New Pearl Jam Album May Be First #1 in 13 Years

Pearl Jam is on track to score their first number one album on the charts in thirteen years, according to a report on Billboard.com.

According to Billboard, music industry prognosticators are predicting that the album, Backspacer, which was released Sunday, could shift anywhere between 175,000 to 200,000 copies by week’s end. That sales figure should easily move it ahead of the competition when the Billboard 200 chart for the period ending September 27 is published next Wednesday.

The new album — Pearl Jam’s first not with a major label — is sold exclusively in the United States through Target, iTunes, Pearl Jam’s Web site and independent retailers.

The Seattle-based grunge band has had a spate of number two albums on the charts, including their last release, 2006’s self-titled set. Their last number one album was No Code, released in 1996.

The release of Guitar Hero 5 was met with negative reactions from many music fans due to its inclusion of Kurt Cobain as a playable character capable not only of singing  Nirvana songs, but of dancing and lips-synching to hits by everyone from Bon Jovi to Bush. (See video below).

So what do Cobain’s widow and his Nirvana bandmates think about it? Continue reading »

New: Them Crooked Vultures–Best Supergroup Ever?

Published August 13th, 2009 by Karen

ABOVE: A quick sneak preview of a new Them Crooked Vultures track, “Nobody Loves Me and Neither Do I.”

Until recently, supergroups seemed like a relic of the ’70s (Hi, Cream). However,  it seems that the phenomenon is coming back in fashion as groups like 7 Worlds Collide (featuring members of Radiohead, the Smiths and Wilco) and the Monsters of Folk start to take shape.

Them Crooked Vultures is making a play for the title of top supergroup, and with a line-up boasting members of Led Zeppelin, Nirvana and Queens of the Stone Age, the new power trio just might be top dog, er, vulture.

It’s not too surprising that the latest hard-rock supergroup would feature Queens of the Stone Age leader Josh Homme, his knack for putting together an all-star band is well-documented. Similary, Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl scored the Germs’ guitarist, Pat Smear, as a bandmate early on (and we already know all about his other band, Nirvana). The third vulture is some guy named John Paul Jones? Apparently, he played bass in some old timey band– Led Zeppelin, or something like that. Ahem.

The superstar band made its live debut in Chicago over the weekend, but we’ll have to wait a little longer to find out how the new CD turns out.

Of course, the group already has a website, and while there isn’t much music available on it, there is merchandise for sale: Namely, a $30 t-shirt.

Rock’n'roll.

Smells Like Teen Spirit: Rick Astley, Nirvana Remix—Love it or Hate It?

Published July 20th, 2009 by Karen

ABOVE: Pop and grunge unite in one of the strangest mash-ups in recent memory. Love it? Hate it? Hope you never hear it again? Hear more of DJ Morgoth’s strange mash-ups, below.

Blame Germany for this latest musical horror, as DJ Morgoth got the warped idea to mash together Rick Astley’s cheeseball 1987 dance hit, “Never Gonna Give You Up,” with Nirvana’s 1991 grunge smash, “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”

The combination actually works surprisingly well, and it just might get stuck in your head, whether you like it or not.

Thankfully, this video hasn’t turned into another “rickrolling” plague like the one that invaded the web a while back…but it might.

Among Morgoth’s other twisted musical concoctions are a mix of the Prodigy’s “Firestarter” and Judas Priest’s “You Got Another Thing Coming”, and a cheerful reworking of Motorhead’s “Ace of Spades” mixed up with the Gorillaz.
