Worst album cover ever?

Although Weezer’s new album doesn’t hit stores until November 3, fans are already clamoring over the song previews posted online–although we’re sort of surprised that the horrendous album art and cringe-worthy title haven’t scared people away.

If you’re so impatient that you absolutely need to hear Continue reading »

REVIEW: New Alice in Chains Black Gives Way to Blue Sounds Too Familiar

Alice in Chains, Weekend at Bernie's

After singer Layne Staley died of a drug overdose in 2002, it looked like things might be over for gloomy grunge kings Alice in Chains.

On Black Gives Way to Blue, Alice in Chains’ first new studio effort since Staley’s death, the band is back with a new singer and the same old sound—which might be exactly what fans wanted.

Replacing singers with soundalikes almost never works—AC/DC and Journey (shudder) may be the rare exceptions to this rule. Alice in Chains seems determined to join that club—and it just might work.

Alice in Chains fans are likely well aware the much of the band’s music was and is Continue reading »

R. Kelly has said he is planning to complete work on a series of collaborations he started work on with Michael Jackson just prior to the King of Pop’s death on June 25, according to a report on NME.com

The R&B singer told the AOL Web site Black Voices that he had worked on five songs with Jackson, and was adamant that they would be released publically.  We’re going to get it out,” Kelly said of the songs, which were recorded in his home studio. “Michael liked the way I would try to sing the songs just like him. I recorded five joints for [Jackson].”

Several singers are thought to have collaborated with Jackson right before his death, including Akon and Ne-Yo as well with R. Kelly.  Although he has been in the news more for his personal troubles than his music, a new album from R Kelly is due out shortly.

Carrie Underwood has rushed the first single off her latest album to YouTube, a day after an unfinished version of the tune, “Cowboy Casanova” leaked online, according to a Reuters report.

The track comes from the country singer’s third album Play On, which will be released by Arista Nashville November 3, a week before the singer co-hosts the Country Music Association Awards with Brad Paisley.

Underwood co-wrote “Cowboy Casanova” with Brett James, who penned her 2006 hit “Jesus, Take the Wheel,” and Mike Elizondo, who is best known for his work with hip-hop artists Eminem, Jay-Z and Dr. Dre.  Underwood also worked with some other unexpected collaborators on the album, including R&B heavyweight Ne-Yo and pop hitmakers Max Martin and Kara DioGuardi.

Underwood’s 2007 album Carnival Ride sold nearly 3 million copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan, while her 2005 debut album sold over twice that amount at almost 7 million copies.

New Muse Album, The Resistance: Free! Plus, 2009 Muse Tour Dates

Pearl Jam recently arranged an online scavenger hunt in which fans collected pieces of album cover artwork and redeemed them for a free Pearl Jam song.

UK rockers Muse took a more extreme approach by orchestrating a real-world scavenger hunt populated with rogue agents, resistance and decoys providing clues related to the band’s new album, The Resistance. (There was also some complicated storyline about revolutions or something…but that’s not really the point…)

Our point is that, scavenger hunts aside, Muse is now revealing its latest project to the world by allowing fans to preview The Resistance for free online.

However, for fans who actually want to buy The Resistance, the price is fairly high.

On the band’s website, U.S. fans can order several different version of the album, starting at $18.98 (+s&h) for the basic CD, and going all the way to $99.99 (+s&h) for the deluxe edition featuring:

  • CD + DVD in foldout softpak
  • The Making Of The Resistance DVD
  • 180g double heavyweight vinyl
  • Muse USB pre-loaded with WAV, Apple Lossless and MP3 320 files plus bespoke audio player
  • 12″ Art Print
  • Exclusive 5.1 surround sound Audio DVD.
  • Hmm…$99.99 seems like a lot of dough for 4 different version of the same album, don’t you think?
And, let’s face it, you’re probably just going to throw it on your iPod anyway–so why not just get the cheap-o digital download version?

So, what do Muse fans think of the group’s latest effort?
Preview the Resistance and tell us what you think!

The Red Hot Chili Peppers are planning on spicing things up a bit this fall by going into the studio to record some new songs, according to a report on RollingStone.com

“We imposed a two-year hiatus, which we felt we needed, then we went back to the roundtable and the decision was, ‘Let’s do this,” bassist Flea explained. “After being kind of burnt at the end of our last tour, I feel major enthusiasm and vigor,” he said.

There’s no word yet on when a new Peppers album will come out, according to RollingStone. When it’s issued, it will be the first release for the group since 2006’s double-platinum Stadium Arcadium. According to the report, chances are Rick Rubin will reprise his role as producer on any new album.

Not that the members of the Peppers haven’t been keeping busy. Since their last outing, Chad Smith joined the all-star group Chickenfoot, frontman Anthony Kiedis developed a series for HBO and Flea enrolled at USC to study music theory.

Barbra Streisand, who seldom performs concerts, is scheduled to put on a show at the small New York jazz club where she opened for Miles Davis 48 years ago, according to a Reuters report.

The ultimate diva will play a solo date at the 123-capacity Village Vanguard on September 26, three days before the release of her new album “Love Is the Answer,” a collection of jazz standards.

Tickets will be given away to fans who either purchase the CD in advance or fill out an entry form.

Streisand last toured in 2006, when her shows grossed more than $92 million, according to Billboard Boxscore, setting house gross records in 14 of the 16 arenas it played.

Complete details about the concert and tickets are available at barbrastreisand.com.

Mariah Carey’s “Memoirs” to Contain Advertisements

Published August 4th, 2009 by Karen

ABOVE: Mariah Carey performs on American Idol.

As if we weren’t bombarded by enough advertisements already, Island Def Jam has revealed that Mariah Carey’s new album, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, will feature a 34-page booklet about the diva containing articles with titles like “VIP Access to Her Sexy Love Life” and advertisements for Elizabeth Arden and the Bahamas Board of Tourism, among others.

According to a report on RollingStone.com, the integration of advertisements is the latest move by record companies to increase revenues as album sales continue to nosedive. If the experiment succeeds, ad-packed booklets for Rihanna, Kanye West and Bon Jovi might be in the offing.

The booklet, put out by Elle magazine, will also appear in issues of Elle that coincide with the September 15th release of Carey’s album. Plans are also underway to produce a digitized version of the booklet for the digital release.

What’s on the horizon? Nothing less than corporate sponsorship of leading bands.
