More Lux Interior obit info here and here, too.

Rock is still Dead: 50th Anniversary of Buddy Holly’s Death

Published February 2nd, 2009 by Karen

Flickr photo by gtmcknight Today is the 50th anniversary of what has rightfully become known as, “the day the music died.” It was five decades ago that the plane carrying Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens crashed in Iowa breaking the hearts of countless teenagers and changing the course of rock’n’roll history forever.

Do the boys, and everyone else, a favor: please don’t play Don McClean’s “American Pie” on a jukebox or a karaoke bar ever again. Sure, it makes reference to the day the music died, but it is also one of the longest, most lamest, most soul-crushingly boring songs ever written. And Madonna recorded a cover of it. Enough said.

If you want to pay tribute to these fallen stars, turn up “Three Stars” by ‘50s rockabilly guitarist/friend of Holly, Eddie Cochran. Recorded shortly after the crash, Cochran was reportedly too shaken by the tragedy to allow the song to be released. Unfortunately, Cochran died shortly thereafter at age 21 in 1960, so the song is now available. Listening as Cochran’s voice shakes and he fights back tears, it is clear that this might be the saddest song ever recorded.

Motown Legend Dies on Christmas Plus Download Free Motown Music

Published January 7th, 2009 by Karen

News of Stooges guitarist Ron Asheton’s death is still making waves among rock fans around the world, but music fans are in for more bad news today as belated reports are surfacing regarding the death of a Motown legend.

Robert Ward passed away December 25 at age 70, according to a report posted earlier today by Billboard. While the name may not immediately ring a bell, the music this guitarist helped create will be remembered for years to come.

A founding member of the Ohio Players, Ward was behind well-known songs such as “Fire” and “Love Rollercoaster,” the latter a funk hit that found renewed success thanks to a popular version recorded by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Ward’s colorful, vibrato-drenched guitar tone was an instantly recognizable part of most of the songs he played on. Continue reading »
